Yes, I'm the guy with the thick german accent giving orders basically non-stop.
The general interest varies a lot, especially with past successes. Usually there are around 25-30 outfits that sign up with a squad but after a loss it's slightly less and after a win it's more. For last Saturdays match we had ~20 outfits sign up and it was pretty hard getting support for it because the two harsh losses - we basically got warpgated by Cobalt - demotivated people. For the merger smash we had a meeting on Sunday and we had 41 outfits sign up and, apart from 2 of them which could only field half a squad, all with at least one squad. It's a high profile match and I think the success in the last server smash contributed to people being more motivated, so it's not surprising to get such a high amount of outfits. We're trying to get Woodman to field 480 players so more than just half of our outfits can participate, but since they lost all their matches they'll probably have trouble fielding even 240. After the merges, it will probably be pretty hard to get a spot since server smashes will always be around 240 players since that is a good number that keeps the fights organized while maintaining the large scale. Miller does make a random rotation, so chances are that you can get a spot if you are in an outfit that wants to participate. For a lone player there are usually only 12 slots in one public squad, so the chance to get in that way is pretty low.
I'm kinda happy that I chose a strategy for the last match where it looked like they were winning at the start even though they followed my plan to the letter and lost because of it. I see a lot of "We did great in the first hour" posts on their subreddit, so it at least keeps them more motivated to send more people for the next match rather than demotivating them completely.
The best plans make the enemy believe they are doing the right thing while they are in fact playing right in your hand
About ther MergerSmash; I like the idea of just mixing outfits of both servers incase Woodman can't rally enough people and just have a massive fight, since many seem to agree that a new name should be chosen anyways. That would be a nice way of preventing any hard feelings and a good start for us as we'll all be together from then on. This is meant to be fun after all, and a healthy server community contributes a lot to that.

It is SOE's decision to decide the name through the smash and basically the servers don't really get a say in this. Unless the result becomes questionable (see Mattherson-Waterson) or it becomes a draw, a neutral name is unlikely to happen.
For those interested, I made a 2 minute excerpt of my view (I recorded everything and will release it in full after the merge):
Left is my "Command Desk", which is basically GIMP, an open source graphics editor, with the background image of Hossin and 7 layers, 1 for each platoon, which I moved around whenever I gave an order to a platoon - unless I forgot and had to ask "Where is platoon X atm?" 5 minutes later. Right side is obviously the game and I was staring at the map for the whole duration.
I have 2 monitors and they were really, really necessary for this. It allowed me to look at where which platoon is while still keeping an eye on the base populations.
You can also hear the infiltration squad chatter since I was in the same channel, though I mostly tuned out their chatter.

It depends. Organized PS2 on the level of server smash doesn't exist outside of those events. However, there are quite a few outfits that play very well organized, but since you are from the US, I can't really recommend any because I don't really know anything about the US outfit scene.

Nah, not that, luckily.
He is using 4-squad platoons during the match, even though we reminded him that Hossin has a lot more connections, which requires a lot more flexibility. While I think that Force Commanders should play the way they feel comfortable, I'm still happy that others convinced him to at least split up one platoon into two 2-squad platoons, so at least some flexibility is given.
If we should lose air control, he plans to use AA to regain it, which in a ServerSmash doesn't work. It just means that you have less people fighting while their air is still full strength somewhere else. Luckily Woodman air is terrible, so this most likely won't be a factor.
The platoons are supposed to decide their movements themselves with only minimum overarching guidance. He basically just wants to "make big strategic decisions", which works fine on live but you have to be a lot more involved in a ServerSmash. While platoon internals can be left to platoon leaders, the platoon movements have to be made top-down to make sure that you make the most out of the manpower in regards to your strategic goal.
Basically, he does everything very differently from everything Miller learned out of discussions over the last matches. His outfit never participated in such a match, so it's easy to see why he might think that it's just like live. I'm still hoping that I'm wrong and his way isn't as bad as I think it is, because if I'm right, Woodman stands a really good shot at winning the match.

why is a guy whos outfit never participated forcecommander in such an importand match in the first place?
I was thinking the same thing, also giving a complete control without any major participation from the other outfits(well they contribute but he doesn't have to listen) seems lackluster. It may work but the blame is on one guy's shoulder in the end.
