Fucking VDRS red platoons are hilarious though. We gal dropped 12 heavies and 12 medics onto a group of about 2 dozen tanks and came out victorious.
The cost of that is if you don't jump exactly when they tell you to jump, you'll pretty much be blacklisted from every red platoon in the outfit.
I *always* jump when they say to jump. Usually they just say "Don't jump until we get to the squad way-point" and then I just hit "E" when we fly over it on the mini-map.

Excellent!
So what kind of role are you preferring right now for either account? Tank driver, pilot, infiltator, what do you gel with the most?

Originally, I thought I would have the most fun being an infiltrator, but I actually prefer either doing engineer or heavy assault. On Mattherson, I saved up enough cert points to buy a mini chain-gun for heavy assault and also have an anti-air rocket launcher, so I've been playing almost exclusively heavy assault for the last week or so. The mini chain-gun rocks by the way. I can actually kill people now.
I don't really know which guns are good though. I want to just ask "Hey, which guns are good?" but I'm afraid I'll get an answer like "It depends..."
JUST TELL ME THE BEST GUNS
Anyhow, I'll probably end up doing heavy assault/engi on my vanu account too, but I'm just doing exclusively engineer on vanu so I can repair things and put down mana AP turrets in gay spots.
I can't say much about infantry weapons. I'm almost always an engineer with the basic assault rifle. However if you want to make friends and gain certs, get a homing rocket launcher for your heavy, and get a second burster for your max. Burster maxes cut through aircraft like a hot knife through delicious cheese.
Tanks are awesome. Learn how to magrider so we can be tank buddies. Also look into getting a Saron. I'm getting a Saron with my next 1k. It's a shitload of certs, but if you follow a platoon or even wherever the continent's pub zerg is, your gunners will make that 1k back for you in no time. It's point-shoot-kill with huge damage against armor, so easy even a TR could do it
But magriders are expensive as fuck, so if you're loving the vehicle game, try certing in a flash or sundie as your backup vehicle.

I tried driving a magrider yesterday, and it wasn't easy. My next 1,000 for TR is going to go to some anti-tank weapon because as awesome as the mini chain-gun is, it does nothing to vehicles.
I don't know what to get for my Vanu char. Probably some kind of rifle that both my engi and heavy assault can both use, but I dunno. I just... dunno. There is so much stuff!

Well ya... but I mean like machine guns. There are all these SMGs, LMGs, and so on, and I don't even know the difference! Then, there are all the side arms, with all kinds of pistols and such. And if I want to go infiltrator, which sniper rifle do I pick!?

I know nothing about guns. But I do know you can run them all over with anything bigger than a Flash!
If you're picking up infantry, the starting guns are very well balanced. Use them for a while and find what you like and don't. If you feel like your enemies die decently fast but you can't hit them from over 25m, then you know what kind of gun you want to buy for that class.
UGH WHY DO PLATOON LEADERS ALWAYS TRY TO MAKE US ATTACK BIO LABS WHERE WE'RE OUTPOPPED!?
It's fucking suicidal and there is absolutely no point in participating in those attacks because it's like slamming your head against a brick wall and going "Hey, the wall didn't break, I'd better try again" and you keep doing that until your skull splits open and your brain falls out onto the ground and says "Fuck this, I'm out."

Those leaders are more interested in cert farming than territory gain. I love sieging bio labs, I just pick off the tanks one at a time as they come out of the gate.

Yeah, but they always do it on the alerts and constantly yelling at people to push forward, even though the jump pads lead directly to death. Not that I'm afraid to sacrifice my body for the Terran Republic, just I don't wanna do it like 20+ times. I very much prefer when the enemy commits to ridiculous attacks and I can farm them for their delicious cert points.
Some of you, i'm sure, have flown or gunned in libs. THIS is the main reason i love to Liberator gun, it's so rewarding to shoot a 150mm shell and blow up a Reaver, Scythe, or Mossie.

If they stopped us the first 17 times, they'll never imagine us trying to do it an 18th time!

Ya being on the receiving end is annoying, but I do respect the others that do pop my ESF. Shooting an ESF at range is hard and takes a lot of practice.

JUST TELL ME THE BEST GUNS
Anyhow, I'll probably end up doing heavy assault/engi on my vanu account too, but I'm just doing exclusively engineer on vanu so I can repair things and put down mana AP turrets in gay spots.
I can help with weaponry questions, my main expertise is NC weaponry (a la, I've tried most of them) but I know enough about all the factions to help (finally a use for all this worthless knowledge, lol).
First on sniping:
All the empires sniper rifles are almost exactly the same except for one unique one for each empire. The only difference I think, is that the vanu semi-auto snipers have no bullet drop, but a slower bullet and they fall-off to lower damage at extreme range. Most people aren't really big fans of the semi-auto snipers overall though.
The bolt-snipers (what most people think of as the true snipers) come in sort of different tiers, ranging from slower bullet, lower body damage and shorter 1hk headshot but faster bolt/fire rate and faster reload TO faster bullet, higher body damage, longer 1hk headshot but slower bolt recharge and fire rate and slower reload. These are all identical between empires, just different names.
Tier 1: SAS-R/TSAR-42/Ghost
These have the slowest bullet, meaning you have to lead by more at long ranges and they have more drop, and they use normal gun scopes (up to 4x) rather than sniper scopes. The normal gun scopes are easier to use at close range cause they don't sway or overzoom, but it's quite difficult to hit really accurate shots far away.
Their body shot damage is higher than normal at close range but falls off the fastest, though it's still a 2 shot kill at almost any range you can accurately shoot. Same for headshots, it's still 1hk at any range you can reasonably headshot with the low zoom scope. Their other big bonus is they have the fastest fire rate and lowest downtime both between shots and for reloading. Based on all of this, use this for close to medium range sniping, if you wanna be like a twitchy sniper up close these are the ones to pick.
Price is average, not too high (250 certs I think).
Tier 2: NC14 Bolt Driver/M77-B/XM98
These are your all-around balanced snipers, definitely a recommended weapon to have. Their velocity is a step up, and they (and all the higher tiers) use the sniper scopes, ranging from 6x-12x, but you can't go lower than 6x. They are also the cheapest (NC's is default, the others are 100 certs). They are in their prime outside the really close range where you can benefit and not be harmed by the extra zoom and their pretty fast shots are a good bonus but not at the most extreme range. They suffer a bit there--you can see very far away with a 12x scope on these, but you really have to compensate for drop and leading, and the very furthest people will not be 1 hit headshots. With a lot of practice you can be basically as good as a Tier 4 sniper at long range while firing shots faster, but it's definitely more difficult. I usually don't find it worthwhile to go higher than 10x zoom with these (usually use 6/7/8).
Tier 3: LA80/SR-7/V10
These are sort of a compromise, they are very similar to the Tier 2's, but with slightly slower fire rate but slightly higher velocity and slightly longer 1hk headshot range (long range performance). Price is max, 1000 certs or 700 SC. I don't recommend these, they are not different enough from the T2's to be worth the price difference--that steep price for a compromise is just dumb, and if you want the real long range performance, get the Tier 4.
Tier 4: EM-4 Longshot/RAMS .50/Parallax
These guys have lightning fast bullets and 1hk headshot as far as you can see, which means only a little bit of leading even pretty far out, and only a very small drop compensation. If you really want to be the methodical sniper, these are your choice by far and they are the easiest to shoot and learn with (least drop and leading calculations, which takes some practice). Even if you are closer in, but don't really care about the slower fire rate and reload time, these are a good choice cause they shoot lasers and have the highest body shot damage (though slight and only really matters if other damage factors in). Reloading takes an eternity though, so make sure you are safe. Good with all scopes from 6-12x. Price is max again, but worth it if you want to snipe and either want max range performance or want one that's easier to do well with. Look for it on SC sale for 350.
Next there's semi-auto snipers:
With these, you don't have to unscope after every shot to pull the bolt, and they carry 10 round magazines instead of 5. The tradeoff though is they take 2 headshots to kill and 3 body shots (or 4 for extreme range vanu) instead of 1 and 2. The two choices for each empire are almost the same, just different recoil patterns and one of them uses the long range scopes and one uses the normal gun scopes. I have used these for a while but don't really like them anymore. At long range, their method is spamming body shots, but the recoil makes it a bit annoying and it's just not as deadly as the bolts, and they are still quite difficult to use at close range because the high recoil. They are a compromise. The long range ones are default for vanu/TR and 100 for NC, and the short range ones are 250 certs.
If you want to be the close range auto sniper, what you really want are the semi-auto scout rifles though:
There's one for your empire (identical across all of them): Shadow/HSR-1/Nyx that's more reasonably priced, and one expensive one from the NS (all factions), the Vandal.
These have fast firing single shots with manageable recoil, and slightly lower damage but they still pack a big punch and can be pretty reliable even while moving. If you can get it, the Vandal is pretty superior because you move at 75% of your normal speed while scoped in rather than 50% like most weapons, and it has a larger clip (but longer reload). It really lets you be the mobile bam bam bam headshot/accurate shot spammer. The other ones are fun too but just less mobile.
And just one majorly important tip for sniping: On all scopes 6x and above and on the HS/NV scope, hold your sprint key to hold your breath for a short time to eliminate the sway (this is crucial at long ranges).
Anyway I can post another one on other class weapons if it would be helpful and you give me a class and faction (unlike sniping, the factions have more significant differences on other classes).

Those people are my arch enemies in the sky. Probably died more times to Libs than ESFs; the dedicated bomber crews have gotten really good since the game launched.
And then there was that one time some NC group pulled like seven galaxies to use as rams. That was fun.
