Plenty of people are playing this game still. I think the biggest downsides I can think of now is that I can't play as a female or wear tophats. Also, performance can be a bit of an issue in big fights.

I still play, but I'm not in the TL outfit. It's not really pay to win. Paying lets you unlock things twice as fast and it lets you get access to new guns without investing a huge amount of play time, but there isn't anything mechanical that you can't get by playing the game. The only thing that comes close is camo, which is pay only. I'd say they're true to the idea of free to play, without making memberships a waste of money. Biggest downside is, at least IMO, the game's poor programming. Too much work is done CPU-side so you need out of game tweaks to make it run smoothly. Shadows are CPU so even with a top of the line graphics card I'm at medium shadows and ultra everything else. There's also line of sight issues where it's possible to be hit by people who don't render to you when you're in a vehicle, and the game uses hit detection client side so you can't touch people outside your render distance. Also the new lattice system's made for some really laggy battles on Indar.

To reiterate; I used to play a shitton of TF2 and I would just load it up, load server - shoot a few rounds to pass the time and then quit. Can I do similar with Planetside? Meaning it doesn't demand a full hour commitment like Dota 2?

I don't think there even is another way to play this game ^^

Once you figure out how the game works it's very fun, and you always experience something different. Hit me up in PS2 if you have any questions about the game. My character name is Rahsun.

I'm joining Vanu My Character name is TorteDeLini What do I have to do to fix this :B There are some tweaks to fix most common performance problems but at times there are several hundred people in a small area, which kills performance no matter what. When you press Alt-F you can see what you are limited by (CPU or GPU). If it's CPU, you can try setting the render distance to ~1000 and shadows to off. If it's GPU, you can try stuff like setting the textures lower and such. However, the game has come a long way so most people play quite smooth now but some unlucky people with decent PCs are for some reason still having performance issues. The recent addition of lattice is however putting a big strain on PCs again since it focusses battles into huge meatgrinders with lots of people, bullets, explosions and all that which can be a big drain on performance. For the other stuff: It is definitely not pay2win. With all the default equipment you are still competitive. Some weapons might be better for your playstyle or certain situations and at times there are weapons that are OP which then get nerfed later, so buying weapons early doesn't really give you an advantage. You can also unlock all weapons with certs (ingame "currency"). As for XP boosts, the cheap upgrades get you most of the way and the further upgrades have diminishing returns, e.g. 1 cert (=250 XP = ~2.5 kills) in nanoweave gets you 10% more health. The last level costs 1000 certs and only gets you a total of 25% bonus health. That means that even with a boost, you don't really get stronger much faster. You can unlock some stuff with certs which gives you more options, for example C4, tank mines, proximity mines, etc., but you can usually manage without it. It's just more options, not more power. As for logging in, shooting and logging off, that is certainly possible and fun. However, depending on what kind of person you are, it will be just a fraction of the fun you can have with a good outfit and organized ops. For me PS2 is more like SC2 from a different perspective, a strategy game on a huge scale. I'm bad at shooting and i usually find that boring but i have a lot of fun doing organized stuff where we play for a bigger goal, e.g. capturing a continent. While it's true that there are no win conditions apart from the occasional alerts which i usually find more distracting than helpful, it's a sandbox and as such you can make your own goals, the game doesn't force them on you and everything is open to you. Want to just shoot and not think much? No problem, PS2 has instant action and such that instantly get you to places where you can shoot stuff (well, sometimes it lands you in the middle of nowhere but they are working on it). Want to fly around and dogfight other pilots? No problem, just grab your aircraft at any aircraft terminal and start shooting things. Want to just fool around with a few friends? No problem, just grab a Harasser, Liberator or a few lightnings and start blowing up things together. Like small scale, highly organized stuff? No problem, you can find a good squad and do it. Like big scale strategy? No problem, just get into a good platoon or outfit and take part in ops spanning hours fighting against other platoons trying to do the same. You are bad at shooting? No problem, get a squad, play medic and just follow the others, let them do the shooting and revive them when the opponent returned fire or become a squad or platoon leader and tell other people to do the shooting for you while you sit safely in your vehicle. PS2 just has something for everyone. However, my opinions about the new addition of lattice are well known on my server and on reddit so to make it short: I think it's a bad addition and destroys a big part of the game for those people that like large scale strategy and it might make me stop playing. A lot of people are happy about it though, so YMMV. I spent about a thousand hours on PS2 and it's just a great game and i know a lot of people that haven't spent money and still say the same, so i can really recommend it.

I'm joining Vanu My Character name is TorteDeLini Mattherson and Watterson are the two big servers it seems. Sir scoots plays on Watterson as NC, and I think at one point some of the TL staff were playing Vanu there as well, though I don't know if any of them still play. This thread's TL pub guild was on Mattherson playing Terran republic. My main is Mattherson Vanu with the NNG outfit and I know a few other people from the outfit post here, though I don't know what their usernames are. I'd be happy to play with you, but I only play this game a couple times a week nowadays. Unpark your CPU cores is the single biggest thing you can do to help Other than that, there are a lot of useroptions.ini settings you can tweak, but thats more in depth. See how it runs for you first

Meaning it doesn't demand a full hour commitment like Dota 2? Planetside is very teamwork oriented, so running around by your self really doesn't cut it. The real fun in the game comes from getting on teamspeak with a group that you play with regularly and fighting over territory with the other factions. That said, at least in the outfit I run with, things are totally drop in, drop out. I can hop on any time, instantly join up with my friends and do what they are doing, then drop out when I want. That said, I do think its the kind of game where you probably want to play for a couple hours at a time just due to the flow of combat and the rate of character progression... But its the kind of game where you can go afk or alt tab out at will without it really being a problem for your allies because its an open world game. If you disconnect from being afk too long, it only takes a few seconds to get back in and get back to where your outfit is fighting.

A K/D of 1 means you are actually doing incredibly well. You will die a lot to friendly fire, friendly vehicles and friendly grenades, sometimes even your own. It's part of the charm of the game, it's more unforgiving than playing Broodwar against Flash. Every mistake no matter how small gets you killed. Don't worry about dying, it's just the way of life in PS2. Spawn, die, spawn, die, spawn, kill, die, spawn, die, ... Just ignore K/D, play for fun and do what you like, dying is not bad, you don't lose anything but a small amount of time and with practice you can increase the time you spend alive until the inevitable friendly grenade blows you up. On my NC character i hovered around 0.75 K/D, on my newer VS i'm around 1.0. All the videos of killstreaks you will see on youtube and twitch skip over on the equal amount of death streaks. Sometimes people get lucky but it balances out over time. The fullscreen windowed mode is a bug still in the game. It's annoying and i hope it gets fixed some time soon but you can get used to it and they will fix it eventually, there just is other stuff that is more important. Figuring out who is friend and foe is a matter of practice, at the start you can look for colors but over time you have to learn to recognize shapes instead which is more reliable and faster, though harder to learn. You can zoom the minimap if it's too small, though personally i always have it on default and don't really have a problem seeing stuff on it.
