Also, smithing gear early on in the game gives you an edge offensive/defensive wise. Try using a shield to reduce damage of incoming attacks and use spells from your main hand while he staggers. If you have PC version, simply assigne numbers to favorites to change quickly between shield and spells for dual cast. Yeah, Uthger's nice too. I suggested Lydia on account of her being a pretty cool tank. As an early game mage that's what you need. You need someone to take that bear off your back.

Hmm I spent about 3 -4 hours on mage's college, war and companions ( didnt do thieves guild yet ) which is not too bad but I agree it should've been longer.

I personally feel like the side quest lines from the major groups simply give side perks like hideouts, hirelings, special vendors and such.
I must say I liked the mehrunes razor quest (easy access to deadric hearts for smithing and various quests) and the gauldur amulet is a nice necklace with 30 health, stamina and magicka.
I mostly see the radiant random quests as a mean of increasing your money as you explore and clear caves and dungeons and loot random worthy stuff.

Hey guys, I've got a question =) Who is this?
![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/HX8BL.jpg)
She looks pretty neat. Marcurio is a great companion but he looks pretty bland. Wish I could get her to accompany me instead I've tried to make a female character like the one in the picture but sadly I don't even come close. Help? =)

Alternatively, you could just enchant some gear to have 100% destruction reduction cost, so you have unlimited destruction spells. And with the dual casting stagger perk, you should never ever lose a 1v1 against anything. Even without destruction reduction enchants, if you time your staggers and have a large enough mana pool + mana regen (as from the mage quests), you shouldn't need potions for any 1v1 fight.
On a side note, freaking bears man (and sabre tooth cats). I'm playing a thief on master w/o companions, no smith/alch/enchant, and I can usually deal decently well with most things... except for freaking bears. The second I see a bear, I run for the nearest cliff, hide and make a huge detour. (lvl 20 w/ elven gear) Those god damn bears...

It's the same for me... bears, even levelled skeevers (lol) give me problems. I am stuck at the moment trying to fight this fire wizard. She two shots me with fireballs (they have such a huge splash and cannot be avoided), And it takes me about 20 arrows to kill her. She also strafes a lot, heals and has amazing perception.

Its true, bears own thieves/rogues/assasin characters, because they appearently have the sickest fucking stealth detection in the game, they smell you from miles on end and come and maul you in the face in 2 hits.
My best solution for mages was to res pot up, force the opponent mage to come near(by using line of sight) or sneak attack them.
or if your conjuration is high enough, summon something to tank (or even kill) the mages for you.

I highly recommend you don't level up conjuration too much. It's so broken. Summons can easily kill the final boss on their own while you just stand there.

Mana free destruction spells kills any excitement from the game as fast as summon daedra lord or multicyclecrafted gear. Anyone telling me mana regeneration is useless clearly either isn't playing a mage or has smithed their gear up to the skies. There's a massive difference between having 2-3 regeneration items in combat vs not having them once you fight something that doesn't die in a single dualcast.
Or perhaps those people who claim mana regen in combat doesn't work haven't noticed that yes you indeed do not regen mana while your hands are "charged" with a spell, as in waiting for you to release the buttons to fire. Let's say I'm chain staggering a bandit chief down, I dualcast a bolt, then if you immediately charge your next dualcast up and wait for the bandit lord to recover and then hitting, then yes, you won't get mana regen. Instead if you stagger him and just wait there doing nothing, mana regens. Then as the bandit chief is about to start charging again, I'll do a quick dualcast to stagger again. This way you can nearly regenerate a new dualcast bolt mid combat. Currently my mage that hasn't even touched any crafting skills is wearing a dragonmask for 100% regen, archmage robes that IIRC give 100%, a ring with 40% and the restoration perk that gives 25% (will get 50% once my resto is high enough). There's absolutely massive difference if I don't wear the items vs wearing them in my combat longevity.

Daedric lord is a bit broken, the other ones are oke, Daedric lord blocks, power attacks, tanks, its insane.

Yeah I can't beat this fire wizard at all. I even tried paralysis potions, but she kills me in the time it takes to get a shot off

I've had a few fights that were tough as a mage, mostly other mages. Not much you can do, go back for now and come back there when you have better spells/mana.

Seriously. I hid at almost max visual range, and I couldn't even get a sneak arrow shot at him cuz he immediately woke up and saw me the second my arrow left my bow. Wtf, lol.

Man that sounds tough. Do you have the full 3 words of Fus Ro Dah? I feel like once you get that, any 1v1 is a joke since it's like a free paralysis with every shout.
On an aside, whoever said dual-wielding sucks obviously never did a quadruple backstab in half a second as a dual wielding elven dagger thief.

One thing that was broke as fuck as my Mage was the fight vs Orchendor (boss of Peryite daedric artifact quest). Virtually immune to nonphysical damage.
I basically had to wield the mace of Molag Bal and have Fast Heal on the other hand, since he didn't really do that much damage with the elemental resist dragon mask on.
It became a huge fucking war of attrition. He couldn't really kill me, and I would just wail on him and keep him at about 20% health (he'd heal when he dipped lower). Me and my follower (also a mage) eventually killed him by each casting frost atronachs and I got a lucky stagger off into him going into yield mode, where I finished him.
Now he's my Dead Thrall, and he retains the resists, self healing, and happens to have high heavyarmor and onehanded skills. Dude's a fucking beast. You guys think Daedra Lords are busted? Fuck that. This asshole can fucking teleport.
For those of you confused, you can put armor on a dead thrall by looting them onto their corpse when the spell isn't active, then casting the spell, and zoning, and then they'll put the shit on. If I gave a fuck, I'd get a bunch of caster plate and suit him the fuck up.
Edit: Has anyone found any bugs with 1.3 yet? Apparently they still fucked up the book shelf thing but I really don't care about that at all. I did notice corpses creeping out properly.
