A valid argument in my opinion :p
Solution: substitute sleep with caffeine and sugar, eating six meals per solar day. Play Skyrim at night, work during the day. Problem solved.
It also helps to be an insomniac.

It's worth it but you will surely lose your real life in the meantime.

Is there a better tanky companion in Whiterun or around then Lydia? I am playing a Mage. I put Lydia in a whole suit of flawless Elven armor and gave her flawless Star forge steel axe and a superior Dwarven shield. She still gets defeated in every dungeon where there are more then 2-3 opponents. I am sorry to quote myself but nobody answered my questions.

Companions can only die if you kill them yourself. Don't know about better tanks..

This isn't true, I've had a couple companions (including Lydia) die to strong/semi-strong creeps if left unattended. Giants can one shot your companions, but I've seen them die to more standard variations of enemies as well. I haven't noticed any pattern but I'm guessing maybe they are killable when in their 'wounded' state, so if for some reason the attacking mob doesn't switch aggro to you, the companion may be killed. Not sure though, all I know is they can die without it being by your own hand.

Companions die if they get fucked up too much. If they are downed like over 3 times in short succession they dead.

They can die from friendly fire. I had that Azura priestess-thingy as a companion but now she's lost. Dunno if she died or I forgot her or something but I can't find her

only times lydia died was when i killed her. happened twice so far.
also: really hard to tell which follower makes the best tank as they are not scaling with your level but have to level on their own (afaik, as my lydia seems much better than the other followers i tried).

NPCs seem to detarget your merc the second they go down on their knees, so they cannot kill them with autoattacks. AE attacks such as dragon's breath or fireballs as well as your own attacks can still hit them, though, and this will kill them.

Sneak archery is very fun.

Companions go down when they have very little hp left and I am pretty sure mine died to a bandit powerattack which I was unfortunate to get hit by too and did over 120 damage.

I'll second this, but it's also pretty easy. Quite cool though, just powerful.
Edit: it also levels weird since I literally only used sneak and archery, you hardly ever get hit so once they plateau and I leveled ench/smithing I spent like 20 hours where i leveled once from misc lockpicking and shit lol before I decided to use some other combat stuff

Yea, I guess that works too. Mercs (and regular NPCs as well, actually) drop to their knees at around 10% health, so I guess a blow that does greater damage than this would kill them before they'd get any time to get kneeling.

Giant hitting your companion with that "up to the skies mofo" strike might not kill the companion with the initial hit...but the fall from low orbit altitudes will >_>

They wont die in combat if hit by an NPC, they'll always rez up. Though, if they're low HP and you deal friendly fire to them and it finishes them, they WONT rez. So you really have to be cautious and not kill your own companion.
If you're 100% sure your companion didn't die, just "Wait" for 1-2hours, and it'll come back.
And I don't know if there's better tank, as I'm using Jenessa, and she's tanking alright for me on Master difficulty, never had to switch.

Oh cool, haven't happened to me, but that's another possibility.

My Lydia wasn't dead when she hit the ground after 1min of falling through the air. So it might not be always the case.

People saying this game is easy, try to play on hardest difficulty. I play as a mage and even though I am lvl 25 I get two-shotted by the better dragons, maybe 3 shotted by the black dragons. So it's not easy, I think I even get one-shot killed by those Giants/Mammoths/Ice Sabers/Ice Bears etc. Of course don't know how it is playing melee maybe it is a little bit easier/harder.

My most fun build is by far the Illusionist/Destro mage, 100 in illusion with all master illusion spells can cause some serious havoc, especially with many mobs around. Then Invinsibility for sneak mode rocks! ^^

Companions are leveled depending when you discovered the area they are from. They also do not level up with you. Lydia, being one of the first companions, is probably too low for those areas and it getting owned. Go to a new town and get one there with higher stats and more health. Also, as a mage, try conjuring Atronachts or Dremora Lords to help with the tanking.

on PC you can just open console, click your companion and type "disable" then "enable" (without quotes) and the companion should lvl up to your own. Save before trying though, the NPC might respawn back at their home.
