Another week, another Steam promotion! This may be the biggest yet.
There's a chance to win 5 Steam games every 48 hours, with a grand prize of 100 Steam games on December 20th.
I'm not a member of any other forums where this contest is particularly interesting and I couldn't find any current threads about it. As I've enjoyed so much of TeamLiquid.net since I 're-discovered' eSports earlier this year that I thought I'd try and contribute something, even if it's not much.
I'll try to keep this thread updated as often as possible during the contest period; my apologies for any formatting errors, spelling mistakes, content fuck-ups, etc.
Note: I'm not affiliated with Steam or Valve to any degree.

**********Current Objectives**********
Round 7) December 20th
  • Log into Steam at any time between Monday, Dec 20 8:01pm GMT (GMT+00:00) and Tuesday, Dec 21 7:59am GMT (GMT+00:00)
**********Current Objectives**********

Contest Information:

Steam Official Announcement:
+ Show Spoiler +
Now through December 20th, the Great Steam Treasure Hunt will have folks spending time in the tropical sun, earning Steam Achievements in select games, joining Community groups, and earning a slot atop the Steam Leaderboards all in the name of winning free games. Every 48 hours a new set of four tasks will be announced. Select games will also be on sale throughout The Great Steam Treasure Hunt.

Completing a objective qualifies you for a drawing to win the top 5 games on your Wishlist. Each objective has its own drawing, so the more you complete, the better your chances. At the end of the Great Steam Treasure Hunt, there will also be three grand prize winners, each awarded 100 individual Steam games of their choosing. Importantly, our lawyers tell us at this point to say, "No purchase necessary" and to check out the official rules here: http://store.steampowered.com/treasurehunt.

The TL;DR version:
+ Show Spoiler +
  • Steam account required. (Free to do so.)
  • Steam Wishlist of at least ten(10) individual games required. (Free to do so.)
  • Four(4) new objectives every forty eight(48) hours. December 6th - December 20th.
  • Complete one(1) objective every forty eight(48) hours for the possibility of winning the top five(5) games on your Steam wishlist per forty eight(28) hours.
  • Complete ten(10) or more objectives before December 20th, and log into Steam during December 20th for the possibility of winning one hundred(100) games of your choice.

Simply put, 4 new objectives will appear on the official contest page every 48 hours.
For each objective that the user completes, they receive 1 entry into the drawing for the grand prize of 100 Steam games. (4 objectives*7prize periods = 28 possible entries per user)
Furthermore, for each 48 hour period that the user completes at least 1 objective, they have a chance of winning the top 5 games on their Steam wishlist.

Each individual objective will reward 5 winners. (4 objectives*5winners = 20 winners per 48 hours)
The grand prize of 100 games will be rewarded to 3 users who have completed any 10 objectives during the entire contest.

The games in which these objectives are based are also on sale for the same 48 hour period in which the objectives are activated.

Of the 28 objectives, 8 of them require no purchase to complete.

Additionally, for all Team Fortress 2 players, in-game hats will be rewarded for achieving a certain amount of objectives.
-"Bounty Hat" for 5 objectives
-"Treasure Hat" for 15 objectives
-"Hat of Undeniable Wealth And Respect" for 28 objectives (!!!)
To unlock your hat, make sure you click the button on the main Treasure Hunt page.

Treasure Hunt Objectives:

All links go to related Steam Store/Steam Community pages.

This is a really nice compilation. I actually just checked this out myself.

I know the idea is to have people buy the games that are on sale and to try to complete the objective of the day. However, I don't think I'll be buying any games unless it's a great deal.

This sounds like they're going to select 5 winners for each objective. I figured they'd just select the 20 from anyone who has completed at least one objective.

god damn this TF2 hat shit is just getting stupid. Today requires you to have shelled out at least $40 to just get the 4 objectives, and there's 6 more days after this? this shit needs to stop. I like everything else about this, but at this rate, people will be paying at least $200 for one hat

You don't have to get all 4 objects as far as I know to be entered in the 48 hr drawing. It just increases your chances.

I've been fairly lucky already in that I own one of the games but I doubt I'll purchase anything during this contest unless it was a game I was thinking of anyway.
With the wishlist requirement in both this contest and the previous one, and the new 'recommended games' feature, they really seem to be pushing the social networking side of Steam lately, which I'm not a fan of.

Assuming that there is one objective every 48 hours that is free to complete (7 total), I'd hope that they've structured it in such a way that an 'average' user who plays a few games is likely to earn 10 objectives too, if common/popular games receive objectives. That may just be wishful thinking though. Given that any prizes can't be gifted to other people, I suppose the people that have the time & money to complete all or most of the objectives are the ones to whom the free games will matter the least.

I don't often find myself disagreeing with criticism of the current state of Team Fortress 2, though I probably wouldn't be as disappointed by it if the whole store/trading/crafting system had been included from the very beginning. With that said, if someone can afford what they want then it's no business of mine how they spend their money (Polycount hat buffs notwithstanding).

I thought that myself, but I found this within the rules:

Sponsor will select five (5) winners by random drawing for each Treasure Hunt objective for each 48-hour period within 24 hours from the end of the period.

I may be interpreting it wrong, but if not then users who only complete free objectives may have a slightly better chance of winning for that individual drawing than if all 4 objectives were entered in to a single 20-winner draw. (If that fraction of a percentage really matters.)

The chance of winning the free objectives will actually be less.

I assume that the most completed objectives will be the free ones. Therefore, you'll only have 5 chances to win in a draw of a large pool of people. If it was drawn the other way, you'd have the same large pool of people with 20 chances to win and a smaller number of people who have multiple entries in that pool (due to completing the other objectives).

The best chance to win one of the 48 hour prizes is to complete objectives that few other people have. Aim for objectives that 1. involve unpopular games 2. have difficult objectives 3. people don't want to do. I'm probably just going to try and get 10 completed so I'm entered to win the grand prize.

Just Cause 2 is available for ~6$ right now and I'm unsure whether to buy it.

I recently got Prototype from the Steam deals and enjoyed it; JC2 seems to be similar (open world, random mayhem etc.). However, all reviews I've read so far were either horribly one-sided or mixed at best and didn't really help me to get a real impression of the game.

Any recommendations?

buy it!

6$ is a pretty good deal for this game!
i just bought it a few days ago for 15$ and it's well worth its money...(i should've waited for the 6$ deal...damnit )
it's a really big open world (not just one bigger city), lot of destruction and really actionrelated (over realism) with some good graphics.
quite fun for inbetween, destructing whole armybases, riding some choppers or planes and doing some missions...

however...does anyone already have more than 10 objectives for the treasure hunt done? seems quite hard to get more than that...

It's scary to see what people will do for hat's (the 28 one), i'm just trying to take advantage of the sales, l4d2 for $5 yesterday and now i'm thinking about buying Just Cause 2. I've finished 11 objectives from games that I already own and the free challenges. Also does anyone know how much Mafia 2 was? I was thinking about buying it if it was cheap but i was away during the sales.

Mafia II was 33% off during the sale. $33.49, I believe.

I'm 20/20 objectives so far. Hoping that the next couple objective sets' big-name games are ones that I already have, like Darksiders, Front Mission Evolved, or Borderlands.

Update on December 14-15

Steam Gimme (formerly known as "Sneak Peek")
Turns out this one is kind of hard to track. All eligible Steam accounts are now entered for this objective. Nice work!
(Of course you can always download and watch these trailers anyway - Deus Ex: Human Revolution, Homefront, BRINK, Red Faction®: Armageddon™, Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine and Portal 2)

I was wondering about this. I downloaded and watched all the trailers (Was actually worth doing. Wasn't sure what Homefront was, the BRINK trailer was pretty cool, wasn't sure what Space Marine was all about, and the Deus Ex one showed some good gameplay) and I didn't get the achievement. I guess this works.

Posting again to note that all objectives are now available and all that's left to do is log into Steam on the 20th. Good luck!

At one point I was tempted to push for the 15 objective hat, but after this latest update I may not even play the game at all any more.

I'm unsure what the price is in North America at the moment, but I'm in the UK right now and it's still listed as 33% off. (£29.99 £19.99 ~= $31.05)

How did you fare?
I managed 12 objectives myself and only bought one game during the sales - Zombie Driver.
It was for my partner as much as myself but why not buy it on my account and get the objective too? I found it surprisingly fun and almost feel like they could get much more out of the assets and engine than they have; worth the change it cost either way.

Yeah, virtually everyone I know who attempted this objective had a different experience with it working or not. What I was relieved to discover is that, now it's unlocked, I know that my account is eligible for all these prizes. I worried it wasn't as I've logged into multiple accounts from this IP in the past. It's all good.

Thanks for this, finally decided to do these things since it turned out I had 8 of them already by this stage just through stuff I'd done before.

Just finished my 15th, this was a handy resource for going through them. Going to stop now as I've about exhausted the limit of stuff I can do without paying for new games
