The last time I checked on the WarCraft 3 scene it was dying, and it was like the February of 2009. I can name only 5 players (Lyn, Sky, Ted, Infi and Wh0) who were actually paid well back then. And I guess the orc imbalance and the bad map pool also contributed to the fact that people are moving to SC2. I don't think that much can be done about it :S

The scene was way more active that that in Feb 2009. WC3L was still going on then, and FOX was starting to sign Korean players then. Plus, you didn't name Moon or Grubby on your list which pretty much shows how little you know. Also, it's easy to name more than 5 players now who receive a proper salary. Orc imba probably been exaggerated a lot over the years, though they did have a dominate period. Remind still won Blizzcon and WCG this year sooo. Map pool was always a problem, but certainly didn't kill the game by itself. The game has a couple of amateur leagues open in the EU/US, but the player numbers certainly has decreased massively since SC2. As for the pro scene there's still a few events, but the majority of them are in China and a few in Korea.

I don't think that much can be done about it :S You forgot Moon, Space, Grubby, TH1000, Check (before sc2), team mouz.sports (mouz.fly, etc), plus probably a few others that I'm forgetting. However, I agree that the map pool as well as the orc strength made the game really hard to play. However, it's still pretty big in China. However, I know Grubby, Lyn, Moon, and Check have switched to SC2 or are going to switch. It will be interesting to see what happens. I think competitive SC2 will start declining but it will take several years before the game itself becomes a graveyard.

Battle.Net was a horrible service for competitive play. There is a built in delay of around .6-.7 seconds no matter how fast your internet connection is, Hacking was rampant at nearly all stages of the game, some hacks worse than others. Nevertheless all the "Top" players moved on to Garena's service a while ago because that's where all the leagues were played, lowest delay possible etc. Summer 2010 was pretty much the last days of Wc3 in the US. Once Summer ended the top three US teams dissolved. KoD couldn't field enough players in a lineup to continue leagueing so they Merged with the arguable 3rd best team. The arguable second best team cGz closed their doors as well, and shortly after Infc/KoD merger fell apart and that team dissolved. With all the "top" players inactive/teamless they simply quit altogether or moved on to Sc2 (see Axslav/strifecro etc) Also, with only mid range skilled people and teams League Administrators saw no reason to continue with the league as no one would watch anyway so all of the leagues that mattered ICL/ICE/WCIP/WCO closed down. For a top Wc3 player there really isnt any reason to Play Wc3 anymore, alot more money in Sc2, and online cups with much more decent prize money are much easier to compete in. Only Drawback so far is a bunch of B and below ICCup players think that somehow makes them better than wc3 players (lol...) but who needs "respect" when there is money in your paypal acc? I don't personally see Wc3 reviving. I myself have played a few games here or there when the balance of Sc2 got too retarded, but the graphics are far too dated, Garena League scene is dead and Bnet is still as horrible as ever (at least you can play cross realm though) Really unfortunate because Wc3 had the advantage of being standardized and balanced so the better skilled player always won on top level (Orc vs UD aside).

The game stagnated with the very little support shown from Blizzard. Battle.net needed to change their tournament maps (why the hell is LT still in the official map pool?), ban the hackers, and remove the 250ms buffer delay they have. With the little support and SC2 on the horizon, it was obvious the War3 playerbase was going to shift.

I do agree that the competitive/high level scene is on it's last legs, though.

I remember playing it on dial-up and so it was designed to run on the slower internet as we didn't have the speeds that we have now then. This, they have to build for the lowest reasonable denominator and that was still AOL, oh god rofl.
