I've never understood the "I must never lose game one" mentality of some people.

As of now, a 3cc sorcery that does everything languish does is played in 50%-66% of the black or red matchups you play. Dash, burn, and proper sequencing gets around it. It will be true for the cheap wraths and it will be true for the expensive ones.


The thing is that a deck like MonoRed heavily relies on winning game 1. Similar to playing Affinity in modern. You have really good game 1 matchups and REALLY need to win them because other decks are significantly better vs you postboard. On the other hand, if you are playing a deck like Abzan Control, you can easily afford to lose game 1.

So I'm getting pulled into magic by some friends, played a bit when I was in school back in the days so I'm familiar with the rules, thing is, I'm starting from scratch and everything is so expensive!
We're still casual kitchen table style, but people are getting more and more tryhard about it (which is a good thing btw), bringing decks closer and closer to competitive modern decks like affinity.
Right now I'm trying to find decks that I like, not too expensive and making proxys to try them out, testing a bit around before I start spending cash.
Any recommendation, tip, anything? Especially to save money, from what I've seen so far, a sizeable chunk of a deck's price is in the land part, are they really critical or can they be replaced for cheaper alternatives? Is buying booster packs worth it considering I own no cards? My friend has insane luck, he got a foiled tarmagoyf from a modern master 2015 box, but I doubt this kind of things happens for commoners like me.
Lastly, any (somewhat) cheap deck you can recommend? I dislike rush and burn decks but other than that anything works.


Be nice, buy wards and don't feed double buff.

Lands are expensive but the thing with lands is that once you have them you have them for every deck you want to make in the future (barring you're willing to take apart the old one), so I personally think of them as an investment. You can run alternatives, but your deck won't be as fast/effective/consistent.

Packs aren't really worth it most of the time. Most of the cards you want you won't likely open, so just spend the money on events or cards for constructed. I personally enjoy playing sealed/draft events where you can get cards from packs and additional packs from prizes.

I can't really think of anything cheap outside of an aggro red deck right now. The MTGSalvation forums are a good place to read about some discussion about decks though if you haven't checked that out yet.

Personally I like the proxy idea since it allows you to start playing fun and powerful decks before dropping $100+ on bomb cards. But like what Draconicfire said, packs themselves aren't very cost effective. Buying the individual cards you're looking for will always be cheaper than hoping for pulls from packs. That's what the proxy strategy is good for since testing a deck really let's you know if it's worth it to pay money for the real cards.

Yeah it's not entirely stable yet but so far it seems at least a marked improvement from Duels 2015, which set the bar real low. I'm having fun with it, and I'm glad to be playing Magic again.

It's clear they are trying to scalp some of the more hardcore Hearthstone players, which makes sense. Hearthstone has proven that you can have a free to play collectable card game that is so fun people want to spend money on more cards, and MTG:O is ancient, difficult to use, and just as expensive as paper magic.

The new magic on steam is really cool. Now I'm waiting for some server fixes.

I bought coins in the shop, did the transaction and stuff, I received nothing and I still lost the money.
Hope it's due to servers and I can get a refund or get my coins.

The campaign in MD is pretty fun, but after every battle introduction ("You're a gutter rat that's been confronted by the city guards!") I can't help but finished with ".. so let's settle this with a CHILDREN'S CARD GAME"

Their servers keep going down and it loses any progress you had every time it does. Quite freaking annoying.

Magic Duels is bad. I didn't experience any connection issues but what got me disappointed is the fact that not all the cards from Origins will be in MD and there are rarity restrictions. Such a stupid decision.

Eh, they're going to be expanding at a fairly rapid rate. This is supposed to be their platform for all future releases as opposed to a DotP every year, so we're probably going to see regular increases in the size.

I have to admit, there is a certain charm trying to cobble together constructed decks from cards that are typically only fringe playable in limited.

TBH im confused. I was expecting magic duels to replace MTGO in the near future as the default client. Obviously i was wrong and MD feels like its purpose is to bait the players into the real thing.

It was made to replace the yearly DotP releases (which do precisely what you just stated), so it's not surprising.
