thanks. I'll try to write a report soon.

I'm curious about how you found out though lol.

Wow excellent man. Was such a diverse top 8 and I'm super stoked that Elves won , being one of my favourite archetypes.

Incidentally, do we have any other top 8'ers (of big events) in the thread?

Grats on making Top 8 of such a big GP! I like the spicy one-of Flame Javelin as well as the fact you didn't try to force in Atarka's Command where it wasn't necessary.

Yea >4 Skullcrack effects isn'tnecessary right now and the much less painful manabase effectively buys you a turn or two versus a majority of decks. Not sure if the one of Flame Javelin is the most optimal, but I just like all the applications of it. It actually won me a game because a Jund player couldn't discard it with IoK. (And everyone needs a little spice in their list!)

Legacy Burn question again:

So, playing last night at my local store. There's quite a few stoneblade match-ups: two of my four matches were against that deck. Overall, I went 3-1, losing to stoneblade in the finals.

I have a question about sideboarding in the matchup. Any game I lose against stoneblade is basically as a result of true-name nemesis (god I hate that card). The first time that tournament I played stoneblade I went 2-1, with the game loss resulting from a turn three true-name. In the finals, I lost game 1 due to some crappy draws (had him at 4 with a chain in hand, needed to draw burn to end, drew a land and a goblin guide instead), and I lost game 2 to a turn 3 true-name again. Basically, turn two stoneforge into a turn three true-name is just....almost unbeatable for me. When I'm on the play, I feel like I can possibly race them (turn 4 kill is pretty consistently achievable). Being on the draw is a bitch, though, that extra turn is just huge in the matchup.

I'm just wondering how effective an ensnaring bridge might be in the match-up. I think they usually only have 1 answer post-sideboard (1 wear/tear they put in for the eidolon/vortex), and I feel like it would stop true-name dead. Is it worth it to put some bridges in? Like I said, pretty much all of my losses are a result of a turn three true-name, and short of siding in red elemental blasts and leaving a mana up at all times (which doesn't seem super feasible to me) I don't know what else to do.

Turn 3 True-Name is meaningless in the burn matchup unless you're creature heavy. Its a turn slower than Goyf to cast and its a turn slower than Knight of the Reliquary to kill you with. For the most part, what sucks is their ability to gain life.

Usually this is Jitte => True-Name and since you can't kill the truename you lose with a Smash to Smithereens. Otherwise any 3 powered creature would kill you but they don't.

HOWEVER

Bridge is good in a lot of matchups burn is soft against. Reanimator, Nicfit (especially with 2-4 Thragtusks that they green sun for), etc...

There is nothing wrong with running Bridge in burn, and even siding it in game 2 or 3 (but not both) versus true-name decks. But for the most part, a hexproof trained mastodon should not be your weakness.

Yeah, I guess I should specify that it's the combo of jitte into true-name that is what I lose to. I can race a batterskull no problem, but TNN-Jitte is two turns quicker to life-gain. I just didn't mention jitte because when you talk about a stoneblade deck they are usually able to get whatever they want out equipment-wise. If there's a TNN, it's getting a jitte.

Basically, I carry bridges (usually two to three) in my sideboard anyways. I'm just wondering if it makes sense to sideboard them in when I'm on the draw in place of rift bolts, or something. I always sideboard in another vortex and three smashes (I turf lava spikes for these), but basically I'm wondering if eliminating either PoPs (this is a metagame decision based on if I know the guy and whether he has basics in his deck to play around it with) or rift bolts in favour of a few bridges might be worth it*.

EDIT: *on the draw, I still think I can race him on the play.

That's a gut call mostly. It's irrelevant majority of the time. But I always side out PoP game 2 anyway so try siding in bridges.

So, Origins has been completely spoiled. What are your thoughts on the set?

http://www.mythicspoiler.com/

I'm personally really enjoying the flavour for the set. Especially since they have those fun little tie-in stories about the origins of the planeswalkers.

From a limited perspective, I'm so happy Sigiled Starfish is in the set! I LOVED that card! lol though it looks like it is being printed at uncommon for this set instead of common. I also like Jthessian Thief for limited. Not sure what I'll do for pre-release, or even what we are choosing this time around.

From a modern perspective, there's been a lot of discussion surrounding Days Undoing in burn and perhaps affinity decks since they can dump their hands so quick. Not sure what's going to happen with that card. There's also a few ways to "break" the end of turn part but I don't think it's likely that combo will make an impact. The card itself may though. I pretty much hope to just pull it in one of my packs and sell it while it still is hyped to all hell and I think this card will be a dud like the many other Power 9 wanna bes before it.

Hallowed Moonlight I'm sure will be seeing some sideboard play to deal with any decks cheating out creatures, or creatures that have blink effects.

Goblin Piledriver might have a huge impact on the red aggro decks.

Days Undoing, Boros Charm, Atarka Command, and Bump in the Night makes an argument for Tribal Flames burn right?

I think if you play Day's Undoing in burn, you don't play Atarka's Command (and no one is doing Bump right now). The cost of 4 & 5c mana bases is too high right now imo, especially since Day's Undoing adds consistency, but cuts speed.

I've been playing a lot of burn, and I'm not completely sold on Day's Undoing actually. I think you'd want it in the board (when people are trying really hard to interact). I just been thinking about it and by the time you're casting it, they're only 1 or 2 burn spells away from death. Post board it gets way better because this card can straight up power through hate.

I think it has a ton of potential to be busted in Affinity though.

Fair enough. Whenever comments of multicolor in Burn/Zoo gets brought up I always have to bring up "But what about tribal flames?"

I haven't done a big event since last year... barely missed a legacy top 8 PIQ, got 9th with goblins ... was about 230 people, not quite big like a GP =x

I will probably be going to a GP at the end of the year, but the format is standard which is not my forte so I expect to fall on my face, but will be happy to day 2.

There is a lot of rumored talk about possible bannings in Legacy coming, namely attacking the miracles decks. I would be sad to see this as it is my current legacy deck of choice and I feel it is the warden of the format keeping decks in check.

Completely agree with your take on Day's Undoing. I see a lot of people putting 4 of in standard burn lists as their theorizing after origins, and I don't get it. If you play an abzan aggro deck or another burn deck... the last thing you want to do is power their hand. I would definitely sideboard it in standard, but my current red burn list for post origins is actually splashing a swamp and 4 Self-Inflicted Wounds instead in the board, which takes my ability to play it.

This card is going to be bonkers in affinity. The question is, how do you balance this card and thoughtcast in your deck, what ratio is the perfect one? That will take testing.

Pre-release time is coming soon! Looking over the colors, I feel like the best bet for winning is picking red primarily due to the quality removal (comparatively at least, it isn't even close). With that said, I'll probably play 2-3 of these events this weekend, and the timmy in me will have to choose green at some time to play 'dem fatties. The removal is really bad in this set, so having a monstrous creature seems even scarier than usual.

As to my feelings on the set overall, I'm unimpressed and not very interested. The best part to me is simply moving away from drafting DDF again - that got old quick. There isn't a card here that will see play in any of my modern decks (all tron variants basically) so that's disappointing as well. Days Undoing seems to be the main card to look out for having a big impact in a couple "dump your hand" decks like Affinity.

I can't exactly pinpoint why but I didn't like any of the sets ever since Theros came around the only exception beeing M15. I will draft this set a bit online but that's it really. I also hoped they would include some iconic cards for the last core set, something like BoP maybe but instead they state that 1cmc manadorks are too high power level now. Sad days.

Anyone do the midnight pre-release? I'm going this morning within the next hour. After reading more articles on it like http://www.channelfireball.com/home/pvs-prerelease-primer-for-magic-origins/ as well as the Limited Resources spreadsheet on the grades ( http://imgur.com/a/sap0U for a visual on it ), I'm thinking I pick white as the seeded pack for the best chance at winning now. Red still seems up there as one of the best. I'm surprised green is rated so poorly. I'll still play green anyway sometime this weekend for funsies and the seeded pack might not matter that much.

I did. Ended up going 0-2 with a decent deck due to bad mulligans (to 5 twice and 4 once) and a bit of not reading what cards do. Opened a Nissa and a Piledriver though, so there's that.
