Zoo is the defining deck of the format. If a deck can't beat Zoo, it's probably not viable. There's only been a couple major Modern tournaments so far. This link gives the top 16 decks of the $2K Modern tournament held at the TCGplayer championship last weekend.

Going to play some this weekend. I should probably just buy the 2012 standard boosters right? I think I saw that a lot of the "current" stuff is being phased out by the end of September. I like tournaments a lot and since I am just getting my deck rebuilt I would assume I should go into a sealed or 8 player draft. Please correct me if my thinking is wrong.

The new way Standard rotates is that the earlier block and the previous year's core set are phased out at the same time, when the new set is released (i.e. when Innistrad is released, Zendikar block and M11 phase out).
If you don't have a standard deck ready, sealed/drafts are a great idea. glhf!

i love magic the gathering cause its like starcraft, i mean its strategic, analitical and just as awesome, i used to play this a lot on school(not so much these days but would like to comeback :D), and i loved control decks, and creature decks, they were awesome.

Tested Monoblue 12post for modern today, It pretty much consistantly crapped all over zoo, (turn 3 gain 3 life, cast wyrmcoil, turn 4 untap cast All is Dust, win game). Gifts Ungiven not banned makes baby jesus cry.

So I haven't kept track of mtg/mtgo
What the heck is Modern, how similar is it to the other formats (I'm only like familiar with Vintage, Legacy, Extended, and Standard....
>_<''

Modern is a new format that is most likely replacing extended. Extended was changed last year to only be 4 block instead of the last 8 or so years. Modern, goes all the way back to when the new card frames were implemented (8th edition). They have said that modern was to be eternal but it is unlikely that this is actually the case.

I don't think anyone really can say much about the new modern format since there really hasn't been any major tourney's played yet. All people can do is speculate..
Upcoming GP in PA this weekend will be Modern for the constructed format so this tourney will really set the bar for what decks will likely be staples. I can pretty much say for sure that there WILL be many different decks being played and the field will be extremely diversve which is actually pretty exciting. Really great environment for rogue builders.
Modern is way better than extended since nothing will ever rotate out. The only changes will be new sets rotating in as well as changes to the banned list.

Do you mean the upcoming PT? The GP is Standard.

I can say without a doubt in my mind, that Zoo, Hive Mind, 12 post and UR Combo Deck (Dstorm/Pyromancers/Spliter Twin) will all be a staple of some kind. Death Cloud will also be played, but to what power level I have no idea.

i really hope 12post hits it big. I recently got gifted a playset of vesuvas

It has tested very well Orpheos, especially the mono blue version. Who knew counter spells and bounce magic could be so powerful in a deck that casts turn 3 wyrmcoil followed by turn 4 All is Dust.

Sort of curious about it? Can you play it on MTGO? Do people play it on MTGO? Is it actually popular? The reason I ask is I last played during the Lorwyn/Conflux(?) block and I had a deck that was absurdly broken in that block and unless Modern is silly broken it should still kick ass. I always liked playing the duels of the planeswalker to get used to some of the new mechanics. Last time I played for a real game it was in the 7th edition which was pretty basic. I am interested in an answer on this as well. I dont think modern is out online yet, i think it was JUST announced/released. So I'd assume it would be a while before it transfered to mtgo Very true. You can play modern, but you have to put "Freeform" and type "Modern" in the notes. That's at least what I see people doing in casual room. Modern will be an official MODO format starting on the 24th (next Wednesday), with 2-player queues, 8-player queues, Daily Events, and Premier Events (the first on the 27th), leading up to a Modern Championship on September 11th. That's good to know, so anyone got any ideas on the deck and if it's still viable? I know NOTHING about modern.
Not viable, sorry. When Tarmogoyf is a 2-mana 4/5 and Knight of the Reliquary is a 3-mana 6/6, it's hard to justify playing a deck that accelerates to 5 and 7-mana 5/5s.
Problem is, this is an old Standard deck. Standard encompasses 2 blocks at a time, Modern encompasses 9, so you're only playing with 1/4 of your available options. Even a standard Jund or Faeries deck would have no chance at succeeding in Modern. If you're familiar with Legacy, Modern is pretty close to the power level of that format.

i had UW stoneforge jace ancestral all sleeved up for modern and then they banned 1/5th of that deck
also they banned glimpse, good thing the entire modified combo elves deck costs less than a single Tarmogoyf (seriously wtf)
|
They better reprint Tarmogoyf to have its price drop, or I'll just stick to standard.

You and me both, but I'm glad it happened. I didn't want to play 10 mirrors of the damn thing.

I finally made the leap from Pauper to Standard. So far I'm having a blast, though I am running a UB mill deck, and that has been getting a lot of BM from other players.

Also, Illusions is seeming more and more legit as a standard strategy. Turn 3 Wurmcoil, Turn 4 swing for 15 seems legit.*
(Turn 1 bear, turn 2 lord, turn 3 GA tap for Wurmcoil, Turn 4 swing + U to make Wurmcoil Blue).

Hmm with modern coming to MTGO today, I have to decide if I want to build a deck around standard or modern. Modern might be a bit tough to do right now since I am far behind on my collection. (Last cards I bought before this past weekend were M2010).
If I am reading this right for standard the following sets will still be usable or not usable at the end of Sept.
•Zendikar (until September 30. 2011)
•Worldwake (until September 30. 2011)
•Rise of the Eldrazi (until September 30. 2011)
•Magic 2011 (until September 30. 2011) •Scars of Mirrodin (Usable until announced) •Mirrodin Besieged (Usable until announced) •New Phyrexia (Usable until announced) •Magic 2012 (effective July 15, 2011) •Innistrad (effective September 30, 2011)
I am just not sure when the Mirrodin and Phyrexia sets will no longer be usable under the standard format. I haven't got any boosters for Mirrodin and Phyrexia yet just a few of the M2012 booster packs. Should I bother with Scars of Mirrodin, Mirrodin Besieged, and New Phyrexia or wait for Innistrad and just focus on the core and innistrad cards?

Yeah, I can see how that would be annoying, especially in draft where you've almost always got limited removal. And your guys keep getting bounced back to your hand. One of the big combo's in my deck is turn 1 drop Darkslick Shores, hit them with Inquisition of Kozilek and then Surgical Extraction my choice. Usually I'll pick mana leak, or something annoying like that.
