The problem is drafts at stores are very bad EV because the store has to make a profit to continue running. Where on MTGO you get much better EV.
Edit: Something that you can do with friends is buy a box together splitting the price and then draft between each other. I find this to be a lot of fun and much better EV if you still want to draft with physical cards. Also you can often get new people involved and interested and create a kind of FNM between friends.

I only draft at stores where it's $10 (usually tuesdays), which is a pretty decent deal IMO. Even buying packs from bots online it's hard to get that rate, if you even can.
EDIT: Drafted M13 yesterday, so many good cards and none of them are rares >.>

Well draft around here is 13, but the prizes are top heavy so its pretty easy for good players to go infinite. Winning or splitting top just once is enough to draft for free two more times.

Man, I am really glad I live near the CFB store. These other stores sound terrible.

Idk no ones really actually listed what their prize structures are so I don't know how to tell, what are CFB entry fees/prize structures?

The place by me does a 12 dollar entry fee to do a 3 booster draft (one each from RTR block). The top 8 (30-40 typically enter) get prizes ranging from 5 dollar store credits (which cannot go towards a future draft) to a 50 dollar store credit for the #1 finisher, plus a promotional card or small batch.
There is also a roll off to give away a few boosters and promo cards for people who did not place.

I personally hate any draft with more than 8 ppl basically I refuse to draft at stores that just make 1 big tournament instead of just having the drafts contained within the pods . I'm sure 50$ for a draft is a good deal for those that routinely win there though. Just something about playing against people that drafted at a completely different table than me seems off.
|
50 dollar for first is low for 30-40, at my store it would be closer to 50-60 for a split and around 70-80 for outright win.
|
I wish we could get that many people drafting....we're lucky if we hit 15.

You do and you don't, it's not fun to spend 6 hours drafting at FMN.
|
My store does several pods of 8 or 6 depending on numbers, prizes are quite bad though, people get to choose from opened boosters where the rare is revealed in place order, so 1st usually gets something good and the rest gets shit. But the people are friendly and I don't really play constructed so I don't mind too much.

Perhaps, but it always sucks when you have nights like last night, where I drafted a sick exalted deck, then drew 6 lands and a dude, 5 lands and an enchantment, 5 lands, 3 lands and a dude 3 games in a row, then smashed my next 2 matches for a solid 4th of 10. 5 rounds is always nice to deal with unlucky shit like that.

Wow, that seems very nontraditional. Usually we have 3 pods of 8 and the winner gets a couple packs or whatever. There is one place that does 8 man pick draft for 10 bucks, I can see a very strong player making out like a bandit on that one - all rares go into the pot and all foils too. Winner takes 1st pick rare and foil, then it goes 2-8 back to 1.
One guy seemed like he would top three about 90% of the time, so I'm sure he broke even at least, plus he got to nickle and dime all the O-rings and Doom Blades and Selesnya Charms.

I understand your reasoning, but to increase the sample size by like less than 10 games is pretty insignificant.

I'm starting to put together a constructed RTR block only deck for use in "free for all" multiplayer with friends:
3 each of the 10 guildgates (30)
1 each of the following: (31)
Maze's End each of the 5 DGM gatekeepers Armory Guard Ogre Jailbreaker Gatecreeper Vine Hold the Gates Way of the Thief Gateway Shade Crackling Perimeter Greenside Watcher
Righteous Authority Niv-Mizzet, DracoGenius Insperia, Supreme Judge Mercurial Chemister Sphinx's Revelation Thoughtflare Enter the Infinite Last Thoughts Scatter Arc Tin Street Market Bane Alley Broker Fathom Mage Prime Speaker Zegana Urban Evolution Zamack Guildmage Deadbridge Chant Give/Take
The first group are cards that benefit from having gates; the second is cards which help with acquiring more cards. I just put this list together and haven't analyzed it yet to see how imbalanced the mana requirements are; I also have no experience with 5 color decks. In a relaxed free for all setting this could be a lot of fun.
edit: + Show Spoiler +This is probably what you guys look like reading through this post:

So I want to ask you why you aren't building EDH at this point. It's not as expensive as you think and leads to more fun games if you enjoy these kind of games.

I have no idea what that is but I do not control what rules we play with. I'm also sticking to the current block since that's all I've been acquiring.

Ah, look up Commander or EDH. Then pitch it to your play group. It's a fun format if you have a good play group.

It's not so much for dealing with deck variance as it is with being able to play more games to get a decent win % after a shit luck game. Of course, you can get those many times in a row so I guess it doesn't matter, it just feels better when I go 4-1 and lost due to shit draws than when I go 2-1 due to shit draws.
|
Whats to not say you go 3-0 due to some good luck and then finish 3-2. Your situation actually works out because you didn't stay 5 hours for a 3-2 finish. See the bad side of it?
