as far as deckbuilding goes, thats honestly in your own preference and experience, but most of the time its near guaranateed 3/4 color for RTR. go check out some community sites/draft techs on youtube if u really wanna know as far as building/gameplay goes.
but in regards to a ptq event, i can't express this enough. EAT SOMETHING BIG BEFORE YOU GET THERE AND HAVE SOME KIND OF SNACK MIDWAY. ptqs are reallllllllly reallllly long so it may affect your play if you get hungry. If your round is completed early, per se 30-40 minutes remaining on the clock, find somewhere to buy lunch asap or pack a lunch. also, your opponent will not have your best interest in mind at any time, dont be afraid to ask a judge for a question or not allow an opponent to take back a mistake that they had resolved. :D

Finally decided to use those "new player" tickets in MTGO to play some phantom draft to pass time and have some fun (haven't played it very actively outside of some friends wanting to play with Planeswalker cards or initial M13 pool that came with account), got pretty decent GU deck together, no good rares on any boosters though. Tbh it was a lot more fun than I expected, just seems to be a bit hard to get the events running even if it is "only" 4 players.
First round against some GR who had snathed the seemingly only Rancor that was out there, was pretty much cruising through the games with no issues, the second round however was against a dude who had pulled Rhox Faithmender, Planar Cleansing and Redirect and seemed to get them in every game whenever they were needed, dayum that UW was nasty stuff. Completed with different lifelinkers, flyers and combat tricks he had some real badass drafts.
First two games were pretty even despite all that, ending in 1-1 after some few life difference finishes both games in some 15 turns of combat tricks and trading, I was pretty excited to play against someone like this, he seemed to have generally better cards which made me try harder.
I think the fun part here is, if I hadn't misplayed in second game versus him I might have lost. How so? Well he Planar Cleansed my board advantage and I managed to save one of the bigger creatures with unsummon, only to misclick and play Centaur instead of it next turn, well he seemed to save mana in heaps so I sensed something was wrong despite having some cards, so I continued and played Drake to chip on him in addition in stead of the big guy.
He soon gave up on waiting having a clock put on him and cast that Archaeomancer to re-play Planar Cleansing. I dropped the big guy after that and with few combat tricks back and forth finally chopped him down.
I was excited, I had a shot on beating him despite feeling like being severly handicapped in the matchup and cards selection. Nothing prepared me for what was coming next... You probably expect me to just say that the last game was lackluster or he quit or I manascrewed etc. but no, the gods of cards were giving some treats today!
What I would end up playing was a massive 20+ turn stalemate of topdeckked combat tricks, careful play and huge turns.
The game progressed from early small trading to careful measurement, he started to get huge life advantage with that 2life/man played cat person combined with Lifemender, I was about to lose to his air dominance, but baited him to Redirect my Prey Upon to save the life cat only to Switcheroo his best flier equipped with a color fitting Ring to some 1/1 early chump as he was out of mana after Redirect.
As turns slowly passed, his clock was starting to draw closer to zero, while mine had some minutes more left, my library started to reach zero due Tome's drawing power (I had topdeckked Hydrosurge and other stuff with it to save my ass during few critical turns, so I would probably have lost had I not used it.) I finally drew my Tricks of Trade during the last few cards and equipped it on now massive guy to chip his health from 39 into sub 10 in few turns, yet it was not enough. He managed to salvage the game with Safe Passage after all the time, he had thrown Sleep to almost kill me, I had Downpoured most of his offense in answer and all that stuff during the earlier turns.
Game ended with him having 20 seconds left on clock, our life being 3 for me and some 6 for him (with final creature advantage on me after he blocked my big ass trampler with plenty of dudes) and I finally ran out of cards to draw, despite stopping using tome after counting the rest of the deck being mostly lands and no longer needing clutch draws to survive some turns ago. He had only few cards left too, mostly lands also if I counted right. I can't be even sad about losing after playing such long and intense game, it was great!
Whew, that was long. Felt like sharing it.
I'm a bit worried about getting caught in this and my wallet dying if I start to draft for real. :D

Was going to be a total bitch and just not go to the PTQ tomorrow b/c of a punt I made Tuesday drafting. Just feel like I'm not good enough to compete, but fuck it. Big boy pants time. I'll be in Mesa, AZ tomorrow. Anyone else going to it?
Edit: Realized I didn't say what the punt was...
I have 2 life and am dead next turn, he has 4 life and I have a 2/3 flier. I draw and can't think of a way to win. Scoop. Immediately after scooping I remember I have the 2/2 bear to scavenge in my gyard. Sigh...

I'm quite a noob at magic, playing kitchen table with some of my friends, but what got me into the game was the duels of the planeswalkers games on PC, or iPad(PS3, and X-Box too) and you can get it for cheap over the christmas sales :D, it should teach you the basics of the game.

For learning I would suggest one of the free versions of online-magic play. Its free and you can check out if you really like it .

I'd say you can begin anywhere, before getting it you should probably look through the most basic mechanics from somewhere, unless you already know them. MTGO lets you get a taste of drafting too with the new player phantom events (you don't get to keep the cards though), Duels has pretty weird time system and lays out very simplified phases, many of the free programs I don't know.
The good thing about MTGO though is, there's almost always some of the support staff on in almost every channel who will answer your questions.
It's still probably good idea to play with some of your friends if any has real cards, though I remember my friend back in day taught me some things wrong lol.

I still recommend Duels of the Planeswalkers. It's a $5-$10 drop on Steam, depending on if there's a sale or not. Won't get you too far, but it'll definitely get you started.

Thanks to everyone who replied! My concern is actually my location. Though my country has a lot of MTG players, a lot of them play on stores which I don't really have time to do due to college and work. I love you guys! No homo... Unless you're a girl I guess.

Exhausted. More punts than the Cardinals. 3-3-1. I'll do a write up tomorrow. Every loss was bc of a punt on my part. This deck could have top 8'd easily if I hadn't scrubbed. First ptq so whatever. Still disappointed.

Is it Yuuji Okita's deck? At first I was amazed to see Chronic Flooding. But the more I think about it, the more ingenious the deck becomes. Looking at top 8 there doesn't seem to be many graveyard hosing cards like Rest In Peace either. So much self-mill sheesh.

I mull to 6, get stuck on 3 lands for a single turn but it's enough to put me on my back foot.

I win off of rescue > vassal soul > decoy > voidwieler > he controls me pretty hard for a few turns while I'm stuck on mana but uses his syncopate on deadbridge goliath after which I... > eyes in the skies (he's at 8 life with no fliers but plenty of ground dudes) > collective blessing

He gets out vitu-ghazi guildmage and I lose while sitting on 4 land unable to bounce the token he makes T6 with a voidwielder in hand.

Drudge beetle beats him down to 10 b/c he won't trade his gmage for it. Eyes in the skies EoT > Collective blessing seals it for me.
G3 - First punt
I use blustersquall to keep him from getting card draw off his stealer of secrets. He has nothing else on board. Why did I do this? >.< Game continues on and I get him down to 4 before he topdecks a stab wound on my goliath that slowly kills me from 10 while he just proliferates his bird tokens as blockers for my goliath and blocks my other creatures with trestle and his axebane.

We both get down to 4 life and I have him DoB, he plays a teleportal and I bounce once of his attackers leaving me at 1 life and he dies.
G2 - Second punt
He has me down to 12, I have him at 8. I tap out on my turn to play collective blessing with birds in hand.... Wrong order means I play eyes on my next turn only to watch him teleportal me for 12 dmg.

He teleportals me from 15 when he's at 3.

I mull to 5, have him DoB if I get the turn back b/c I have a flier that has been scavenged onto by a decoy and beetle but I'm only at 12 life. He swings for 18 (I block his cobblebrute and dead reveler with my ground dudes) launch party takes away the last two of my life.

He resolves t3 underworld connections. t4 eyes > t6 collective blessing gets me there.
G3
He plays thrill kill into trestle troll into underworld connections (plays the connections knowing I have a decoy on board). I swing with decoy > savage surge kills his troll. Eyes in the skies. Righteous Authority on my goliath (greedy probably) gets punished by ultimate price immediately. Sitting on 5 land while he whittles me down with thrill kill. Finally hit my sixth land and play the collective blessing I've had in hand since the start.

I have a Righteous Authority'd gmage that I've been getting in for 6 with every turn via giving him flying. Have him at 8. Swing in, get greedy with a MERCURIAL CHEMISTER ON BOARD, savage surge, he activates chemister and discards the 6cost black 3/3 scavenge flier. There was absolutely no need to surge since I could just kill him the next turn.
G2 - Fourth punt
He has me down to 10 life, I have him at 16. I resolve collective blessing with bird, voidwielder, detained vassal soul, and justicar on the field. He has no blockers since he's trying to race me and swung with all his fliers and ground dudes sans seller the previous turn. I have righteous authority in hand, but I'm tapped out. I decide to swing with bird token only taking him to 12 instead of potentially taking him to 3 if he doesn't chump with his seller and 8 if he does because I want to play around a knightly valor. He swings with his fliers except for 1 bird and takes me to 8 (keyrune and 2/3 1WW dude) and detains my soul again (went inaction > unblockable spirit) My turn I play Righteous Authority and realize fuck... I could have won this turn if I had swung out last turn, but I'm still ok. I swing with bird since he can chump with his ground guys without losing his unblockable spirit and take him to 1 (three cards in hand). His turn he swings with unblockable and keyrune, leaves back his 2/3 takes me to 4. He has one card in hand he drew last turn. It's blustersquall. I'm horrible at magic.

Round 7 (Haven't dropped b/c my friend is 5-1)

I decide I don't want to punt just games, I want to punt in real life too! Background: they have multiple signs reading who gets paid what. I read and see top32: 3 packs. I'm ranked 32nd according to standings. Ask the dude I'm playing if he just wants to draw into top 32, he's ranked 33rd, but fuck it he'll get into the prize pool if not everyone draws. He thinks it over, and is like sweet man ok let's draw my deck sucks. We draw, I play him anyways because he wants to for grins, and he was right; his deck sucked ass. I 2-0 him in 10 minutes.

I go watch my friend finish up his match by losing to a G3 sphinx's rev for 7 after my friend swings in off a blustersquall and only drops his opp to 3. Opp swings back for lethal off a knightly valor he drew. He played b/c he loses tiebreaks all the time (nickname bubble boy since he has finished 9th 3 times this season), had horrible tiebreaks when they posted standings after round 6, and just got 9th last weekend going 5-1-1. So we're both bummed but hey he's 5-2, 9 packs for top 16 and I'm in top 32 for 3 packs.
Turns out I can't fucking read. Only 17-24 get 3 packs and so when the dude doesn't call my name to come grab three packs I walk up to him and I'm all, you must have missed my name, can I have my three packs. Dude looks at me and is like only 17-24 gets 3 packs and I even extended it to 26 (I was 27th, dude I drew with was 28th). I'm like wtf but the signs... I walk over to the sign and see 17-24: 3 packs. I'm a horrible person. Not only have I fucked myself, but the other guy who agreed to draw with me (in spite of losing our little exhibition) is probably pissed I talked him into drawing out of the prizes. It's three packs so my friend and I are DYING laughing because he's seen me punt all day and I just intentionally drew myself out of packs. FUCK. Anyways, my friend hasn't been paying attention and he hasn't heard his name called once they announce 9-16. That's funny, wtf? He goes up and talks to the guy giving out packs. He's the only 5-2 that didn't top 16, he came in 17th and got 3 packs. His tiebreaker got beat by someone who went 5-2 and beat my final opponent to come in 16th. It went to third tiebreaks. If I had chosen to play and win instead of draw my friend would have been 16th instead of that guy. So now my nickname is punter and he is bubble boy. Damn.
Regardless, I haven't laughed that hard in a long time and I really enjoyed myself in spite of all the punts. Can't wait for my next PTQ
