Back to the teasing. Waiting for the draft to go horribly wrong as he gets tempoed out by Azorious leading to the proclamation that there are in fact 3 viable archtypes in this draft format and not just the 2 as previously thought.

Of course the draft went horribly wrong. I picked a worldspine wurm. Never even saw it in my hand, never pulled one of my 3 axebane's, never pulled jarad's..

Must be tough taking a "bomb" and losing to commons and uncommons. Worldspine Wurm, not for drafts.

Waiting for the inevitable fuck mtgo rng post now.

Edit2:

So me and a friend was disussing the merits of Bloodfray Giant versus Desecration Demon and which is actually better in draft. Thoughts?

Hi,

I just picked up mtgo and I'm about to dive into standard play. I traded my booster for 3 tickets so I have 5 in total. Does anyone know a good way to spend those tickets on a deck? I'd rather spend very little on cards but what do you think is a good amount of cash to dish out on a average performing standard deck?

Thanks for the input! Im kinda lost in the woods here. There is just soooo many card and so much information to wade through

In my last limited event there was also a guy who claimed to literally never make mistakes when playing mtg or building draft/sealed decks.
When I asked why he was in the same table as me (low points) he told me he went 0-4 :D

Btw I think limited has been bomb oriented for a long time already. At least the ones I attended. The difference of power between the good rares (which are many) and the commons/unc is just too big sometimes.

Here you can find scheduled events that have run on MTGO, with the decklists and winners (bottom right column):
https://www.wizards.com/Magic/Digital/MagicOnline.aspx?x=mtg/digital/magiconline/whatshappening

Here you can find decent (slightly higher than you could find if you looked elsewhere) prices for mtgo cards:
http://mtgotraders.com/

Here you can find articles, and (more importantly) videos of people playing MTGO drafts/events (which is very helpful for learning the interface):
http://www.channelfireball.com/category/articles/
http://draftmagic.com

Here you can find streams of people playing MTGO (only lists popular pros/streamers/events):
http://mtgpulse.com/streams

If I was just starting out on MTGO, I'd value these resources the most. Obviously, mono-red of some description would be the most competitive standard deck you can make for ~5 tickets, but some people don't enjoy playing that type of deck.

Thats not the definition of bomb oriented. Bomb oriented is like SOM block draft where a single card can take over games against multiple kinds of decks consistently. That is not the case here. Having a bomb inceases your chance of winning for sure, but its always been like that. There are answers in either direct cards or themes. Good play can still squash a bomb handily (again not the case in Scars block).

Also at sonatasc2, you keep saying things like that changes things when I am basing things off of what you have already whined about. Others are thinking the same thing, I am just saying it.

From my experience, neither card does a great job saving you when you are behind, I don't think either is a stabilizing play. Bloodfray Giant is probably the superior threat when you are ahead on board. Desecration Demon the superior card when the board is at parity.

Fair assessment. We were thinking that Demon is garbage against good players on curve. Meanwhile Giant like you said is a much more potent threat on curve.

Edit: I don't think either goes into a deck that can afford to be behind.

I have to disagree, especially given our last couple of "advanced" (not counting core set) draft formats. Because Limited only includes the cards in a set, the interactions tend to be relevant and powerful. Sometimes, these synergies fall a bit flat - like R/G Werewolves in 3x Innistrad wasn't all the sudden unbeatable because you have 2 Moonmists and a Full Moon's Rise. But they are still powerful enough to win Limited games.

Think about 3x RTR: do you need a Chaos Imps or Hellsteed to build a winning Rakdos Deck? Of course not. Bloodfray Giant is a freaking rare. You can put 9 power on the board on turn 4 with commons. Vitu Ghazi and Rix Maadi Guildmages just win games. Did you need Wolfir Silverheart to draft the bonkers U/G Soulbound deck? No because you somehow managed with Druid's Familiar on turn 4. Boohoo.

There's always very powerful rares that you shove into your pile right away: Geist-Honored Monk, Mecurial Chemister, Gideon Jura, Harvester of Souls(..at least I think it's amazing..) But I think the more you play Limited the less you can bear to hear people say "Oh, yeah, he ripped Mikaeus, the Unhallowed off the top so I lost." You open packs too. Every pack has a rare. Somehow, the world works out so that you get to play with them too.

Thank you for the input! Do you know of a deck builder site that also lists the card prices(on average) so that you can build a deck with a cash budget?

EDIT: http://mtgotraders.com/ does what I want. Is there any other site like that?
EDIT2: WTH, the top rated decks will cost around 100$ . Is that really what stuff is going to cost?

I normally build a deck in mtgo that I want (minus the lands and cards I already own). Then I open trade with an mtgotradersbot and load the wishlist deck in. Since they have such a big stock, the bot will probably have most, if not all, the cards and you can just look at the price the bot gives. You might want to look around different places to see if you can get better prices (especially for more expensive cards) but that is a good place to start to get a general idea of what a deck will cost.

Ya, if you want a top tier deck, it will normally cost $100 or more. Though there are decks that are not top tier but still competitive for cheaper. Any strong, popular deck will be expensive because a lot of people want those cards (especially planeswalker heavy ones).

I'm going with Desecration demon for sure. Being outside traitorous impact range is relevant imo.

Edit: Wait I just always assumed demon had trample. Lack of trample makes it worse in a format were 1/1 token fliers are common. Dodging Traitorous impact doesn't make as having trample when both are still vulnerable to assassin's, ultimate price, arrest, etc. Bloodfray Giant is my pick. Unleashed he's outside of 3 power kill range.

See thats the conclusion we had come to as well. Just thoroughly convinced that Giant is better than Demon.

Maybe it's me, but I look at Desecration Demon and think it's either wtf amazing or terrible. Like in draft I'd imagine it's really good, but in Standard it probably sucks.

Before RTR came out (so during the spoiler season) I was durdling around with a Jund deck that had Desecration Demon and Fling. The general idea was to get in some early damage, stall the ground game with Thragtusk, drop the Demon, force them to feed it +1/+1 counters until they can kill it with something like Sever or O-ring, and then Fling it at their face. IT seemed ok, but then I realized that ANYONE who had green was running 4 Tusks, so life totals would be an effective 25-35 life, which is just not enough to give up 2 cards and several turns' worth of board stalling to deal 7-10 damage at once, only to have the damage blunted or removed by a couple of 5/3 dudes.

Edit:

After watching the Pro Tour over the weekend, I now have some ideas as to what I'd like to play for GP Chicago in a few weeks. Right now the decks I'm looking at running are Affinity (probably Blue Affinity) or Messenger + Shaman Jund.

For old vs new example: If you forget to activate you huntmasters effect to gain life and make a wolf token, you probably won't ever get those effects now. In the the old, you would probably tell a judge and probably get its effect and maybe rewind game state if its not too late.

I personally don't like the rule because it can lead to very sketchy stuff. Like you can pretend to forget a trigger or claim your opponent never declared the trigger.

I see nothing wrong with this. Punishes being bad. +1 from Risen.

What if you forget trigger to flip huntmaster back over and then atk for lethal with 4/4 trample?

Then I guess your opponent should have caught the trigger. Again, punishing being bad.
