Oh! Also since a post or two before me had mentioned the site D2D They are having some kind of promotion where they give you 20% off on the pre-order of rift.

Is this still active? I thought this was a few weeks ago. Pricing doesn't reflect on their site.

EDIT: There is a promo for 20% with a code, but it does not effect pre-orders.

Copy the code and paste it when you are checking out.

I found this one the Rift Forums. Not the original link I saw but it works the same. Some people there on the forums have the code and are giving it out. It benefits them because they get a few bucks thrown their way if someone makes a purchase using their code.

You will still be eligible to purchase the founders subscription.

That made me giggle. RIFT = 3 classes. GW = 1.75 classes.

I can see the similarity with GW in that you have a wide pool of skills available to your character, while how you pick and choose those defines what type of role you will play.

[B]Concerning world pvp I read something on the alpha (basically the beta but 24/7) about some things they were adding in soon. You can control regions by putting down one of those stone things and building them up, you can also destroy the other factions, or take their territory. And also there was something about controlling an area and getting a shot at some raid boss type thing, sounded a bit like wintergrasp but it took place in a regular zone if I recall and reset every 20 hours. I had it all copied and was gonna paste it here but it got removed since alpha is still under NDA.

Think I might have had one of those raid bosses spawn on us. Was some big titan thing that spawned on the final stage of a rift. Dude had like 100k+ hp and was hitting for a shit ton. Didn't seem like it fit very well, because it was from a minor earth rift.
Isn't it ironic and selfish to say that God made man in his image, when God was made in man's image?

Keeblur that's not what he's referring to. He's talking about Ancient Wardstones. They were just implemented into Alpha, so they're not on the beta servers yet. The guild I'm in has about 25 Alpha keys now, we just got them this weekend so racing to 50 to test this 20 man content out.

The amount of content that the Rift team is pumping out daily is mind blowing, it honestly is like a different game from one week to the next.

I would suggest you stop violating the alpha NDA, it is a legal contract.

They test random raid bosses by simply spawning them from invasions during beta. That must have been the 100k boss you witnessed.

The NDA was lifted in december, but do continue douching it up.

I played as much as I could of beta 5. It was during the week so school/work took up a lot of my time. Thankfully, they extended it by a day which was very nice. I'm mostly going to talk about PvP here and my experiences with it.

First and foremost, whoever wants to be serious at PvP should not even consider playing Defiant. As you might assume, most idiots and children like to play the typical "bad guy" roles because it's "cool". Now that might be hypocritical calling other other people idiots while I played the same faction, but I can't stand religious zealots in real life and sure as hell didn't want to play as one, so I rolled Defiant.

When I got to 30 and started playing the Codex a lot, I quickly noticed that my theory was in fact real. Even when we outnumbered the Guardians by 1 or 2 people, I was still outnumbered in nearly every fight I took part in. Why? Because I'm fighting at the flags, the Guardian team is fighting at the flags and the rest of my team is dicking around in the middle or have 5 people chasing down a tank. In the 10 or so Codex matches I played, I won the first 2 and proceeded to lose the rest in very one sided matches. It was very frustrating, but the frustration was compounded even more by the awful balance in PvP.

Right now, if you want to be effective in PvP, you have 2 choices. Heavy ranged DPS - Marksman or Pyro or Healer - Paladin, Bard or some Cleric souls. If you picked something else, don't even bother. I played a DPS Cleric so you can dismiss this as QQ if you want, but I spent a good chunk of time in all types of PvP: duels, warfront and world, and this is what I found to be true.

Ranged DPS deals too much damage with too much safety which is the major problem here. I have no problem with melee rogues doing tons of damage because they have to put themselves in a more vulnerable position by getting close to the target. Ranged rogues are not only ranged (duh) but possess a knockback shot and a 10 second 50% speedboost that makes them unaffected by slows. This is too much. In a 1v1 scenario they are somewhat manageable but in groups that you'll find in warfront or world PvP, you can't do anything as a melee character as the rogue will just sit behind his team and you can either die to his (already high) DPS or charge into his team, hit him twice and die to the other 5 people.

I'm not sure how much gear was a factor in this. I was decently geared given the amount of time I played. From what I remember I had 2200 health, 20% crit chance and some amount of attack power that increased my physical damage by 40 DPS. My gear was half blues and half greens but I had enchantments on every single piece of gear possible. I don't know, maybe these are poor stats for a 30 Shaman/Druid, but all I know is that my max crit was around 300 while Marksmen were routinely critting me for over 750 and a Saboteur once hit me for 1200. If they had lower health I'd understand that they traded survivability for damage which would make it a little more tolerable, but 90% of the ones I faced had over 2k health anyways.

The second major problems is how healers go from 1 to 100 in the matter of 2-3 no cast time/low cooldown abilities. Bards are the biggest offenders here as they can be paired with the aforementioned Marksman and Saboteur souls to still deal plenty of damage while healing any that they take. I fought 3 Bards in random 1v1s around Scarlet Gorge and Gloamwood. 2 were lower level. It always ended the same: I whack them for a bit, take them down to 50%, they cast 2 spells and are back at 100% while slowly but surely killing me. It takes forever and it's not fun because after the first 5 seconds of combat I can see that his heals > my damage and his damage > my heals (faerie blows). Yet it takes over a minute of frustrating gameplay, me hoping to get 5 crits in a row and burst him down, before he finally kills me.

Cleric healers are no different. I fought a Warden who killed me by just spamming waterjet and keeping a few HoTs on him the whole time. His lifebar never went below 75%. But at least with Clerics you realize that they play this way probably because they are smarter than me and switched off a DPS spec as fast as possible. I guess it's my fault for picking the "wrong" souls.

What this boils down to is not even bad balance, but boring gameplay. Every warfront and every big world PvP war boiled down to Ranged DPS shooting each other while healers stayed behind them and healed. It's the most boring thing I've ever seen. I'm not just complaining because my class is weak, I'm complaining because this is bad for the game. People will quickly get bored of this ranged DPS/healer spamfest and quit playing. I really want to enjoy Rift as I think the world events are really fun and the fully customizable classes were a neat touch, but trying as hard as I can I can't find a reason to keep playing if PvP remains like this.

The BETA NDA was lifted in december, the alpha NDA is still in effect, and don't say no because it is still in effect.

I was in the beta ( i believe beta 5, It ended tonight) it's truely a amazing game with a lot of interesting mechanics. Sadly its quite the ripoff from wow. Almost everything is somting WoW has too. I didn't notice too much features from Guild Wars.

Anyways, I was thinking of preordering it but im not a fan of Monthly fee's. I heard its 6 a month if you preorder instead of 9 tough. So that can be quite the money saver. (Not certain).

Havent got to try PvP yet. but PvE untill level 15 was quite a blast ;D.

The PvP concerns voiced by sleeepy are very legitimate. Ranged DPS basically dominates PvP at this stage of the game. Melee DPS is very disadvantaged, whether it be because inability to close ground or otherwise. Because of the lack of public knowledge of the game post level 30, it's tough to say whether or not these are going to be long lasting concerns.

If you have beta forum access, I recommend checking out the PvP forums, as there is some decent info there.

dont forget its the most common thing in the world for kiting classes to excel in lower levels until the melee classes get more damage/control skills and damage starts to scale differently at endgame.

i remember reading aion forums, where it was said that warriors couldnt ever win pk until they hit level max, at which point they got attkspeed+ scaling and suddenly started to rape

Jumped in on beta 5 for this game and had a good time. As an ex-WoW player, I noticed that a lot of the UI and basic game flow felt pretty familiar. Talent Trees->Souls, BGs->Warfronts, PvE Instances->PvE Instances. There are backpacks, banks, drinks, auctioneers in 3s, basic stats, combat stats like spell power and attack power, green/blue/purple gear, and so on.

I think the soul trees will make or break this game. My brief experience with them felt kind of like playing with cheat codes enabled, at least compared to WoW's talents. There were stackable damage amplification options left and right, some quite a bit more powerful than others. Admittedly, I picked Stormcaller+Elementalist, which is designed around alternating Air and Water spells which boost each other, so maybe it was supposed to feel like that. Still, 20% here, 60% there, 10% there, 9%, then throw in crits, find another 20%, then get some gear... http://www.riftrolebuilder.com/builder/?calling=mage if you're curious.

The fun part about souls is it gives the opportunity to create all sorts of characters, but it remains to be seen how many viable options there'll be for max level content. If they do the math right and swing the nerf bat with skill and precision, the game will be awesome. If not, you'll zone in to Warfronts or try to hit up your quest NPC and die to 8 identically-souled(specced) instant-casting, auto-critting, temporarily-immune-to-your-shit goons. With PvE they can at least loosen the tuning on encounters to let unoptimized toons succeed, but since there's a healthy amount of PvP planned I think they'll need to keep an eye on what folks are up to.

I was very impressed by the way the beta was run. Initial install, patching, login, notifications about downtime all went smoothly. I like their line on UI mods: "not til we can do it right." It sounds like they understand the potential pitfalls and are committed to releasing a quality product. Looking forward to the next phase for sure.

Just read an article about the game from last year where they devs jokingly said that Rift's going to be the first MMO developed under (? by? according to? no idea!) "german efficiency"...

It definately would be quite refreshing to see a game of this scale launching and going on properly once in a while :D
