What's the best way to play coop through normal PvE with a friend of a different race? So far I've had to go to the Mists -> Lion's Arch -> his starting zone -> run through so much shit just to meet up with my friend's character. And then since the main quests are your personal story, I don't get any exp or rewards at all so we have to alternate between them while essentially only a single character levels.

Going through zones and exploring is annoying too because if you get separated there's no actual way to quick-travel near your party leader.

Blahblahblah that's to stop botters and being able to run people to higher level zones but at some point you're frustrating the average player so much it's not even worth it.

Actually it's pretty easy in my opinion. Because of the way the level scaling works in this game the biggest hurdle to co-op PvE (level differences) is mitigated. Exploring and completing the areas together is pretty much the only activity PvE-wise, but that's basically half of Guild Wars 2 so you should be able to find something to enjoy together. There is no area in the game limiting you because of your race except for the main quest. I've made characters of pretty much all the races and I always go the Queensdale route.

Even if you are overleveled for an area you will still get decent experience and loot (one of the most popular farming spots for any level character was a level 1-15 area the last time I played), so just pick an area where both of you meet the basic level requirement and get to it!

If you don't mind the occasional PvP, there is some exploring to do in WvWvW, with various events pretty much all over the place. It makes it more exciting too when you find some enemy players off the beaten paths. It can be difficult though if you are way underleveled.

Me and some friends went around doing all the jumping puzzles and 'hidden' quests and completing whatever we could find on the way when last time I was leveling, it was pretty fun

I actually do enjoy the platforming in this game for some reason back when I was solo'ing. The 2013 Halloween tower one was pretty fun.

And I'm more talking about the sort of overarching plot that drives you through the zones. Otherwise it's pretty mindless just going from one zone to the next without any thread connecting what's going on. The first dungeon isn't for a while as well (which is like the first mission that requires any sort of coordination or skill to complete) so that's a little annoying as well.

Well Guild Wars 2 has problems in the plot department. I've not finished the main quest yet so I can't speak about that, but the plot in the areas is very thin. I'm personally fine with that because that's not what I'm looking for but if you're looking to experience a story with your friend, dungeons is the only thing I can think of that can possibly deliver and even that is a stretch in GW2.

The only time I've ever been interested in anything happening storywise in Guild Wars 2 was when Lion's Arch burned (spoiler alert!) and even that wasn't very well executed. It was interesting for 10 minutes and after that it was a grind until the next phase of the event kicked in.

Leveling a character is a very boring and annoying thing to do in GW2, specialy if you come from GW1. The first character is ok, but every next is just a pain. One of the best ways (and most boring) is probably to join a train farm group - mad king's labirynth was a good place with scaling you up. At least now you get exp tomes as rewards for doing some daily quests.
For coop I'd suggest you just explore the zones together, probably more fun than doing story (aside some dungeons).

I didn't find it too hard to level to 80...you get a lot of experience for just getting waypoints/vista/point of interests, let alone doing the heart quest things too.

Or you can just craft a lot of levels :D

After dropping the game few weeks after launch, can someone give me brief notes on what has changed so far? Might pick up GW2 again with the expansion, primarily looking for a good pvp experience or something that's like GW1 which I'm in love with.

Well they are actually adding GvG, so I'm looking forward to that and hoping it's good.

so after getting to lvl 80 (mostly by exploring the map to about 80%) I did not manage the jump to the end-game stuff. For the past month I've just been logging in daily once for a minute to get the daily reward, nothing more. The boss battles are very repetitive AND real-time-demanding (bound to real time spawns), which I heavily dislike (I want to play the game on my time, not get dictated when to play it), running in a mob in the lvl 80 area or WvW is not that exciting either. Dungeon farming? It is mostly just rushing through and I might as well work in real life instead. PvP? I did not really enjoy it either, way too much stress and too little control over my own character.

Maybe it is because I am playing as an engineer, maybe half the game at that point should be playing with friends (of which I have few since the ones I played with feel the same way and stopped playing).
Is it because I'm playing an engineer? Is it because I didn't even bother to upgrade to temple armor and run around with a mystic weapon only?
What keeps YOU excited to still play the game after exploring most of the world once, doing all the tedious heart quests, finishing all the fun jumping puzzles multiple times (besides WvW and PvP)?
Life is not fair. But that's what chocolate is for.

I too tried the PvP and quit very early after being pretty frustrated with it. Upon starting to play again though and actually putting some time in to understand wtf is going on I'm enjoying it a lot more.

It's ironic I played Guild Wars 1 and all the expansions and waited for GW2 with gusto yet I have never played it. Ever. Weird.

Even if they add GvG (which is in fact more like DotA from what they said) your PvP experience will be nothing like GW. The reason for that is easy: The combat/skill system. Those systems (movement, skill interaction, situational skill usage etc.) made GW unique. GW2 doesn't have that. The game mode doesn't matter, the fighting will still be the same as it is in Capture the Points right now.
I mean, look at the player-invented GvG in GW2. It's certainly better than Capture the Point and can be fun for sure but it is still a huge mess compared to GW1's GvG or PvP in general. If you are looking for something akin to GW combat in GW2 you will never be able to find it.

Having played GW1, all his expansions and then hopped into hardcore GvG (loved that so much), I quit the 2 one week after maxing out

Haha, reading his message, I was like "Oh, it might be time to get back to it", but you killed any hope I had

I want GW's true GvG back (with a no-nonsense Victory Or Death though...)

Still no arena mode, right?
I think the dodging mechanic is also counter-intuitive.

Same for me. I was really into PvP in GW1, bu after learning about PvP in GW2 I have never picked it up. I have so so many good memories of PvP in GW1. Was fun time. :D

GW2 is a game that got many, many things right. I played it intensely for about two months, then got burned out and bored.

To me, its biggest flaw is the combat system. It's just so... cluttery and messy. Yeah, it makes for a lot of action and movement, and it looks reactionary, but really it's only a huge cluster of skills and attacks without much coherence to them. Shame, too, because I would have sticked to that game for a very long time, had it had decent combat mechanics.

I'll most likely buy Heart of Thorns though. Just because I liked GW2 and got my money's worth out of it.

If you're a hardcore PvP'er, GW2 simply isn't for you. But if you want an epic adventure that can be even played solo it's the best there is. Stuff like Skyrim or Dragon Age don't even come close to it. Visuals and exploration are also astounding.
Time is precious. Waste it wisely.

I admit that the GW2 world, as an exploration, is pretty spectacular.

Sadly, this is proving to remain entirely true for some reason.
