This is cRAzi: On top of Natural Selection's alpha release (Starcraft in FPS form) on July 26th, BlackCatGames, working from within VALVe, is bringing their reinvented "Alien Swarm" to steam, for FREE.
This is sick siCK SICK. Alien Swarm was a coop mod from 2004. Back then there were no cool coop games, much less good ones. The original was IMO better than Left4Dead, more intense, more cooperative options, all that good sh**t. I've been waiting for their for-money indie debut since then, but I guess the team got hired by Valve 2 years ago.
Anyway it's free, the original kicked copious amount of azz, and it'll be downloadable in 3 days. NS2 on 26th, SC2 on 27th, too much good stuff in the next 2 weeks xO

That game looks like a lot of fun. I am going to agree with you on the " better than L4D " part, it looks like more fun. Left 4 Dead didn't expand in the second, they made a few adjustments, but overall it was nothing.

Original Alien Swarm Video
The original was what "alien" would be in game form. There was wielding doors shut, there was setting mines for trap, there was marine being infested by chest-busters, 360 degree radar, hacking computers, big chain guns, alien surround like zerglings, it even had cooperative bullettime for when it got too intense.
If this thing plays like the original, it'll beat out the $60 games out there.

I'm pretty damn excited to play this. I almost bought alien breed:impact, but now this is coming out for free with Co-op?! Sign me up Valve!

Alien Swarm always looked cool but I never bought UT2k4 even though I liked the mp demo.

No news forever and now finally a gigantic announcement. Alien swarm was great but very challenging.

I absolutely hated the regular NS mod for HL. It had great graphics (back then) and the concept was nice, but I thought the maps as well as some gameplay aspects were whack.

First of all, NS was amazing. Secondly, that is completely off-topic as the games aren't even similar.

Alien Swarm Infested is going to be available for FREE?
Like, not just Alien Swarm the original, but the game they've been working on forever? Fuck yeah I'm pumped :D I'm definitely going to be playing this.
Alien Swarm is definitely one of my favorite games of all time.

The original campaigns for Alien Swarm were pretty good, but the fanmade ones just elevated this game so high... I forget which one it was where you had to trap those giant spider aliens in the constantly rotating research facility.... Escape From Rhea maybe? I remember being stuck on that mission for like 3 hours together with Malmis

Awesome, I had been on the fence about ns2 and had not heard that the alpha was so soon. Am now preordering.
And I always liked Alien swarm as like a SmashTV on crack and hadn't heard of this

I am sooooooo hyped for this game. The community mods are gonna be awesome.
I'm wondering what the catch is though - it's free. Maybe they're working on a similar or vastly upgraded edition they'll reveal in a few months? The only other catch I can see is that you have to get Steam to use it.
