This sort of thinking is something I have trouble understanding. The farming is the endgame (given that PVP is nowhere in sight). How is a slot machine competitive? Pulling the lever faster? Upon what are you setting your benchmark? Is it the Top-100 geared players? The record holders? IMO, if you're competing with anyone other than yourself in Diablo 3 you cease to be playing for fun and, more power to you, the game is probably not a good fit for you.
Call it a hunch, but I think pvp is right around the corner. With PoE hitting open beta very very soon, and then this massive bot ban wave that cleared out pratically the entire playerbase, it's safe to assume they're preparing for pvp.

I'm not excited for PVP, but I'm excited for the prospect that it can breathe some life back into the game, so let's hope you're right!

For anyone else bored of D3 and have some spare balance, you can sell some D3 pixels for Blizzard Balance and upgrade to MoP for 30 or SC2 to HotS for $40 without paying the 15% paypal fees or sales tax. Then again, MoP is still $20 from amazon; its more the principle of directly selling an item for a game.

I swear I'm not a Blizz employee. I'm just playing my 10day MoP trial and noticed the option. (can't level to 86 tho hehe)

Yeah I got that e-mail as well......I know this is off topic but like....they want you to get re-addicted to that heroine of a video game and all they are offering is 10 days?!?! Minimum a month.
Anyway, just wondering - Do you need an Authenticator just for BNET Balance from D3? If I could make a few $ enough to buy HoTS I would do that. Thanks.
|
Nope, only need an authenticator for paypal. You can keep a Blizz Balance without even a valid credit card associated.
I'm not that impressed by MoP. I'm asian and don't like the oriental theme in my WoW universe. Mostly I just felt like seeing if the talent system seemed as lame as Beta, and solo some TK again for kicks.

I refunded D3 like a day after it came out. Hoping they put a christmas sale on it like they will with WoW and SC2

As far as I remember, one dude of elitistjerks did some nice data collection on this a few years ago for WoW, and they noticed a huge variance and standard deviation from the expected values of drops after a certain number of tries, e.g. a lot people would literally go dozens of runs without finding something that supposedly had a 1x% drop chance while a lot of other people would get those items dozens of times in a row, thus evening out the EVs in the distribution but making it feel like a roaler coaster for individual persons.
Back then it seemed like the distribution their RNG was simulating wasn't evenly distributed for all users smoothly, instead there were a lot of spikes. I have no idea if they have an RNG engineer over at Blizzard or something, but I don't think it's completely unlikely that they just used old WoW server RNG code because they deemed it working (don't fix what's not broken), so it might still have the same spikes. This would explain 13+ 50% runs (that's less than a 0.0002% chance) that a lot of people seem to be experiencing.
I'm not sure why you think people write their own rng code, we all use common libraries... granted I don't work for a huge company (nor ever have), but I've never even heard of something called a RNG engineer.
The only thing I've seen Blizzard do to 'control range' is the concept of super high proc-rate + internal cooldown; like on the hellfire ring or shenlong fists or WoW trinkets.
And the reason why people hit these spikes? It's not that hard to understand; I've made 2 rings; it took me roughly 12 uber fights to get the parts (MP4 - 6 runs) and around 100 key runs to get the keys.
People who've made dozens of rings have literally done thousands of key runs. It starts to be more likely that there'll be a dry spell, and you are going to notice it.
If you prefer math, plug in some numbers following this: http://mathworld.wolfram.com/Run.html I'm not that good at math, but some people on wikipedia were messing around and it looks like 1000 trials gives average streaks of 7-13 depending on whose math you trust (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Reference_desk/Archives/Mathematics/2012_September_25).
Without reading that EJ post; I can't say for sure but I'm pretty confident that you can't calculate range the way you're describing too.

so, im guessing botters are not fazed by blizzard's recent ban. after the ban i put all my +gf / +mf gear on AH. a ring i bought for my merc for around 50k has a bid of around 500,000 right now with a couple hours left to go.
if you have +gf gear, put it up. its at a premium now.

As far as i know people who bought a hard copy don't require an authenticator, however people who purchased D3 online need an authenticator to use BNet balance.
As of right now i can't put items up for auction on the RMAH.

Lol what?! I´ve made 23 rings now and i don´t think i´ve done far more than 50 triple-runs. Most of the runs were MP6-7.
Edit: Oh, keyruns, but still, that´s far exaggerated imo. If i would have to guess i´d say i´ve done like 150 keyruns, not including alkaizer MP1 runs.

Your own numbers don't add up.
50 uber runs = 150 machines. Unless you mean everyone in the party brings their own machine; in which case it's 50 machines for you -> 150 keys still.
We do these things so often we forget just *how* often.
Anyways, you're doing these on a higher MP than I was assuming in my post (my experience is mp4-5, the guy talking about bad luck is MP5 as well); so your numbers will vary. A huge factor too is who exactly is supplying the machines; I tend to bring my own since my friends stopped playing; but if you have a group then obviously you'll spend much less time key farming.

Botters have little to do with the gold price. Yes, item-inflation might be botters fault, but the price went from 0,28€ after 1 smaller and 1 bigger banwave towards 0,25€ ... someone is either duping tons of gold or something very fishy is going on. Chinese 24/7 bots are still running without an issue.

1.06 changed everything. EVERYTHING. You should read the notes.
As for people making money, I'm sure there are, but clearly trending down until PvP hits.
