Square Enix might have just dropped a fairly substantial hint on the release window of Final Fantasy XV. It’s hidden in an extra-long survey, coming with a whopping fifty questions to Japanese fans, basically stopping just short of asking for their three sizes and sleeping habits. Actually, scratch that. There’s a question that gets very close to asking about their sleeping habits. Here’s a question for those considering to purchase both Persona 5 and Final Fantasy XV: If both titles were released at roughly the same time, which one would you prioritize (buying)?

Final Fantasy director’s haven’t shied away from comparing their projects to popular western games of the now. In the past we’ve seen games like Final Fantasy XIII compared to Call of Duty, XIII-2 to Mass Effect and Red Dead Redemption and Lightning Returns to Skyrim. Now it seems to be Final Fantasy XV’s turn, which director Hajime Tabata describes as having been influenced by narrative-heavy titles such as The Last of Us. Speaking with Examiner Tabata explained, “One of the important threads of the story in Final Fantasy XV is that tale of how Noctis goes from being a young prince in waiting to becoming the king of the country. That tale is a really big part of the game.” The story of Final Fantasy XV will focus on Noctis and his “deep personal journey.” Tabata says he will “grow and develop as a person, which puts you in a place to experience that emotional journey with him.” According to Tabata, the direction of the game’s narrative and character development are connected and the team is aiming for something where gameplay and storytelling are one in the same. To this end, games such as The Last of Us were looked to as an example of that concept. “It’s important that the story progresses through the gameplay in a very unforced way, in a similar way that it was done with The Last of Us, for example.” Final Fantasy XV goes without a release date, but with an announcement expected in March the game is still set for 2016. I have no idea what XIII-2 has to do with Mass Effect / Red Dead Redemption and I have no idea what Lightning Returns has to do with Skyrim. I love Japan but they are so disconnected to the west at times it is funny ![]()

Skyrim = free roam RPG = Lightning Returns. SquareEnix continues to live in their insular little Japanese bubble.

Early demo footage and gameplay of the Final Fantasy XV demo gave players a bit of insight into what the game will look and feel like come 2016. The boy's road trip feel and refinements to battle, visuals, and the whole spectrum seem fitting for a brand new entry with its own unique take on the Final Fantasy formula. Speaking exclusively with Examiner, Game Director on Final Fantasy XV, Hajime Tabata explained what kinds of magic await players, as well as what roles women will play in the main narrative. When asked what kinds of magic we can expect in the highly anticipated and magic-centric game, Tabata explained we’ll see two types of magic. “The first is a very generic magic system that is used by people around the world,” said Tabata, “The second one is a very specific discipline of magic, which is only allowed to be used by people within the Royal family itself.” Tabata didn’t go into much detail on how the second type will affect the boys on their road trip and the story throughout. There was no mention of how the two types of magic might portray a sort of class struggle in the world of Final Fantasy XV, but we’re hoping that these systems play out in some truly interesting ways not just for combat, but storytelling as well. I guess the high school vibe is the reason for Square's questions regarding FFXV and Persona 5.

Final Fantasy XV is currently set for a release in 2016 and in a recent Q/A that was held by the developers, they have shared some interesting new information for the game including the size of the cities and difficulty curve of the game. Q: HOW MUCH OF THE BIG CITIES LIKE ALTISSIA/INSOMNIA WILL WE BE ABLE TO EXPLORE? A: I can tell everyone a little about Altissia at this time. Altissia has many and varied locations, such as multiple cafes, ship-bourne market places and parks etc. The city is of a considerable scale, to the extent that even the developers sometimes get lost there! The player is free to take a leisurely walk around the complex maze of streets, or ride the gondola to see the sights and there is also added enjoyment to be had looking for restaurants to visit! You are bound to encounter some unique characters when exploring the city streets. So we have created lots of different things to enjoy in Altissia and hope everyone is looking forward to visiting! Q: HOW WILL THE DIFFICULTY MODES COMPARE IN TERMS OF XP GAIN, ENEMY STATS, DAMAGE AND A.I? A: The equivalent to difficulty level settings in FFXV is a system where you can switch between different battle modes. By having this ability to switch modes, we want to make it so that both players who like action oriented, technical gameplay and also those who want to fight at a slower, more relaxed pace can all enjoy the combat in their own style. This switching system is a key part of the gameplay that we decided to introduce based on the feedback we received from the Episode Duscae demo. We will go into more detail about the system closer to the game’s launch so stay tuned for more information. Q: WILL LARGE BUILDINGS HAVE MULTIPLE WARP POINTS TO ALLOW NOCTIS TO SCALE AND EXPLORE ROOFTOPS? A: Why of course they will! The warp ability that lets you teleport instantly to high up locations is a vital part of FFXV’s battle system. The ability to use multiple warp points in a strategic manner is especially prevalent in the game’s large scale battles over urban terrain. It is not just the buildings though, and we have also created exciting aerial battles with flying foes and gigantic boss enemies, so watch out for those. Source

Final Fantasy XV director Hajime Tabata has talked about magic in the upcoming game on several occasions, but we finally got a glimpse of how it looks in this week’s issue of Jump magazine. The magazine scan above shows an image of Noctis casting “Fire” in a fight against a Magitek Armor enemy. It also mentions that using Fire on grassy plains will instantly cause the flames to spread around, and going overboard with it could make the party members feel daunted. We’ll likely get a closer look and more details on how it works in the next Active Time Report, which is expected to be sometime at the end of the month. Source

Final Fantasy XV director Hajime Tabata hopes that the game's ending leaves you in tears. He tells Game Informer that players who invest so many hours into a game deserve a strong ending. "I want to create a very emotional ending to the game and want to make as many people cry as possible," he said. "You're spending so many hours playing the game, so when I finish a game and it ends on a sour note and it doesn't move me, it gets me disappointed. At least make me cry or give me some emotion! I want to give a moving ending for the consumers who invest so much time." Another goal that Tabata has for Final Fantasy XV is for it to make a similar impact on the gaming industry that revered entry Final Fantasy VII did back in the late '90s. "There are some team members that were here for VII," he explained. "They're taking on the challenge of trying to exceed that title once more, which is a great motivator for them. VII sets a very high goal for us, but it serves as a good goal. It brought in new audiences, sales, and more." Source

I remember when I was watching some panels on Portal 2, they would playtest every scene, every joke, and rewrite everything and stuff, I would love to see some franchises that have been struggling with story in the recent years to incorporate that. If time and money is not an issue, I think I would like to see more games done this way. Although that might be way different in a 20-50 hour story based game like FFXV.
