RoA/Rylai/GA You get a million billion AP from your Q anyway so you can just get some survivability instead. Add in a void staff when needed and a Zhonya later and you're good to go. You can kite and chase pretty effectively with Rylai/Q. You don't need to instagib people, you can instead hit with Q twice. You can get Deathfire as well if you like to, it doesn't help with your problem of being squishy, though. | ||

That solves the problem...somewhat, without leaving you stuck with a crappy item. For veigar, I think glacial shroud is his ideal first item. 20% cdr: obviously nice for Q farming. armor, obviously nice considering he's significantly less worried about magic damage than physical. The mana seals the deal because with a large mana pool, his mana regen breaks even with Q spaming earlier (he has a built-in chalice), meaning he can spam Q all he wants and still have mana leftover for emergency stun. | ||

I dont think he really need to sustain his spells later in the game after his sunfire cape. It's his early game that needs help where he basically uses up a bunch of mana to farm creeps and jungle. Getting mana and HP back on levelup basically keeps him out in the field much longer. | ||

Chalice gives you 30 MR and 7.5 base MP5 for 890 gold - 30 MR at Negatron's efficiency is 462.5 gold and 7.5 MP5 at Meki's efficiency is 417.8g. Basically, you're paying 10g for the passive of Chalice, which is an absolute steal if you're buying it for both of the stats on it. If you need Mana/Regen and you're not either rushing RoA or building an Archangel's, I think Chalice is actually a really strong item with how many caster comps are around nowadays. | ||
