Fire/Flying is not a curse. Charizard has 5 resistances and 1 immunity (resists Fighting and immune to Ground); pure Fire type has 5 resistances and no immunities (resists Ice). In my opinion, immunities are far more useful then resistances. An immunity, especially an immunity to a common type such as Ground, attacks Charizard to be switched in more easily (you just need to anticipate a Ground-attack then switch Charizard in - Charizard will not be hurt due to immunity). The only thing that is bad for Charizard is his 4x weakness to Rock. If you have competitive battling in mind, then this is deadly because 4x weakness to Rock implies 50% HP loss from Stealth Rock when switching in. On the other hand Charizard is immune to all other entry hazards because it's part flying.
Overall I think it's a fair trade-off.
If only Moltres didn't outclass Charizard in every way... minus maybe belly drum.
Which your Charizard the first play through wouldn't have.
So....... ?? :D ??

O yes, Moltres....But you don't get to catch Moltres in most games until very late; by the time you can meet it, you probably already have a solid team.
I guess I am biased. When I play against the environment I never use legendaries.
+ Show Spoiler +Well, except that I use Lugia as a TM slave.

near the end of the trailer... you can steal other people's pokemon now?
|
I think it was a trade actually or because that HUMAN sprite turned into a pokemon a kidnapping?
|
They need to use the original 3 starter Pokemon instead of this new shit.

o The Grass Starter, Tsutaja (ツタージャ) is the Grass Snake Pokémon o The Fire Starter, Pokabu (ポカブ)is the Fire Pig Pokémon o The Water Starter, Mijumaru (ミジュマル) is the Sea Otter Pokémon
A snake with arms. Fire pig looks kind of like spoink? (psychic pig) because of the tail. Buizel?
The starters aren't very innovative, Platinum may be my last pokemon.

First impressions:
- Jaroda (Grass starter) has weak ATK and S.ATK, this is disappointing considering I found Jaroda the most attractive looking starter.
- Emboar (Fire starter) is probably the best for beating the game. His ATK and HP dwarf the other two starters. The fire + fight type is a good combination as it covers a lot of resistances and doesn't leave open any deadly X4 modifiers.
- Gigaiasu is certainly a physical tank. If only his special defense was a tad higher I think he'd see some competitive use. Don't ever expect him to attack first with base speed 25. However, but the purposes of beating the game this guy seems very valuable as a tank because the AI isn't smart enough to switch and sweep on you.
- Warubiaru could be a decent physical sweeper option with his decently high attack and speed. There's definitely better physical sweepers in previous generations (Hello, Scizor and Salamence!) but you have to work with what's available.
- Hihidaruma another physical sweeper option with the interesting fire type. I actually like Hihidaruma as a possible team opener due to the metagame in Platinum, but of course that'll probably all change with the new pokemon being released. (Most people opened with a steel type, any fire opener countered that)
- - Desukan is a very interesting tank. He's ghost type, and there hasn't really been any ghost tanks yet. He has very high physical defense and somewhat high special defense - and of course being ghost type means he's defensive against many types of attacks.
- Aakeosu is perhaps the single best non-legendary new Pokemon in the fifth generation. He's fast and has a ridiculously high ATK as well as a pretty nice S.ATK which makes him incredibly versatile to anything your opponent brings in. Rock and flying type is a VERY good combo, a lot of their weaknesses cancel each other out. EV train this Pokemon for speed and ATK. His defenses aren't great, but is there a sweeper whose are?
- Zoroark has the same type of stat build as Aakeosu, but to a lesser extent. Would do absolutely fine as your main sweeper if you're not playing competitively. As a competitive battler, if you're dying for a dark type on your team to take out ghosts, Zoroark fits that mold.
- Shubarugo could be alright, really depends on what moveset he ends up with. Has over 100 DEF and S.DEF as well as a high attack stat. Very slow speed though.
- Mamanbou will have very high HP. Outside of that, pretty useless. Use Mamanbou if you like HP. I wouldn't recommend this pokemon though, it's defenses are too low to be a tank.
- Nattorei is a solid tank type. decent HP, very high DEF and pretty high SDEF. Has enough ATK to actually fight back too. Would make a good tank for someone's team.
- Shanderaa has very high S.ATK. Would make a good sweeper if it had just a bit higher speed. Ghost/fire combo is interesting, though.
- Ononokusu is a great physical sweeper. Super high ATK and good speed. Pretty low defenses for a dragon type though. though, it looks awesome. :3
- Agirudaa is super fast, one of the fastest out of any generation. Could be a good opener for a baton pass team, but he also has passable S.ATK. Depending on his moveset you could really take advantage of those two stats.
- Kojondo is another physical sweeper option, though not as good as some of the others I've already spoken of. Also just way too feeble in defense to take any kind of hit.
- Sazando very good dual sweeper with ATK, S.ATK and SPD. Also has surprisingly high defenses for being a dual sweeper. Probably the most well-rounded Pokemon, I would highly suggest using Sazando.
-Urugamosu is a solid S.ATK sweeper. There's been a lack of S.ATK sweepers in generation 5 so far, and Urugamosu is by no means amazing at it, but passable.
The rest are legendaries I do believe. That doesn't mean that they'll all be prohibited from competitive battling though. many legendaries are indeed tournament legal. Any pokemon I did not mention seemed pretty marginal to me, wouldn't be of much use in competition.

Zoroak is also supposed to learn "illusion" which may be competitive, if it's like an instantaneous transform that steals the opponent's stats.
I posted in this thread on page 5, and then again earlier on this page. I was really hoping for pokemon in a different genre.
I didn't like platinum too much. I played with the handicap of max base stat = 350 so that made it interesting for me, but I would've found the playthrough rather boring were it not for that.
edit: A lot of the things that people have already mentioned about platinum have really pissed me off. Hope Pokemon W/B fails and they go a new direction after this.

I actually think this is the best looking generation since Silver/Gold.
Not that such a thing is a great accomplishment.

Tho I don't agree with the example given I do agree with the statement.
I love all the new type combinations. Ice/Dragon Fire/Dragon Elec/Dragon Bug/Fire etc.
