Right now we have Apex/whatever Apex replacement pops up and EVO as the two supermajors. CEO became a supermajor this year. HTC event is at least a major+, if not a borderline supermajor (would be a supermajor for sure if DH London didn't conflict). TBH5 will almost certainly be a supermajor. DH Winter is shaping up to be a supermajor. MLG has potential to be one (and certainly used to be one). And it feels like we've already had 10+ majors in the course of a year, and it's only September! When we have so many competing organizations all striving to outdo each other, it's very exciting in the early days when we think "holy shit so much melee this is amazing," but can this last forever? Might it not be better for the number of premier tournaments to be limited so each feels more meaningful as they currently do as opposed to running the risk of becoming a haze of indistinguishable matches?

If the games are good i doubt that there will be a problem tbh.

I consider myself a pretty hardcore fan, and I watch the vast majority of every major/supermajor tournament, and a lot of smaller ones as time allows, and I've definitely noticed that Melee watching has been occupying more of my time over the past couple of years. Whereas previously I can expect to devote no more than ~10 weekends a year to catch every major/supermajor, now it feels like I have to tune in every week and spends hours every Saturday and Sunday lest I miss something. It's not necessarily a problem for people who like the game a lot, but how many people out there are willing to stay glued to their desks week in and week out for a "can't miss tourney" when there's one every other week at most? And from the players' perspective, at what point do you decide that the next "major" tourney that you "can't miss" can, actually, totally be missed, because there will be 2 more in the same month? I'm not really sure where i'm going with this since I'm not convinced myself that this is a bad thing, but I still feel like there might be unintended side effects of such rapid expansion. I really do think this was a major problem in SC2, but I lost interest in the scene so I'm not really sure how it was resolved there.

Apex EVO Smash Con TBH5 then the "majors" are: CEO Paragon LA maybe HTC? Liquipedia has a different definition, but even then it doesn't feel like an "over-saturation." There are, however, lots of really huge locals / regionals featuring top players that happen often (esp in SoCal), and if you try to follow all of those, it can indeed get pretty tiring.

Top Smash tournaments are Majors Top Liquipedia tournaments are Premier So LP and Smash in general kind of agree: TBH, Apex, EVO, CEO, big MLG (2014 Anaheim)

You already said that players will have to decide where they go and it probably will be decided by money. In the end i feel it will be resolved pretty naturally tbh and i wouldn't really compare the situation to sc2 tbh, sc2 on average has worse gameplay and a lot of casual viewers stopped watching it because of korean domination. As long as there are english speaking gods in melee i doubt more tournaments will lead to anything bad :D

A really good effect is the money raise, because earlier I guess it was kind of a concern for pros/semi pros if they should practice and attend alot of tournaments or get a job. Now(and in the future scenarios) the scene is probably better at sustaining the pros, who will probably be more concerned with the big majors, while the lesser majors could be like a place to for aspiring players and semi pros to get foothold e: tried to edit but somehow quoted, woops

Forcing players to go to local venues means that scenes grow locally, and are not necessarily competing with each other for viewership which leads to fan burnout. Think about how many football leagues exist. Each town has a team or more that belongs to this or that division, and each school also has at least one team. No-one talks about over-saturation of footie though, because not every tournament is trying to be the FIFA world cup of smash. There are streamed weekly tourneys for a particular city, or region. These weekly tournaments don't care as much about getting 10k+ viewers, or at least they would be horribly wrong to want that. And having the big division between the EU/US/JP scenes means that "world class" tournaments are around less often. A tournament is not legitimized unless there are multiple gods present, immediately tiering the type of content that viewers are getting. The problem with starcraft, is that everyone was trying to be what the WCS is now. Different formats were tried, but we had MLG Circuits, IPL team league and single tournaments, dreamhacks, and GSL inviting foreigners. Everyone was trying to be top dog, yet the tournament we appreciated the most was homestory cup, and now with mana doing well in the most recent WCS and a european in lilbow winning the whole thing, this WCS season was probably the most hyped of them all because of the localized crowd.

I'm NA, so I've never been to a dh before, and their various packages are a bit confusing I've been following the relevant admin tweets and posts in my local fb group, and it seems like we aren't supposed to get austin tickets yet (because melee competitor passes aren't out yet..?)

I know this is proly not the right forum for this question, but I thought here is the place with the most knowledge about hooking up old consoles with new TV´s :D So I got an N64 recently and tried hooking it up to my Sony Flatscreen via component and Scart. The Component should have worked according to some reviews of the TV done by Retrogamers. Both did´nt work though so I gave up. Yesterday I tried it again and suddenly I got a signal via Scart and could play normally (with an kinda ugly picture though^^). Today it does not work anymore again ![]() Any suggestions, or is it most likely a broken N64 causing the problem?
