You really shouldn't be surprised that the Starcraft 2 fans would act this way. This thread is only one small example of the general opinion of Brood War players and fans that Brood War is a better game than Starcraft 2, and by extension all Brood War players and fans are better than their Starcraft 2 equivalents. I suppose it could be said however, that this thread is the central focus of them based on the way it is constantly being brought up by both sides.

I, for one, have grown so tired of hearing about the "good old days" of Brood War that I cannot watch the Day9 Daily, I mute the commentary of the GSL, and I find it difficult to watch State of the Game.

No one denies that the level of play during the GSL open seasons was not what it is today, and I doubt anyone would even think to argue that the level of play will not continue to improve in the future. What Starcraft 2 fans, and I lump myself into the group at this point, are sick of is hearing that what they enjoy is not worth enjoying compared to what has happened in Brood War.

Would you like me to compare Fruit Dealer, NesTea, and MC to people like Freemura, Grrrr..., and H.O.T-Forever? It's easy for you to look back at those players and laugh about how terrible they were compared to Brood War players today, but I bet if you watched them play back then, or at least heard about them play back then, you were just as excited about them as we were about our first champions.

You, Brood War fans, opened this by becoming upset about our joy at a new found passion. I doubt any of us have talked poorly about your players, and many of us have actually gotten back into Brood War, or picked it up for the first time out of curiosity about the game that pioneered our newly acquired passion. The vast majority of Starcraft 2 fans have deep respect for the players and fans of Brood War, as well as for the game itself. We would appreciate it if you could show a little respect and encouragement to us, rather than shutting us down at every opportunity.

I apologize for any disrespect shown in the responses of the Starcraft 2 fans, and I assure you it is fleeting. We just sometimes need to let off some steam after all the tension that is built up from these occasions. So please, try not to be offended by our cries of passion and more than that, try not to trivialize them.

Good post but save your angst.

BW fans are depressed they are attached to a diminishing game and need to lash out to feel better about themselves.

Let them have their catharsis if it makes them feel any better.

BW fans are depressed because SC2 is a huge disappointment.

no substance, this is a clear troll. but when one argues for bw TL mods seems to ban sparingly.

They expected the players to be as polished as a Flash type player by the end of the first month. As the poster who summarized sc2 fans thoughts on the matter said, if you looked back on the level of play/how interesting BW was at the start and compared it to today you would be every bit as disappointed. If the people who are disappointed in the results watch matches like game 7 of DRG vs MMA at the last GSL then perhaps their opinions will change. The level of play today will pale in comparison to the level of play in 10 years if sc2 is still going strong then. We will look back at MVP and think he was so flawed etc. Heck him in a year would likely pound how he is now. BW fans need to learn to be less condescending, and just accept that SC2 is moving up and enjoy its succes, because as others have said, many people have gotten back into BW just because of SC2 and many have started watching it for the first time. I pay more attention to it now myself than I ever did before and that is simply because of SC2. Stop arguing about which game is better and simply enjoy the positives of both -_-

I'm holding onto hope that HotS adds the defensive advantage and area control that SC2 is lacking in the extreme, which should open up a whole new slew of strats and make the game a lot more interesting as a whole.

I would say I'm disappointed in SC2 on a couple different levels. Primarily it is not nearly as interesting to watch, but this may change as the next 2 expansions come out and the game gets more refined. Second, simply playing on the ladder is a game of "spot the bullshit" where cheese/all-ins are by far and extreme the preferred strats, simply because they are easy wins 50%+ of the time. I'll be blunt, that isn't fun.

Overall I want less death balls, less all-ins, more harass, more macro games. All of which the new units in HotS MIGHT be able to achieve if they are balanced right.

On the topic of the BW pros transferring over, I get the feeling that a good amount of them are practicing up, as to be familiar enough with the game that they are on the same level with the other SC2 pros once HotS comes out, so they aren't left behind with that boom.
Once the A-teamers do come over I think the OP overstates the effects, but not by a significant amount, not because these players are innately better, but because of the training mindset they've had for the past ~5 years.

Definitely far from it, from what I can tell. But every community has their sub-community of loyalists. I mean, a lot of people still maintain that SC:BW took out a lot of the skills that went into WC2 and did not want to play a lesser game. And they play WC2 to this day :p

All right. BW fans were really hyped about sc2 when it got announced. Many of them were disappointed.

Nha, how can you be disappointed when your favorite game is revamped and after 1 year is already 600% better than on release. They must have been really naive and unrealistic. Or they were not interested in sc2 at all.

I am not going to say the game itself, scII, will be better in 5 years. But the community will be bigger and better, will take a couple years to root out the new guys, and for some fans to grow up.
I think that also the players, the ones that were good but couldnt live on it 5y ago, have it better nowadays with sc2.
Team Liquid has it better with sc2. Esport companies will have a better revenue

Nha, saying that the total packet of SCII failed is just plain retarded. Really dumb thing to say.
Look at how many people are having fun, how many money is being made, how Esports is getting more attention.

Come on.
I had a good night of sleep.

Damn I don't see how ForGG lost he played BW at the top level is he so much better than all the players in SC2 by far like all the BW players that are switching soon. Players like leenock are such a joke even though he 2-0'd ForGG even if he played well. ForGG winning code A pretty much proves that SC2 competition pathetic which justifies this QQ thread.

Why isn't this closed yet? This thread is awful and people are just getting angry at each other and making idiotic arguments why one game is better than the other. If you like this game talk about it and if you don't why don't you stfu and let others have fun? You bashing people screaming BW IS SO MUCH BETTER isn't going to change anything except people will troll you. Sorry.
Try another route paperboy.

favorite nitpicky quote in last few pages: "Intrigue is not, at least entirely correct"

notes:
- forgg was approximately MVP-level in bw. quite good, but there are better. i expect a similar level of performance, probably a bit better.
- losing to leenock isn't bad at all. i wish sc2 players had some metric to understand what a monumental feat reaching iccup A during korean hours at age 13 is. i could try to explain but i don't really feel like it. takeaway point: the kid is good. i mean yeah he was past gsl finalist.
- you do not understand starcraft at all if you think "dominating" means never dropping games. MC obviously stepped up his game today by taking out leenock too despite my low opinion of him. good for him! it would be too boring if he faded to mediocrity as quickly as i expected.

ultimately, it doesn't even matter at all what happens from this point on - the skill level of the scene has already increased so massively since this article that i already feel completely vindicated. if you don't think the games 1 year ago were, well... (you know the f word) then i don't know what to say to you! people don't even mention foreigners anymore in this article haha, that's how much things have changed! have a great day citizens

But like...what you seemed to be saying in the original post was that the competition in SC2 was bad because no really good players had switched, and all competition was almost pointless (or a farce) until the really good players are playing it.

But the level of play has increased significantly without an influx of BW pros.

EDIT: Basically, in what way is the OP of this thread vindicated?

A large portion were going to be disapointed by any result. It happens all the time with sequals of huge games that there is a section of people who even if they made the game better in every way will refuse to say that the new game is better.

SC2 isn't better than BW, but its the second best thing and at least it has a future.

That's why people play it.

They were bad. (P)MC, the fearsome God of War "Kratoss", was instead known as “Flounder” and the “Suicide Toss”

That is President Toss to you, sir.

BW fans were really hyped about sc2 when it got announced. They were disappointed by the result though

Who said that? ._. Tongue in cheek. If anything I have problems with the game design more than anything. Vanilla SC had many flaws too. BW added a ton to change that.

I'd say that BW is better in balance and also in gameplay stuffs but it's let down by the poor interface and also the numerous bugs and the bad resolution.

I wonder what brood war would be like with sc2-like interface, and no I don't mean those broodwar maps
