Ha!
I know nothing about image editing. I just took in game screenshots and used a Icon making program (cant remember which one right now). Set the image size and cut the in game buttons for the units.
You right-click a direct acess (such as starcraft or your replays folder in your desktop) and click on properties and theres should be 3 buttons in the new window. The middle one should say "change icon". Then you have to search for the file where you downloaded it.
Each icon image has its own size: widthxheight in pixels (a picture counts width*height pixels). Icons may have different sizes up to 256x256. Generally you will meet square icons with the following sizes: 16x16, 32x32, 48x48, etc... These sizes are common in Windows: for instance, 32x32 icons are displayed on your desktop, 16x16 icons are used in the taskbar and quick launch bar.
Good idea. I think I'll make my desktop a screenie of me playing with a gateway selected, and have my icons in the bottom right, as if it's a real game. Haha this is going to be sweet.

Rightclick somewhere on the desktop (where no icon is), chose properties. On the Desktop-Tab there is a button "Customize Desktop". In the following dialog you can change the icons for ownfiles, my computer, network and paperbin.
