I honestly feel like you need to be single to be the best sc player. or at least it really really helps.

DongRaeGu has a GF. I'm sure he did poorly.

I'm sure there are those that can do it, but once I started dating someone again, my sc time took a hit. Also, players like flash, who are single, can dedicate more time to being the best. obviously not a rule, just an idea.

So one tournament shows that not being single is bad? What about the previous GSL wins? I know for a fact that MC had his gf still when he won 2 gsl's Pretty sure MVP and Nestea did to but I don't know for a fact of those two. lol I just don't get how you can go by 1 tournament and think you are right.
When I think of something else, something will go here

Korean BW coaches were really vigilant about not letting their players get into relationships because having a girlfriend does, in fact, hurt your performance in the game.

As the game gets harder and requires more time to be good you will see a rise in single gamers. In early gsl players could get away with only practicing a few hours a day. Fruitdealer and several other players talked about not practicing like in bw. Once the game becomes more complex you will need complete dedication, like a flash to be the best.

That is nonsense. As long as you can keep up with the current metagame, you'll be doing fine if you're a good player. Just copy other people's builds and strats and practice them.

No-one needs to learn the entire game with all possible builds, maps, and counters to them to be good at it.

people will be able to half-ass practice until someone starts putting in serious effort, when putting in 16 hours isnt a special event but expected

NesTea said at MLG that he practiced especially hard for MLG sometimes putting 16 hour days, i may be wrong but i thought 16 hour days was the standard for BW players?

Well, yes, but you yourself said "as long as you can keep up." But being good and being the best are different things, with different practice requirements. As soon as a new breed comes along (ie, pro BW teams switching to SC2), the requirements for being the best are going to change, a lot.

Kind of a derail inc, so just skip if you don't care.

+ Show Spoiler +

I do not believe that BW teams switching to SC2 will change anything in that regard. What are you thinking that will accomplish? They will invent a way to train for more hours than there are in a day and somehow make up for the at least two years they've not been playing SC2?

Or are you thinking BW pros can pick up the game just like that with a snap of their fingers, and be competitive at the highest level? I haven't seen anything that would indicate this is true. Certainly not from e.g. Fin, who's been lauded as the SC2 Jesus on these very forums, and whoever else switched and was hyped up like crazy.

And the top tier old guard won't switch anyways. They have their money, their fame, and their fans. They will not be re-learning a new game from two years behind and become bad all of a sudden for possibly just a couple more years in the spotlight until they retire from active gaming anyways.

So when those rumoured BW teams do make the switch, what are they going to bring to the SC2 landscape? Harder, maybe more systematic training? Possibly. More money? Maybe. Their old fans? Doesn't really affect the game that much.

If there ever is a good time to switch, it is HoTS. With that a lot of the current strategies will be reset, and people will be scrambling to rise to the top as the metagame begins to formulate. If they do it then, and give it their best, maybe we will see a top BW team succesfully attempt the switch. But then that will have been due to the game resetting, not necessarily due to their magic BW skills.

So in summary, while I don't disagree that the game can and will develop further, and that some BW players can be successful at SC2, I do not think that there is anything particularly special or magic about BW players that would affect the current or future state of the game. And certainly nothing that would make it impossible for current SC2 players to have a girlfriend now or in the future.

Which is a ridiculous thought anyways --why would you have to sacrifice all your free time to be good at the game? There's 24 hours in a day, play 12h, sleep 8h, then go watch a movie and have dinner with your girlfriend. You seriously think that you'll lose to a player who practices 16h in a day and sleeps 6h just because of that? All other things influencing this are not equal, no matter how much people want to assume they are.

your forgetting 5 things
1) HoTS will reset everything, everyone will have to relearn the game essentially
2) Blizzcon, BW pros went to blizzcon and were blown away from the size of the crowd switching to SC2 means theyll have more fans, more exposure and more money
3) this game is amazingly easy to learn most of there skills from BW will be easily transferable, the only things theyd have to learn is some specific strats and timings wich wouldnt take long at all
4) it has been confirmed that alot of BW teams are already practicing SC2 so they are going to switch, not jsut one or two people but the enitre scene will eventually switch
5) SC2 is a game where you can sometimes outhink your opponent, and you can always outmacro your opponent if BW pros switch with empeciably mechanics theyll simply steamroll people becuase there macro is so good, there could be some players who always have less then 25 energy on there nexus, who always meet every larvae inject, who always keep up inpeccable creep spread who dont miss a warp gate cycle, who perfectly sutterstep a drop while microing a push at the front while macroing

if BW pros switch and put there insane practice schedule to use theyll jump straight to the top

There are a number of mechanisms by which having a gf vs. being single might influence performance in a video game or sports performance, many more than just time resources. One could think of the influence of hormonal changes as an example. But not every theoretical mechanism comes into play or makes a great difference. Also the direction of the influence (better or worse performance after getting into a relationship) is again depending on which mechanisms get into play, which is the situation of the player overall etc.

I think the opinion voiced by motbob is therefore an oversimplification and seems to only consider the time aspect. This point of view suggests that playing performance is unidirectionally influenced by number of practice hours. From a theoretical standpoint I would disagree with that and I do not believe that getting into a relationship is necessarily hurtful to (e-)sports performance. But I am open to be convinced by the data on which motbob based his conclusions on.
