There are ton of people who watch dubs, but they are not the same crowd as those who post on anime forum and esport sites.

Dubs can be decent. Look at some of Funimations they are pretty good. People hear the japanese voices first typically and when they hear something different in english they flip a shit. Dont get me wrong there are alot of bad dubs but there is also alot of decent ones people dont give credit to

So I when I got a new laptop, I got Windows 8. For about 1week I have been trying to get Sharin no Kuni to work but I always get an error. Is anyone familiar with the problem?
|
Win8 caused quite a number of compatibility issues with VNs iirc, sometimes makers put out patches for them. Since iirc sharin was purely fansubbed and not an official port, you might just need to try to get access to akabee's site and see. Unfortunately they also block foreign IPs.

Fuuuuck, so I take it that I am better off getting rid of Windows 8 and going back to Windows 7 if that is possible?

Well crap, this may be difficult for me since I have had no experience with this stuff.

The problem is that there are good subs and bad subs, and you don't know which one is bad until you actually got it already. Why take a chance when there is better alternatives.
Also even good dubs have pace / sync issues.

You can get a win7 VM installed in JP language setting. There are online instructions on how to do it (or find someone who can help you), but you do need get a copy of win7.

With dubs it seems the only good ones all take actors from this very small pool of people. Other times it either just doesn't translate well over or they chose the laziest way to translate something so it comes out as super corney. Too few animes imo have that balance of being dubbed with solid cast AND also translate the dialogue well enough. I do agree though that there are a decent amount of well done dubs, they just usually aren't for the shows I want them to be lol.

Issue is mostly to get to those patches and/or whether companies care enough to get things working. There is probably a compiled list somewhere knowing the Japanese.
I'll try to remember to look to see if Akabee had any patches for win8 compatibility I guess, though with them kind of restructuring I doubt they care enough to try to get old games to work.
EDIT - took a look, saw nothing.

I'm almost done with Nana t.t

The reason so many people hate dubs is because the quality of voice acting is lower, much lower. It's really that simple. I can watch animated children's shows (as in made for like 4 year olds), without cringing just fine, because they actually have voice actors with talent playing the parts (even if it is meant for kids).
Most anime dubs on the other hand, feel so awkward and horrible that it makes me cringe listening to it.

I guess I'm just not bothered by VAs. As long as it's not offensively bad, the voices don't matter nearly as much as the plot/animation/characters.
Edit: dubs bother me when the translators fuck up their job, but that's not what we're talking about

Japanese can sometimes be annoying when there are too many western names, for example I felt Baccano dubs were better.

The awkward feeling is more from the shows are written in Japanese in the first place, so when translate everything won't sync up as well.
It's like translated songs / poems are always super awkward.
