Macross Plus, as was mentioned, is really good. Its like Macross+Top Gun. The original Macross is a classic up there with MSG, except SDF Macross actually aged a million times better than it has IMO. Its technically my favorite anime of all time. Macross DYRL (Do You Remember Love?) is a good movie version retelling of the original. Really good animation and music in it. Macross 7 is love it or hate it, apparently. I've never seen it. It is really heavy on the music. Like, really heavy on music. They actually fight battles by playing the guitar/singing while also piloting a Valkyrie at the same time. Macross 2 is ok. It is considered AU. It takes place after the original, but goes off on its own timeline apart from the other shows. It has some really cool battles, good animation, cool mechs. I guess plot wise it isn't bad, but its not up to par with the original, thats for sure. Never seen Macross Zero, also haven't heard much about it, other than apparently it has good dogfights.
Another thing to keep in mind, is every story within Macross is virtually self contained. You understood Frontier well enough without having seen the original, right? The others work the same way. So even though they are all in the same timeline (other than Macross 2), you can watch them in whatever order you want.
But the actual timeline would go something like Zero->Macross/DYRL->Plus->7->Frontier. There is 28 years between DYRL and Plus, 33 years between DYRL and 7, 47 between DYRL and Frontier, and 80 years between DYRL and 2.
You know, now that I think about it, maybe Macross 2 is better than what I remember. Normally if I say something is just "ok", but then go on to say that it has really cool battles and mechs, the part that makes it not "real good" is the plot and stuff... But honestly I can't remember any major flaw sticking out. Maybe I should rewatch it again.

That's pretty much an in-joke. In one super robot war game, when a bunch of random loli's in Char's team, he gets mysterious 'bonus'. Same with Haman when she gets little boys in toll. In short, both are pedo, Char takes the cake because he also preyed on Haman when she's young.

Yeah, I know. You are talking about Char's Deleted Affair with 'preying on Haman', right? You are talking to the thread's resident mecha/Gundam fanatic :p
Alright, I know we're not specifically supposed to talk about old anime that everyone has seen, but fuck it. I just started watching Gurren Lagann again. I don't care how old it is, or how talked to death it's been, but that show still makes me pumped as fuck every single episode.
Also, have you read DOUBLE K? You should really read DOUBLE K if you like Gurren Lagann.
I don't think there're any rules against talking about old stuff to be honest, especially if you putz around this thread. The only thing we get tired of is when someone randomly comes in, posts one thing about some random old anime everyone's watched, and never comes back again.

You should watch the second movie if you haven't done that yet (Lagann-hen).
First movie was pretty much just a recap from the first-half of TV serie but second either had new content or I was imagining it. Was awesome in any case.

The second does in fact have new content. I don't specifically remember any story content, but the final battle.... holy crap. And lol at the "hacking" sequence.

There isn't any rule about talking about "old" anime, we do it all the time. Although, I wouldn't classify TTGL as "old" lo. Its only been, what, 3-4 years?
I've said this before, but I guess I can say it now as well. TTGL is a good, fun show to watch. Its nice to see a Super Robot show actually get popular. While it really isn't something against TTGL itself, its just sad when so many people watch Gurren Lagann, love it, but then just... assume it was one of a kind, and don't bother with any of the older, (imo) better shows that it heavily drew inspiration from.

Well, it's not "old", but as someone who frequents /a/, bring up anything that's not currently airing and they'll crap on you for not being up to date. Makes me a bit hesitant.
It's not the best Super Robot, and it's not the first (nor will it be the last), but I think it's the most enjoyable. Not from a narrative standpoint, or anything like that, but it's a story and series that doesn't take itself seriously, and is there to be inspiring and fun without too much dark depths. It's one that I can watch pretty much whenever and still have fun with.

Its the best from a budget standpoint. The animation and music of the show was all really good. Gainex goes all-out with their Mech show budgets lol. Enjoyment wise, I enjoyed things like Gunbuster, Getter Robo, Godannar, or GaoGaiGar Final more. Super Robot shows by their very nature don't take themselves too seriously, and are inspiring/fun to watch. Few get really "dark", but even those that do just use it to enhance the "coolness" factory.

Well yeah, it's Gainax.
I just feel, and I could be wrong here, that Gurren Lagann takes "not taking itself seriously" to a whole new level. Like, in the latter half of the second part, they just stopped trying to describe anything and just threw in science-y words that everyone ignores.
Still, those shows are all amazing and enjoyable as well. I want to give Getter and Gunbuster another view as well after this, I'm on a kick of these types lately.
Also, I'm now aware that all these shows start with G (if you ignore Tengen Toppa).

Have you ever watched GaoGaiGar Final? IMO, GGGF is what the second half of TTGL wanted to be, except it was earlier, and IMO better. For example:
Its pretty easy to point out shows that don't take itself as seriously, like TTGL. G Gundam, Shin Jeeg, Getter, etc. G Gundam is essentially about giant robot Olympic professional wrestlers, and has moments like this. Shin Jeeg has stuff like this. This is a direct quote from Getter Robo Armageddon, and accurately describes alot of the stuff that happens. New Getter they have scenes like this, which describes the feel/mood the show was going for lol. Even Godannar has ever single robot team based on a particular sexual fetish (normal japanese, S&M russians, lesbian americans, incest british). All of these shows, including TTGL are good, and like TTGL, they don't really take themselves as serious as you would expect out of your normal "Real Robot" show.
Gunbuster is kinda different in that, while its still really inspirational, it does keep elements of realism and does try to take itself seriously. But most in the genre aren't really thinking-anime lol.
G is the most hot-blooded letter in the alphabet.
@Blasty: Last I looked, Aquarion was winning the poll.
Hm, I guess I haven't watched enough to compare it to, thanks for the recommendations! I really like the Super Robot type (G Gundam still holds a place in my heart for being so corny/silly/awesome), so I'll have to check these all out. I still think TTGL will hold a nostalgic place in my heart, though. But Shin Jeeg looks awesome, I've never heard of it before now.

Shin Jeeg aired the same season as TTGL, and so it kinda got completely eclipsed/un-noticed because of it. It has a really good OP too:
Dat JAM Project...
I understand about the nostalgia part. Shows that I watched a long time ago have a special place in my heart (Robotech, Escaflowne, Gundam SEED), and its difficult for anything to overcome that nostalgia.
