On December 11 2012 11:30 BlackMagister wrote: Oda regretting making Shanks lose his arm because Oda would eventually make Shanks into one of the strongest pirates in the One Piece universe is good to know. It does seem like a plot hole that Shanks would lose his arm to a weak sea king when he knows conqueror haki and already had a reputation (Whitebeard for example was shocked Shanks lost an arm). Though the concept of haki was probably not fully developed either.
Although the biggest thing that bothers me about One Piece is still Kuina's death where she died by falling down stairs in her own house after making the number 1 swordsman/woman promise with Zoro. I mean really Oda gave convenient diseases to Roger and Whitebeard to cut their reigns short plus other random characters but not Zoro's childhood friend. It could even have been a revenge fantasy if she was killed by a pirate hence why Zoro became a pirate hunter "You're the scum who killed my friend, prepare to die". The ridiculousness of her death makes me want to believe that Tashigi is Kuina even though it doesn't make sense. What is so ridiculous about a little girl falling and breaking her neck? Not every human being in One Piece is super human.

Besides the fact falling down stairs isn't always lethal how likely would it be that she would fall down the stairs. How many children fall to death and die in the stairs of the house they grew up in? It was her house, she grew up and was used to moving around in it. No parenting handbook says to keep 7+ year old children away from stairs because they might kill themselves.

My sister used to always fall down the stairs. She never got seriously hurt, but it's still entirely possible that she could have been.
No parenting handbook says to not allow your child to eat solid foods because they could choke easily either. That's hardly a point at all.

Just started reading this manga yesterday (when I should have been studying for finals). Already on chapter 140 and so far it's awesome!

Hmm I'm trying to find stats on deaths by stairs but all they talk about in specifics is children under 5. And yes I have tripped on objects, unfamiliar terrain, and almost tripped familiar terrain when I was preoccupied or impaired. Death by stairs still seems extremely uncommon for someone her age. Someone who was also a trained martial artist and hence would be stronger and more coordinated than other children her age.
To add to that this wasn't just after the "promise" it was literally less than 12 hours from the promise. Kuina's story was told within a chapter using 6 pages because of how simple Oda made the story. Zoro definitely has the weakest and most contrived back story.

I can't believe you seriously think "girl tripped/fell down some stairs and broke her neck" is "ridiculous". People trip. If you trip in the wrong place, things could be bad. And thats what happened.

People die in accidents and it is sad, but One Piece is a story every death happened because the creator made it happen usually to follow the rules of that universe. Kuina's death was to give Zoro a motivator and it is ridiculous in my opinion because it happens too coincidentally to give Zoro a motivation right after the promise, to a child old enough that death from falling down the stairs would be rare and to a martial artist. The promise itself was already a dangerous dream, but her death was not by Mihawk, Das Bones, a bullet, Sea Kings, bad weather or the many other things in One Piece out to kill characters, but stairs.
Edit: Forkrider her story is only 7 pages, where does she show signs of being a klutz. http://www.mangapanda.com/103-2047-10/one-piece/chapter-5.html

She said her chest was growing, so being heavier in the front than she was used to made her fall forward, thus she was killed by boobs, not stairs.
And everyone knows being killed by boobs is a legitimately way to die.
Case closed.

Air, despite what you may believe, is not naturally solid.

It cannot make something that is not supposed to be solid, such as air, solid it was never said that it can only make things that are naturally solid and turn non-solid solid again it simply was explained that it can make things solid Show nested quote +Haki was explained. You really have no reason to say "you can't prove us wrong", when it was already explained and it's explanation proves you wrong. We have no reason at all to believe haki has any more usages than what we were told, and we weren't told it can do what you claim it can. im sure Oda plans to make a much more rich universe then one that can be explained in 2 pages RAyleigh jsut gave the basic idea of how Haki works and its event aht basic explanation that im basing my theory on he said it can force things to become solid which fits perfectly in how Rokoshiki users jump in the air thats mroe likely to be jsut strong guy being scary if it was Haki then why didnt he just harden his arm or jsut dodge the attack? Show nested quote +The marines have entire cuffs, nets and cages made of them, the entirety of ships bottoms coated with them (to protect from sea kings). we havent seen nets made entirely of seastone (obviously since its such a hard metal), weve seen nets with seastone in them but since Buggy and Mr. 3 were able to climb one of those nets its obviously not that effective at handling fruit users also making entire cages out of seastone is pointless if you have cuffs made of seastone, if the fruit user is barely strong enough to stand he couldnt break out of a normal cage Show nested quote +Here's an idea: giant pumps to make it rain sea water. Have ten warships surrounding the island bombarding it with sea water. Hurts no one except fruit users.
Edit: okay all they need is an umbrella.... uhhh how about have part of the army use water guns? I mean there's got to be a way to exploit sea water without it in stone form. fruit users have to be submerged in water not jsut wet its possible that on Shabondy they could make guns that fire bubbles full of water, if a fruit user got caught int aht hed be unable to escape and would drown
Rokushiki is a martial art and Haki is Ambition. Go to One Piece wiki page and look both of those up, they are both clearly explained. There is no way to know what Oda has planned and you can make any theory you want, people in this thread are just telling how this are this far in story, that being that Rokushiki is a martial art and that Haki is Ambition. As for Shanks stopping the Sea King, the reason he did not stop it with Armament Haki or avoid the attack all-together was the same reason luffy was able to scare away wolves and stop marines from executing Ace, that reason being that you can have Conquerors Haki without having Armament haki or Mantra. So he probably had Conquerors Haki before he got the other 2. Basically conquerors Haki isn't something you can attain through training, although if you already have it you can improve it. While armament haki and mantra is something everyone can learn, just not many people know about it or how to train for it. Please please please if you have doubts on anything, go to http://onepiece.wikia.com/wiki/Main_Page
Do not rely on speculation, your own theories or anything else other than what is in the books, otherwise you will completely misunderstand One Piece for something it is not.

I never bought the whole concept of the girl falling down the stairs to death. Probably just temporary memory loss or something like that. The captain that resembles her even wears glasses, just like her father did.

One more day till next chapter! I hate waiting every week!

First time I trip in my own house (not counting knocking my toe on some corner) was just a month ago, been living here 17years. Totally possible.
It's abit weak indeed but it might be that she hit her head and lost her memory.
Shanks loosing his arm has always bothered me but at least he's still one of the strongest. Maybe it's just that his crew is very strong.

Nope, Shanks himself is very very strong. It's known that he fought Mihawk many times who is considered the strongest swordsman and he crossed swords with Whitebeard which led to a split sky. It's safe to say that Shanks is really strong and it's also bugging me that he lost his arm to a shark but I try to convince myself that he... a) ...wasn't strong back then (which would be weird though). b) ...did it on purpose to teach Luffy a lesson about sacrifices for friends or something.

Things like Kuina's death are the reason why one piece is special. Not everything is mystical or has a greater good, bad things just happen.
|
If you fall from the stairs and you land on a pretty bad angle chances are you are either alive, crippled, comatose, or dead.

ya im sure the fan based wiki is mroe accurate then the author made story im drawing my examples from
something supernatural has to power Rokoshiki or walking on air would be impossible
i just assumed since Zoro said Tashigi reminds him of her so much
