I mean i don't really think spoiling myself one way or another is a big deal either way, but usually i want to read the book first and then watch the movie. Not sure if i wanna wait that long though (reading other stuff atm)

First off: One has to look at this movie as some form of fairytale otherwise the plot doesn't make much sense. We follow a mute lady who works as a cleaning power at some secret US labatory. One day a new test object arrives, the monster, our main character elisa finds it, is fascinated by it and vists it more often and ultimately falls in love with it. There is also a sideplot going on which creates the drama. Visually this movie is amazing, i can understand why it won the oscar for set design (even though bladerunner would have been my favorite there), our main character is charming, the plot is ok. The acting performances are fine, nothing outstanding though. As i said at the beginning, you really have to look at this as some kind of fairytale to really appreciate it, it's definitely executed like one though (the story even starts with a narrator). It has its own charm, reminds me a little bit of amélie fused with del toro's pan's labyrinth. Sadly both mentioned movies are imo better, do more with the stylistic choice and therefore create more of that magical feeling (the music in shape of water does help though, it's definitely magical). I think it was a good movie, would definitely recommend checking it out but i don't understand the hype around it. 7.5/10

So um with the academy awards and what I personally thought was a pretty lame year for films behind us, anyone got any hype for some movies due in 2018? I really wanna hit the cinema some more this year
|
Academy awards are always lame, it celebrates movies most people don't like.
Infinity war is the culmination of ten years and 18 movies so thats got to be some hype. It'll probably be a huge mess but the amount of money and planning behind it has to at least give an avengers two sort of vibe.
theres a ton of movies this year that can go either way though. Latino spider man xmen venom fantastic beasts two pacific rim deadpool 2 and incredibles two can just as easily be meh as much as hype.
|
The Academy awards are Hollywood giving awards to itself for reasons that the academy values at that given time. This is why LaLa land was thought to be a shoe in, right up until the amazing moment when Moonlight(the vastly superior and more arresting film) really won.
|
Academy awards surely have their flaws, basically only american movies are considered, some categories are basically worthless (animated feature for example) and the voting process in general could need some work. Still, usually the nominations have their merit and most people not enjoying the movies being celebrated there is more a flaw of the people in my honest opinion About 2018, i don't know yet. Usually i get hyped for new movies by certain directors moreso than for anything else. Need to still do some research if/what's in the work there.

I used to hate award shows until Linda Holmes pointed out that they are a great way to see how Hollywood, or any industry, feels about itself. I enjoy observing them in that context. And its a good way to hear about movies that I might never hear of.

2017 wasn't that bad. Good Time, Logan, The Night is Short Walk on Girl, Get Out, Raw, John Wick 2, A Taxi Driver and Atomic Blonde were all solid offerings imo.
the "academy" is a fucking joke, and why anyone but the most rabid fashionista would care is beyond me.
edit (2018 hype): The Incredibles 2 and Deadpool 2 could be good. judging by the trailer the new Mission Impossible looks like it might be worth checking out too (a rare franchise that keeps getting better and better imo). potential new offerings from Harmony Korine, Wes Anderson and Paul Verhoven as well.

Heard great buzz over You Were Never Really Here. Should be a taut thriller (~90 minutes) with no bloat.

Pan's Labyrinth Rewatched this because of Shape of Water. This movie plays in the 1940s in spain after the civil war. Our main character is a little girl named Ofelia whose mother wed the military captain Vidal. She and her pregnant mother arrive at Vidal's current location and the story begins. Ofelia likes to read fairytales and during her stay at the new place magical things happen around her. The story around Vidal who hunts down rebels is the b-plot. What can i say, imo this is definitely superior to Shape of Water. From a technical point of view the new movie has the edge cgi wise, but Pan's Labyrinth still looks amazing, the art/creature design is fabulous, the cinematography on point. More importantly though, the story is more mature, more fantastic, gives you more room to interprete it and the characters feel more real as well. The side plot in this movie is a lot more interesting, in general it focuses on these two main storylines while Shape of Water adds a little bit too much noise in other places. Pan's Labyrinth is a dark (i have to stress this, it's definitely a fairytale for adults), magical experience and del toro's best work to date. 9/10

The stuttering scene is truly a masterpiece in itself, so brutal to watch.

Am I the only person who thinks that Del Toro's best movie is Hellboy 2? I'm prepared for the answer to that to be yes.
Pan's Labyrinth is very good, but I wasn't a fan of the Shape of Water.
|
His best work was obviously Pacific Rim. I'm prepared to elbowrocket people that disagree.
Hellboy 2 was a very fun movie... But better than Pan's Labyrinth?... You mad?

Yeah quite possibly I'm mad. Maybe its due to the context of Pan's Labyrinth being another horribly bleak and dark movie that came out at a time when all the movies were horribly dark and bleak. I haven't seen it in a long time, maybe I would prefer it now.

GDT has this great ability of making movies that arn't ment to be "great movies" but are intended to be about a specific thing. In Pacific rim he made a generally shitty movie but it had amazing giant robot vs giant monster fighting. You shouldn't judge Pacific rim based on its story but on its robot vs monster fighting.
I look at pacific rim 2 and I see the squeals choice was to double down on the robot vs monster fighting. the movie overall might be meh but the robot vs monster fighting is what its about. Pans labyrinth Is a arthouse movie thats not up its own ass. I admit that arthouse movies might have some good ones among them but they're more impenetrable then Warhammer 40k.

Pan's Labyrinth is great. The historical part I enjoyed. The fantasy part is interesting and ultimately fit well with the movie. The villain was excellently played - brutal but calculated. Some scenes are too violent though.
|
I like Pan's Labyrinth for the same reason I like Big Fish. You just don't know how much is fantasy and how much is actually going on in objective reality.
It makes for such an interesting world, and a reminder that we don't "just" live in objective reality, we experience it subjectively.

The Outsider
Good movie and amazing cinematography. The dialogue from Jared Leto was minimal, but his intensity in this movie was amazing. The Japanese actors and actresses were impressive as well, flowing from English to Japanese pretty smoothly. I highly recommend this if you have 2 hours to spare. 9/10

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind We follow our shy main protagonist Joel who meets the extroverted Clementine on a train. They immediately like each other and start dating. As time goes on problems arise and Clementine - like the impulsive person she is - visits a firm which can erase memories, the memories of Joel. This movie is about love, relationships, memory, living in the moment, trust, among other things. It's beautifully done, i don't wanna spoil anything but the writing is superb and especially our main characters Joel (Jim Carry) and Clementine (Kate Winslet) are a treat to watch, excellent performances. There is also a little side plot about people of the memory erasing company, very well done as well and ties into the main themes. It's a beautiful movie and everyone should watch it at least once. 9/10

Raw Vegetarian Justine starts her time at the veterinary school her parents went to (and sister is attending atm). Her being a rookie she has to go through some rituals the older students run, like being splattered in blood or eating a raw rabbit kidney. After eating that raw meat she feels really bad, gets a rash and suddenly appears to have a ravenous appetite for meat. Not only the meat of animals though... At its core it's a coming of age story, the naive girl visits college and learns that life is more than just books. The first sex, drugs, party, etc. This movie shocks though, the imagery is sometimes really gross but never over the top gratuitous. All the themes are well developed, the acting performances are good to great (justine) and the movie just immerses you well. My only real problem is the writing here and there, i think it gets unbelievable in some instances and even though these elements are usually used as a metaphor, i think the core story should still make sense because it's not portrayed as a movie where you have to interprete everything. (though you definitely can look deeper into this one, which explains the high score ) 8/10
