Annihilation

We follow our main protagonist Lena (biology professor) doing an expedition into the mysterios "shimmer" , a region which appeared after a meteor strike. Every other person who went into it before never came back, well except for her husband, a soldier, who recently came out but doesn't remember anything and fights for his life. To save him Lena joins a group of female scientists to go in. In the shimmer they find weird mutations of plants and animals and their state of mind changes as well.
I was looking forward to see this movie and while i think it's good i am still disappointed. Aesthetically it's awesome, the environment depicted will give you pictures you won't forget so fast, the plot is the weak point though and even the characters aren't all that interesting. We deal with themes like self destruction, change in general among other things, but it's all really surface level imo. The acting is fine but nothing outstanding either. I would still recommend to check it out, but it's no must see.

6.5-7/10

Reading through that text I wonder how you would conclude that into a 6.5-7 ...
Personally I found Annihilation to be very disappointing ... or simply plain boring Would not rate it higher than 5 and the only saving grace is that the concept is pretty nice and cinematography is great :X

Well i think it's still worthwhile to watch it, a 5 would be basically "average" and i think it's better than that. The cinematography and general design was pretty good, there definitely are good scenes in it but the hype would have suggested a truly great movie and it's far from that. I also enjoyed the themes even though i think it's all "surface level".
Maybe 6-6.5 would be closer to my actual feeling, but these ratign numbers are never really that precise anyway :D

What did you think about the end? I heard some people thought it to be really bad, personally i think it did its job pretty well. (and the design of that thing was remarkable)

Maybe I simply do not appreciate stylistic movies / art as much. Its not that I would need action or gore all the time, but it just didn't wake any interest. It was sloppy presented imo, especially scientists touching everything without gloves etc triggers me :D!

I thought the ending was... confusing. An unknown entity from another planet? outter space? No explanation whatsoever? I feel that is lazy... maybe I didn't get what it was supposed to express?

some spoilers:

+ Show Spoiler +
Well the whole movie in general is about evolution/change (the alien part with mutations, copies, etc), mutliple times they mention cancer, it's basically an anaolgy for the alien. Coming to the world and changing it, probably not even having any plan, just following its programming.
The humans self destruct, the psychologist going into the zone because she has cancer, literally on a suicide mission, our main character destroying her life due to an affair, implied that her husband knew and accepted to go into the shimmer cause of that. Where he suicides as well.

The ending itself was a little bit ambiguous, with the shimmer in her eyes but i think she is still the real person and just changed biologically. The alien thing tried to copy her and in doing so it destroyed itself (the whole grenade thing).

There apparently is a book series which is more psychological, i think i will try that.
About scientists not behaving like scientists, well yeah that's kinda a trope at this point, they didn't really feel like scientists for the most part :D But i had problems with the characters in general, i guess our main character is somewhat interesting, but the rest disappointed for sure.

Compared to another recent scifi movie like arrival it simply didn't do enough with its story, characters and themes imo.
Still worth a watch if one is into scifi though i think.

I've been putting it off but I think I'll watch it tonight after work. Been staying out of this thread because I knew spoilers would pop up.

the new pacific rim was a pacific crap. 3 out of 10.
Terran in particular is a notoriously strong race for a no brain skillhand bot style.

Well yeah. Its a thinly vieled attempt to create some linkage between fights between giant monsters and giant robots. Was that part of the movie good?

I just saw pacific rim 2 and I absolutly loved it. Had amazing pace to it and it doubled down on what worked in the first movie while cutting out what didn't. The third act was really good and got super dumb and pulpy.

Its got bad things but If you enjoyed the first one you'll enjoy the second even more.

No country for old men
I first read the book and after i finished it i finally watched the movie as well.
We follow Llewelyn Moss who is hunting in the desert and coincidentally finds the place of a drug deal gone wrong. He steals the money and from now on will be hunted by the cartell and a psychopathic killer named Anton Chigurh who also murders other people along the way.
Sheriff Tom Bell is working on this case, an old man who is close to his retirement.

The technical aspects of this movie are very well done, the cinematography, the acting, tension building due to not playing music, etc. If i hadn't read the book i would probably like this movie a lot more, but i did. I think in general it's really close to the book plot wise, but some changes are made which imo remove some of the book's themes. I also had some pacing/editing issues. It's still a tense thriller though i would recommend to anyone, it's a very good movie just not as great as the source material.

8/10

This is what I am looking for in my dumb giant robots vs sea monsters movie. I saw that there are robots fighting each other too, so clearly they are getting down with the best comic/anime trope: Differing points of view being worked out via face punching. These two heroes disagree on how to be an effective hero: They should debate….with their fists!

I thought Game Night was absolutely hilarious and very cleverly awkward. Definitely recommend it if you're looking for a comedy, and especially if you like competitive game nights.

Just saw Ready Player One. Was hyped for this movie since my older cousin recommended me the book some time ago and didnt have the time to read it so I watched the movie and I'd give it a 7 or maybe an 8 out of 10. Only thing that kinda let me down was towards the end some kind of big army battle that happened could have been better.

Walked into the theater planning to watch Pacific Rim 2. Saw that my theater was doing one of those Ghibli Film Fest things and decided to see Ponyo instead since I didn't watch it before. It's a good film.

in favor of logical decisions?
The unrealistic sound of these propositions is indicative, not of their utopian character, but of the strength of the forces which prevent their realization.

I was going to make a comment comparing Rian Johsnon to a child solider in Africa but I realized that that was going way overboard. Its a good movie If it was a standalone or just in a universe with it and TFA. Its not in those universes. Its a film that does more damage to the star wars property then the prequels did and spits in the face of the fans just for the sake of being different.

But really its not Sky captain and the world of tomorrow or Elysium. Lets not get crazy here.

Kylo stopping his invasion to face Luke alone, because he wants to show off or whatever instead of just marching on, plowing everything in his way.
The admiral, or whoever she was, watching a dozen ships blowing up, already knowing she's the volunteer left on the doomed ship, before turning it around to fly it into the main cruiser.
Rey just feeling like entering the enemy base like it's no biggie, to turn the apprentice of the biggest evil in the universe. How is she even able to enter the base? Why is everyone waiting for her like they knew she was coming?
The First Order droid knowing what's up, instead of putting everyone on high alert immediately, no, they wait AFTER they've breached into it, just to make it a: AHA YOU'VE BEEN CAUGHT moment. What was the reason for that entire arc anyway? Buildup for the admiral to show her sacrifice? To make it all the more impactful?
Why is Luke so conflicted for being a Jedi master the entire arc on the island was dreadful. Fuck I'm digressing by stating my gripes with the movie instead of talking about characters acting like morons.
I guess these are the main ones I can recall (or the only ones), but I feel like they could've been solved more tactfully without losing any of the big screen moments.

so you mean "in lieu of logical decisions" or "in place of logical decisions" or "to the detriment of logical decisions"

I don't get it. My language is faulty here? The writers or the characters (depending on how to look at it), favoured drama over logic. Isn't that how the expression goes? Guess I'm a dumdum then lol
Edit: looking back, I tried to use "in place of" but felt that somehow "in favor of" made some sense as it was meant to be x favored over y". I just wasn't thinking about my language usage!
