For Odyssey, I would rank it pretty high up, borderline top 5 Nolan movies for me.

I was a huge ancient and especially Greek mythology and history nerd as a kid, haven't really read the translations since then but I knew the general themes and outlines.

I think it was very good, there are flaws of course, like yeah, even in non-IMAX theater some parts were genuinely deafening, but it kind of fit with the scene where it was happening where those sounds are supposed to make you uncomfortable and disoriented.

Other then occasionally being too loud, none of the previous Nolan criticisms of his films really apply for me (well, a bit underwritten dialogue has been plaguing him his whole career so I'm not counting that), the dialogue is perfectly audible, there is no super convoluted plot or excessive time jumping, yes some of the messaging can be a bit on the nose but that again, is just Nolan.

The movie looks gorgeous, the soundtrack is great, performances amazing, it's not boring and the 3 hours breezed by for me.

There were parts where I would have wanted to see more, or less, but overall it's a very good movie.

Spiderman Brand New Day

It's a great one, Tom Holland spiderman is consistently good.
Action sequence is one of the best in the MCU.
I think there's a lot of miss opportunities though, some of the stories didn't quite line up well, so it felt a little disjointed.

The box office figures are crazy, makes me happy that after 3-4 years of "Cinemas are dead" doomer bullshit this year has been kicking ass across the board.

From original, big director blockbusters doing well in Odyssey, to small indie Horrors 20x-ing their budget to the return of Marvel as the Summer blockbuster king.

Something for everyone, yey!

Spiderman BND might be my favorite spiderman movie. Also first + Show Spoiler +
first Jean Grey who honestly didnt feel dry and it wasnt even phoenix era yet(probably cause she's the villain of the movie and how they did it was pretty complicated with the mindjumping) good job for Sadie Sink and the script. Also first in the Holland spiderman that actually felt like OG spiderman again like the friendly neighborhood spiderman.

Bonus that they reset hulk for the future. And surprised to see enjoying Punisher's involvement here

I wish the Avatar movie was on the theaters it was entertaining enough.

Avatar fire and ash
Oof what a horrible movie. I couldn't even sit through the first 30 minutes.
As much fantasy element is in the series, it really lacks the sort of hook. At some point even the visual design is looking quite derivative.
The cast has growing too big, made worse with the teenagers angst mixed into it.
I would rather watch a terrible unpolished movie, than a polished extremely boring movie.

2/10

The furious
This has some of the most insane action sequences in recent memory.
It basically has non stop action for 90% of the movie.
Plot is very basic, but it does the job.

My only complaint is, some actions feel a little too cartoonish. John Wick keeps it short and lethal, here the martial art become a dance when it gets too long.

Still if you like martial art action, this is one of the better ones in recent memory.

Avatar is so much wasted potential... Sure, Cameron is introducing completely new tech, making a visual spectacle and redefining what can be done with SFX in cinema but at the same time, if you have pretty much unlimited budget and are doing such groundbreaking feats anyway why not pay a bit more to get some good writers in the mix?

The characters are super bland, the story is extremely basic. It's a great visual spectacle but it has exactly 0 social impact (have you seen any Avatar memes or references?) and you forget all about it 15 minutes after leaving the cinema.

New Spider-Man is OK. It's not stellar but if we consider the recent Marvel track record it's really good in comparison. But it's OK at best. A bit confusing, the overall character development is lackluster and in general it's not that great, but at least it's not bad and that's something.
Time is precious. Waste it wisely.

Joker folie à Deux
I didn't catch it in the cinema because of all poor rating.
It's finally on Netflix and I am surprised by how much I liked it.

Sure it's a musical (not particularly great one), but it's an interesting genre blend.
The controversial ending was quite a shock.
Shot beautifully as well.

Can't say too much because it's very easy to spoiler, but it really doesn't deserve such a low rating.

Did watch the new Spider-Man. I quite liked it. A bit disjointed overall but I did enjoy their attempt at portraying the drain of super hero life. It also wasn't 3 hours long which is always a nice surprise now a days.

I honestly think cutting out the other famous super hero fully would make for a shorter and better focused experience. Though it also plays into what I thought was the central theme of powers not making anybody happier.

It was perhaps a bit too much in your face but I didn't get bored and could relate to the characters. That is enough for an above average movie.

---------

I did end up going to see Odyssey after the very high reviews it got. A bit below average as a movie. Characters that one cannot relate to. Action scenes that didn't speak to me. Views that didn't pop. Monsters that didn't feel like scary, weighty monsters.

Chatted with 2 other people that watched and we all agreed it was not a movie for IMAX. There are only 1-2 visuals that makes it worth it. Very similar to Oppenheimer, both feel like movies recorded for TV or an average cinema. There was a somewhat long scene with lightning to dark sequences that was unwatchable, had to close my eyes and wait for it to pass.

Can't really complain about sound. Perhaps that they tried to use it to carry weak scenes in a few spots and thus they tried to do too much with it.

It was a movie that you can see a lot of budget and attention lavished at but the overall product isn't there. I just feel burnt by another Nolan movie, maybe I just don't like his style.

A lot of people like it and it is probably the movie that keeps selling the best of any IMAX screening I can recall here. Evening seats are still sold out. Commercially and review wise it is a big success.

I saw Spiderman, it was really cool. I liked how weaved the MCU characters. I'm a comics x-men fan so I was kinda irritated how Jean's powers were. but i liked how they let be problematic.

Also not sure if I dig the natural webshooters..... maybe thats how they justified a powerup or something?

Also was presently surprised by not reverting to the status quo with Peter & MJ. That probably took a lot of patience from the people at play to let them rekindle that later.

Gonna go see the Odyssey finally tomorrow in IMAX

You can tell there had been some major rewrite.
Peter's struggle and growth tied to spider/human DNA balance did not get fully explored, and his device "fix" became some sort of future anti X men device.

I hate the "younger / next generation" carbon copy of existing hero trend as everyone else, but I actually think they should have introduced/teased Miles Morales spiderman in this one, and bring him into the DOOM avenger movies.
Having both spiderman on screen would be very hyped.

I don't like it either, but I think its way, way more appropriate for live action. Since I think even with the most successful MCU actors, its so time consuming or at least, it requires so much calendar to be blocked off/on-call. I think thats why most of these MCU actors want out after a decade.

But yeah, on the other hand, Marvel has completely failed to make new stars out of the entireity of phase 5. So maybe thats more of a reason to set up the carbon copies.

The Odyssey - 70mm film IMAX

8/10

Big Nolan fan here, but I didn't LOVE it.

The original work, like many Greek mythology, is about God, human, fate and choices.
Nolan intentionally downplays the mythology to bring out his message and modernise it a little.
It was delivered quite well, especially at a time when the world has grown more chaotic and less kind. The controversial cast picks and the backlash make his message even more relevant.
But in some ways, it can be interpreted entirely different, which I will get to at the spoiler section.

Onto non-spoiler review:

You know sometimes you watched a movie in the TV, and you kinda wonder what it was like for the audience back then.
For me it was Ben-Hur.
The Odyssey is probably one of those movies when our children/grand children watch it on whatever format available.

Watching the entire movie shot in IMAX film, is such an interesting experience.

There's a bit of vignetting at the corners. Some scenes look like they belonged to a different era of movie, especially the scene where the Trojans pulling the horse in, it looked like a 1950s movie with that sort of colour/contrast.
However, at times, the look can be so different to the point that it lacks a good consistency.

Some of the big negatives really stood out to me.
1. The storyboard
2. The cast
3. The scale

To me, how Nolan is able to break apart a movie narrative structure and then pierce them together back is his best point.
And this is his weaker one, in fact some scenes felt like it was awkwardly cut in, and only brought back hours later, without a huge significance.

The characters are also quite a lot more one dimensional, and I didn't love what he did with Odysseus, who is supposed to be wiser/strategist than a warrior.

Tom Holland, Zendaya and the punisher Jon all back on the big screen together so soon, really took me out. What's worse is, all three of them in many ways, are not so different than their characters in spiderman.

What let me down the most is the scale. What's meant to tens of ships become just 3 at most.
Nolan definitely didn't learn his lesson from Dunkirk.
The problem with him unwilling to use more CGI, makes the entire journey felt like a rogue battle unit travelling along.

Nolan, intentionally or not, with this scaled down version of odyssey, makes the mythology smaller as well. You have one cyclops instead of multiples, the giant soldiers would have been way more frightening etc.

However, with all that being said, the movie is great. There're top quality elements everywhere, quite well pieced together.

Nolan's message is that with the broken moral code, the basic trust between men, the world starts to crumble down. I think it's relatively well delivered, but the problem is (spoiler ahead)

-

+ Show Spoiler +

With Odysseus return, he killed the suitors within his house by lying/tricking them.
Obviously, Nolan wanted to present Odysseus killing as justified, but isn't this just another act of defying trust?

If you look at it from another angle, the suitors of Penelope could represent immigrants who abuse the law and moral code of the locals.
Not unlike how the large influx of Muslims are demanding change in law in other countries. Surely Nolan isn't implying they need to be cleansed.

I think that's where the movie fell short, because it is extremely difficult to adapt such an epic tale and not losing a lot of what made it great.

In terms of adapting mythologies in the big screen, I still think the northman has done a far better job. It's brutal, the visual is stunning, the horror and the blur between reality and visions are great.

Trying to insert your anti-immigrant hate into a movie that has absolutely nothing to do with it is quite something.

Nolan, if anything whitewashed and displayed Odysseus as way less brutal and much more moral then he was in the epic, he doesn't just murder the suitors, he also kills all the slave girls who slept with them, again, quite brutally.

Hope: I think this is a unique jaw dropping thriller in the realm of Resident Evil with hints of Mad Max and Stand By Me. Almost like several movies wrapped together— Horror, action, drama, and comedy. The action is fantastic and I love the originality presented here. I think it casts a big net and brings in a lot of fun and exciting variety.

The Magic Faraway Tree: Colorful family movie with lots of movie magic. It has a good bit of jokes for adults and kids. Apparently there’s no plastic in the movie which juxtaposes the heavy CGI, ultimately giving a warm farmhouse vibe coupled with a playful dreamscape in fantasy imagination.

Deathstalker: I feel like this is a fun mythic tale plucked from the pages of a Dungeons & Dragons campaign. The actors deliver funny performances and the corny lines complement the practical Jim Hensian effects. It has funny characters, cool action scenes, great costume design, and a killer metal soundtrack. Gave me Conan The Barbarian meets Willow vibes.

I think you completely misunderstood my point.

I am not writing about my stance on immigration. I am writing about how it could be interpreted, as in it wasn't presented well.

The entire trip he took, was his guilt for betraying something so socially important, i.e. gods rule / people trust in it.
Now either you think his takeaway was that the rules dont actually mattered and that he needs to move on, or he has repented.

If you were the camp on the latter, you would have seen his killing for those men yet another breaking of God's rule, that you need to treat your guest right.

If you are the former, then it seems my viewpoint about him kicking out those who abuses rules is justified and that the journey was just him coming to accept this is ok to do.
