didnt even include black panther. what are you? a white supremacist?
The unrealistic sound of these propositions is indicative, not of their utopian character, but of the strength of the forces which prevent their realization.

I'm going to make a point of going to see Annihilation in a few days so this thread can have something to talk about besides Marvel

Best Marvel movies to date (in no particular order) would be:
- Captain America: The Winter Soldier
- Captain America: Civil War
- Guardians of the Galaxy I & II
- Thor: Ragnarok
- Logan
- X-Men: First Class
- Ant-Man

This list is good and I would even argue the order is good(Thor: Ragnarok should be above Guardians 2).

To talk about an actual good film again, i recently saw

Room

Don't confuse this with "the room" please :D "Room" is about a mother and her son who are trapped in a small place. What's important to note is that the kid has never seen anything else because he was born in their trap. I won't say anything more about the plot and if i were you i probably wouldn't watch the trailers either, even though the plot itself isn't really all that important anyway imo.
What this movie does exceptionally well is showcasing the relationship between the young woman (in her early 20s) and her 5 year old son. Both acting performances are phenomenal, you really see a mother and her child when you watch this movie, it feels incredibly real. It's heartbreaking, it's wonderful, it makes you feel all kind of emotions and i am not ashamed to admit that i got teary eyes. The cinematography isn't flashy but it succeeds where it wants to succeed, you feel the limited space in the scenes where this is the focus, you perceive the same room as way larger when the movie wants you to realize that it's the whole world for the young kid. Amazing stuff.

Tickled (2016)

This is probably one of the most unexpected treats I've had recently. A New Zealand journalist stumbles across a Facebook page for competitive endurance tickling and decides to investigate.
It starts out how you would expect and very quickly takes a dark and horrible turn and gets worse as it goes along.

I love Deadpool and that movie was great(it should be right after Antman, or maybe first class should be on the bottom). But I my enjoyment of Deadpool is his 4th wall breaking ability to mock super hero tropes while also hanging out with deadly serious characters like Wolverine. The traditional narrative of the Deadpool movie was enjoyable, but it just left me wanting him to do commentary across all the marvel movies.

Basically I want Deadpool MST 3K and every time I see him on camera, I am reminded that it won't happen. Also that new movie looks...just (chef's kiss)

I thought Black Panther was just an awful movie period. Bunch of nonsense action with bad music/noise. I'd rate it probably top 3 worst Marvel movie I've seen, with Iron Man 2 (just bad) and Thor: Ragnarok (fun but bad).

Just saw Black Panther, the movie was dope. Everyone’s fit was fire, fashion was off the hook in that film.

I just wish Marvel could come up with villains that aren't "bad guys with the hero's suit".

It is a well wore trope of super heroes stories. Though in black panther, they really under played the suit. It just seemed like cool armor.

I would rate Dr. Strange as among the best Marvel movies to date. It has one of the most impressive cast that made their name in serious drama and worked well here: Benedict Cumberbatch, Tilda Swinton, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Mads Mikkelsen, Rachel McAdams. And the special effects were top-notch.
My Marvel best list: Dr. Strange, XMen (original), Deadpool, Iron Man (original)

I saw Phantom Thread with my wife and we really were dissapointed in it. There is no reason why would anyone want to make a boring movie like this. I give it a 3 out of 10.

We also saw The Shape of Water which we didnt enjoy as well. so 5/10.

I saw Red Sparrow with a friend, if you want to see jeniffer lawrence naked then yeah go see it other than that dont expect alot. still id give it a 6/10 just for jennifer haha.

we also saw 15:17 to paris I believe was the title. didnt expect much and even told my friend i didnt want to see it but eventually we went on and saw it and i really liked it. still 7/10 tho.

Three billboards was really nice so 8/10 there.

black panther was ok too 7.5/10.

i also saw Lino with my daughter it was a disaster, 2/10 and we also saw Early man, again a 3/10. Ferdinand was really good as well as Coco 9/10 for each.
Terran in particular is a notoriously strong race for a no brain skillhand bot style.

The Shape of Water

Excellent movie. Del Toro keeps impressing me with how well designed his characters are. They feel like real people. Also, I'm amazed at his technique at times. One short scene of a character putting something into the fridge tells you more about him than some other movies manage to do in 30 minutes of exposition.
Time is precious. Waste it wisely.

^^ hated this

it's bits of Beauty and the Beast, Little Mermaid, Creature from the Black Lagoon, and Turtle Diary, all wrapped up in a steam punkish (but 1950s instead of Victorian) package, with some stupid jokes, a really bad bad guy, a bunch of Russian spies who say things like "surf and turf!" a couple of musical segments (!?), a lonely, middle-aged gay sidekick, and, natch, some gratuitous sex and female nudity. i know the reviews have been generally favorable, but I thought it was absolutely awful.

derivative (is there a single original element anywhere in the film?) and predictable (anyone not seeing exactly where this movie is heading is just exactly dumb enough to nominate it for all those fucking Oscars)

Well, part of the charm of this movie is the fact that it's a simple story with clearly defined "bad guys" and "good guys". I don't think it's intent was ever to surprise anyone. From a technical standpoint though this movie is fucking amazing.

The Shape of Water

I thought i should check this one out after the oscars and so i did.
First off: One has to look at this movie as some form of fairytale otherwise the plot doesn't make much sense.
We follow a mute lady who works as a cleaning power at some secret US labatory. One day a new test object arrives, the monster, our main character elisa finds it, is fascinated by it and vists it more often and ultimately falls in love with it.
There is also a sideplot going on which creates the drama.
Visually this movie is amazing, i can understand why it won the oscar for set design (even though bladerunner would have been my favorite there), our main character is charming, the plot is ok. The acting performances are fine, nothing outstanding though. As i said at the beginning, you really have to look at this as some kind of fairytale to really appreciate it, it's definitely executed like one though (the story even starts with a narrator).
It has its own charm, reminds me a little bit of amélie fused with del toro's pan's labyrinth. Sadly both mentioned movies are imo better, do more with the stylistic choice and therefore create more of that magical feeling (the music in shape of water does help though, it's definitely magical).

I think it was a good movie, would definitely recommend checking it out but i don't understand the hype around it.

7.5/10

Annihilation is next on the list for the P6 household, but Shape of Water is after that. I’m in the mood for a painstakingly crafted simple story.
