Com was just a good looking movie that transported the feeling of these end times but before they sucumb to total anarchy really well.

Seriously, whats to hate about it?

Farv have you ever rated CoM vs. Handmaiden's Tale?

My wife got me started on the latter and thematically I was surprised at the overlap not knowing the actual plot.

Which scene specifically were you thinking of for CoM as well? Literally the only stand out scene to me was when + Show Spoiler +
The baby is born and he walks out of the building
, apart from that all I remember is Michael Caine looking like Brent Spiner in Independence Day.

Yeah that scene is the one that sticks in my head the most. I haven't seen any of The Handmaid's Tale, only read it. Good book.

I just didn't like the way CoM was shot, though I realize I'm likely in the minority given appreciation for the film.

yeah, i think the "roving" camera in that long tracking shot and at other points in the film is entirely on purpose in order to break the identification with the protagonist's pov. by showing us things the protagonist doesn't see we focus more on the world the characters inhabit i.e. it pushes the background into the foreground for a moment - i think this is just Cuaron's way of showing us how he wants us to watch the film. just my two cents.

You should give it a look, I could send you a free trial thing on hulu if you're interested. I've been digging it.

I just remember back in the day CoM was one of those runaway success movies, I was actually working at blockbuster when that came out. Got to rent the DVD a week early. Hella perks.

recent viewing:

A Serious Man (2009)
very interesting take on the coming of age tale. skewed so as to focus on the experience of the father, the film winds up being more of an apology for childhood innocence then a eulogy over the loss of it. overall, a perfectly executed film colored by seasoned stage and character actors.

Enter the Void (2009)
this, along with Irreversible and I Stand Alone are among the most vapid films i've ever seen. you have to sit there and be spoon fed the uninteresting moral of "fascism/violence/what have you is bad" while the director gets their rocks off with the most indulgent visuals and stylistic tropes they can muster. neutered, "look at me" cinema lacking in any redeeming value.

A beautiful story which gripped me from start to finish. Breathtakingly beautiful locations and cinematography , a slower but gripping and fulfilling story and great character interactions. This definitely was worth a watch.

except it was overlong because of unnecessarily lengthy fight scenes and deleteriously vulgarized emancipatory and black liberation discourse

What did you expect from a Marvel blockbuster? A nuanced, thorough historical exploration of...anything? Coogler did the best with the limits established for him.

with great power comes great responsibility. i don't think he did the "best" he could have. he did a fine job, sure, but let's not oversell it. an interesting villain with somewhat confusing motivations, implausibly mercurial reactions (is he a coldblooded psychopathic killer or a sensitive soul?), and oppressive imperialist impulses. overt political themes. it has some strong suits.

its the best marvel movie, sure, but lets not oversell it. its still a marvel movie.

Someone hates films about disenfranchised people seeking to establish themselves and the diaspora of their people. Color me completely not impressed. You didn't like the overtly black (American and African) tones. Noted. Maybe we should stick to white only films that subtly glosses over history and paints the white population in a bright light because...why?

Black Panther was entertaining, and went by quickly for a 2 hour+ movie, but merely slightly above average for an action film in terms of graphics, plot, dialogue, acting, etc.

He refused to give the movie it's due. And his comment was way off base. Just enjoy the film or don't. We know what the film is and who made it. It was a surprise it got made at all. The topics raise in it were inevitable. There was no reason to be an artistic film snob towards the movie and make those comments.

I'll him and anyone else out on it.

Actually, his first response was pretty dismissive of the merits of the movie and what it accomplished, despite being branded a Marvel movie.

Deletorious black liberation? It's obvious he never read a BP comic. Or did any research into the character before the movie came out. If you wanna high-brow the movie, then talk about the technical aspects of it and leave the social commentary at home. Simple.

I'm not riding the movies dick either, just giving a good movie it's due.

its OK to have different opinions regarding a single film. can we argue or discuss things amicably? isn't this a discussion forum?

i said it was the best marvel film. you know, better than all those white only marvel films.

i did like the overt political themes. the other marvel movies are only political insofar as they reinforce a bland american exceptionalism that polices and safeguards the existing order.

i did not like that many of the key moments in the film come off more as extremist black versions of neoimperialism rather than any truly radical liberatory vision, and that, more importantly, most of its viewers probably can't even tell the difference.

I feel compelled to say that Black Panther was not made for me, and that's fine. I'm glad that people really identify with the character and love how it was represented in this film, especially in the context of Wakanda, which is undoubtedly a very cool setting.

That said, the film was definitely nowhere near perfect. The script was weak overall, especially for Jordan's Killmonger, and it falls into the trap of having a large-scale fight solely for its own sake, which dilutes the strongest part of the film's conflict (the differences in approach between Killmonger and T'Challa that should have been focused more) with a bunch of side characters who don't have clear enough ideological positions to be engaging as enemies. Really, the film was strong until the third act and then became predictable and boring.

There's obviously no harm in enjoying this film despite these flaws, but there's quite a bit of harm in accusing anyone who points them out as being someone who "hates films about disenfranchised people". It's probably the best Marvel movie, but that bar isn't especially high.
