The action is incredibly well directed and the visuals are never anything less then top notch. Keep an eye out for the dragon and the magic scenes.

You've got to be kidding me. That movie is unwatchable. "Brights?" That stupid quote at the beginning:

“Only a Bright can control the Power of the Wand”
- Chapter 7, Verse 15 of The Great Prophecy

The script is offensively generic. It's everything that's wrong with movies. I would literally rather watch paint dry than watch more than the 10 fast-forwarded minutes I watched to get a sense of just how insultingly formulaic and stupid the movie is.

Yeah I can't really judge because I haven't seen it all. I switched it off after 20 minutes because it was absolutely shit.

Its a fun movie with cool special effects and will smith. Its the good parts of a movie without any of the crappy filler of it pretending to be something else. Its got good action scenes that are contained and a story that follows a steady path throughout the runtime.

I'm sorry if its not an arthouse examination of the human psyche or another rehash of an idea people have been kicking around for hundreds of years. Its an original story that takes just enough from a few world to allow the plot to flow naturaly.

I mean its training day in a fantasey world. in LA. Thats literally the opposite of generic.

Oh come on. A thin, insultingly shallow racial allegory laid over a plot about a tired cop (who is going to retire in five years for his pension!) paired up with the new guy is not an original story. It's just the laziest mashup of a cop film with the most generic fantasy setting you could imagine. Kindergarten pastiche.

"Uhhh, what should we call our magical macguffin? How about 'the wand?'"

It blows my mind that you are actually shading "examinations of the human psyche" in favor of "the good parts of a movie," like "cool special effects" and "good action scenes." The reason 80% of the Marvel films are completely unwatchable is because they are just an endless series of zero-stakes action scenes. We are a generation inundated in special effects-laden action scenes. We've seen thousands by now, either in the hundreds of movies you've watched in your life, or in the thousands of hours of video games you've played. They are boring as shit, and it's indefensible to write such a lazy script just to showcase more special effects pablum.

It also seems like Will Smith is actively trying to destroy his career. What's the last good movie he made? Pursuit of Happyness?

Basically it's like eating a cupcake. Nothing wrong with it every once and a while. But it will turn your brain/body to mush if you are eating them every day.

The Master

The second to last PTA movie i still have/had to watch and it's definitely up there with Magnolia/There will be blood.
I don't wanna repeat the same things over and over again, but yes this movie looks beautiful, the performances are phenomenal (srsly joaquin phoenix plays his heart out), yada yada yada.
We follow phoenix' character Freddie who is a ww2 veteran on his way back into a normal life. He has alcohol problems and his relationship to women is problematic as well. One day he meets Lancaster Dodd 'the master', who is the leader of the cult "the cause". The main focus of the movie is how these two men see each other, interact each other and shape each other. The pace is pretty slow but i never got bored because there is so much going on in each scene still. Just watch it if you like good filmmaking :D

9.5+/10

Inherent Vice

Also a PTA movie, this time it's an adaption of a novel written by Thoman Pynchon. I will say that i didn't read the book but might do so now that i watched the movie. I obviously cannot compare them now, but a movie should be able to stand on its own anyway. With that being said this is my least favorite PTA movie to date. It's basically about a hippie private detective who gets a case by his ex girlfriend. Now he tries to solve that one, gets new ones and gets deeper and deeper involved in things he probably would have rather not be a part of.
The movie is extremely confusing, a lot of plot threads don't go anywhere really, you basically feel like you are high while watching this one (which is definitely designed to be that way, it plays in the 70s after all :D) The problem i have with this is that it makes for a weird viewing experience, it being a detective story also means we really mostly get a lot of talkign between our main character and people who give him new hints. It's visually still on a high level, but not as great as his other work, the acting is still great though for sure (our main character Larry is played by Joaquin Phoenix).
I might need to watch it again to maybe have a better idea, but right now it's good but not great like the rest.

7.5/10

Punch-Drunk Love

This movie features Adam Sandler and it might just be the only good/great movie he was ever part of. A PTA one obviously. We follow Sandler's character Barry who has a little company selling special toilet plungers. He is a lonely, depressed man and the only "help" (which isn't really useful one sadly) he gets is from his sisters, the problem being that they rather increase the pressure on him. This is a love story, a very weird love story. PTA has a special sense of humor and this one is definitely the closest to a comedy. While we spectate Barry on his path a lot of unlikely, whimsical events happen and this makes the movie. Adam Sandler gives a strong performance (not on the level of other main characers of PTA movies obviously, but still really good) and the usual PTA qualities shine here as well. The runtime is about 90 minutes which is the shortest one, but for the story being told it's perfect. So if you are tired of the usual love comedy trash, just watch this one because it's actually pretty great.

8-8.5/10

I just watched David Lynch's Dune for the first time in 15-20 years. Christ, that movie is a fucking disaster. To the extent that it was ever any good, it has not aged well. The aesthetic still cool, but whoever wrote the script needs to be drawn and quartered --- twice.

what's with all the Dune hate? personally i think the Lynch cut (i.e. the original theatrical version) works well as a movie, but even disregarding that it has some nice touches at least (heart plugs, cat milking). underrated imo, but still just okay.

just avoid the awful 3hr long "directors cut" version.

Plus synthpop and longing looks from damsel in distress, lmao

Still a pretty entertaining film IMO

It was also enough to inspire Baby Driver, which I really need to watch!

Watching Joaquin Phoenix in The Master is not a pleasant experience. It's like being trapped at a party, forced to make inane conversation with people you disdain, while Hoffman, the only person you thought you liked, is for some unknown reason off in the corner seeming to enjoy being the center of all the fools' attention. Easily my least favorite of those films.

It's a meet-cute romantic comedy, except the guy is an autistic hitman and the colors are cranked up to maximum contrast. What's not to love?

Children of Men (2006)

i have a horrible feeling that the world Cuarón depicts so stunningly in this film (the attention to detail is simply staggering) is not too far away and i will continue to insist that this is one of the very best movies of the last 20 or so years, especially considering that it is really a Hollywood film.

the technical artistry in the photography, design, and editing is incredible, yet so transparent in service of the story.

I disagree wholeheartedly, I think the cinematography in Children of Men basically ruins the film. There are numerous scenes where the shot and perspective used are so at odds with the meat of what is taking place that one can only assume that the director thought to himself, "ooh, I saw someone do this neat pan before, let me try it out."

some good points here www.nyfa.edu and here sensesofcinema.com i think regarding the cinematography, perhaps they might give you a different perspective.

for me the film is wound so tight from the first frame that i barely notice the technical achievements by the camera and editing teams anyway.

Farv have you ever rated CoM vs. Handmaiden's Tale?

My wife got me started on the latter and thematically I was surprised at the overlap not knowing the actual plot.

Which scene specifically were you thinking of for CoM as well? Literally the only stand out scene to me was when + Show Spoiler +
The baby is born and he walks out of the building
, apart from that all I remember is Michael Caine looking like Brent Spiner in Independence Day.
