My girlfriend hated it, for example, but she didn't get any of the references. What were the impressive references? I just think it's like a "look at us we are so clever having a kids movie reference an old classic" and build its plot from well-used sci-fi tropes, and somehow that makes it transcend being a simple movie for kids? It's like, I hate the attitude of a movie winking at me, trying to make some pandering reference that seems to delight so many people. Just make a good movie with a good story that's tastefully done instead (and I'm not saying it's a bad movie, but it just seemed like the actual story was very childish and instead it tries to appeal by being so overly cute, basically exploiting that).

That movie creeped me out to high hell when I was a kid. It opens up so bright and lush, but as the movie goes on everything turns to demons and creepy oversized ladies and just...stuff I can't describe.

Personnally, in terms of animation movies, early Disneys=Spirited away>other Miyazaki>=Pixar. And there are other stuff outside of that, even if I'm not an expert. The King and the Mocking Bird is amazing for instance.

The Lion King is highly annoying imo, but is the first movie I saw in theaters, so I have to save it :D Also not an animated movie, but Mary Poppins is a wonderful musical ![]()

Dumbo and Alice are not quite as good, but are original enough that they deserve to be remembered (seriously, psychedelic stuff in 1941, talk about being in advance on its time !). I was shocked at how enjoyable that movie is.There is so much to that movie that would totally be meaningless to a kid but is hilarious and/or resonating to adults. Not to mention it's just superbly well done in every way. Everyone should watch it again.

Also I was blown away at how the special effects look actually really decent, it's very impressive imo. And Julie Andrews <3

Not that Pixar does bad movies, on the contrary, but neither they nor Miyazaki are the first to make smart animation flicks. And while ZapRoffo might be a bit harsh, he is making good points. Plus with Spirited Away, Only Yesterday and Howl's Moving Castle they are by far the best animation studio. Early Disneys can be impressive, but they really don't compare with Ghibli. I agree about Pixar though.

For all the good thing that was said about this movie I was quite disappointed. During watching the movie I always got the feeling that Swoff was distant from his comrades. They are loud and energetic, while he is quiet and distant. We never see him socializing with his comrades. But then suddenly he is "one of them" while he clearly isn't. This leads to the problem that I had trouble getting into the movie because it looks like we are watching a watcher of the war instead of the war. This leads to the problem that "Jarhead" clearly is an Anti-war movie and never tries to hide it. Instead it rubs it into your face. 5/10

After I submitted the post I thought I should have talked about the positive parts too. The photography is good. And there are scenes that do have a strong impact, like the marines (mindlessly) singing the ride of the Valkyries, the woman sending her husband a porn of herself, the highway of death etc. It's just that I felt they are not properly connected and thus that I needed to justify the 5/10
