So apparently the Wolverine isn't terrible. Has anyone seen it and can give their spoiler free impression?
|
I just saw it Plansix.
I'd give it a 6.5/10 maybe a 7/10 (which on my mark a 7 means it was worth watching at theatres for full price, 5-7 is should watch but probably not in theatres--try to watch on dvd or cheap theatres, and below means ugh why did i even bother).
Overall it was good for action and japanese themed stuff, but the story was bad, the bad guys were pretty bad, and a lot of it was predictable. Spoilers below:
+ Show Spoiler + Pros: -Wolverine movie, Jackman still doing a good job -Japanese heavily themed, very cool to see the japanese land/city scapes -Ninjas and Samurais! -Fight scenes were pretty awesome, especially one that takes place on TOP of a bullet train. -Personal preference here, but the main love interest for this movie, is a small build asian woman, not oversexualized, not huge breasted, etc. It's a nice change from your standard hollywood bombshells -Post Credit preview scene is fucking awesome.
Cons: -Story is laughably bad. See below - Promises never to hurt anyone ever again, but goes apeshit over a bear? - Is constantly sulky throughout movie, in a bad way too. just meh - Spend < 1 day with main love interest, who is led to believe a truly traditional Japanese woman, hyper conservative, wants to bring honor to her father, etc etc. Suddenly wants to have sex and is in love with the Hairy Brutish Canadian man -Villain is somewhat predictable and is somewhat spoilered if you pay close attention -Main super villain girl, is easily forgettable. She's... a viper? wait no she's a doctor, wait no, she somehow can use her viper powers to suppress wolverine's healing powers by placing a bug in his chest? WHAT. -Super villain girl in mid battle, chooses to just tear off her skin for no apparent reason. She wasn't burned, or cut, or had acid sprayed on her or anything, no, just fell a few floors, wolverine + other bad guy still duking it out, but she decides, now's a good time to rip off skin and show off CGI affect, to discover what she really looks like underneath. (exactly the same except now bald? what?) -Main villain has billions of dollars, literally explained as richest/most powerful company in japan, and he chooses to invest it in stealing wolverine's powers using an armored suit. despite other movies like xmen origins showing you can apparently just steal blood/dna from other mutants, and combine them to make Deadpool, so why did you need to take him alive? why not just send Yukio to take some DNA from him. Weird. Mind you xmen origins takes place at least 10 years or so before this movie, so cmon, you're telling me you have that much money/research and this was all you came up with? -Jean Grey/Femke Jansen exists to show his torment, but coincidentally she can only appear half breasted and in a nighty every scene (i guess to make up for the conservative flat chested asian woman who isn't hot enough to western audiences?) -Final fight scene, apparently grabbing a huge sword with two hands, activates a heating mechanism in an adamantium sword? WHAT. the robot did it with 1 hand? wait what. i'm confused. -Post Credit Scene leaves you further wondering, wtf how is he still the same?
Summary - watch for cool japanese stuff, and action. Don't go for story or your head will hurt.
Also skip the 3d, i watched it and due to the dark nature of a lot of the fight scenes, it takes away more than it helps (couldn't make out what was happening).

i thought it was pretty good. it successfully recreated that feeling of insanity that you get from the later part of the original series. and it was in NO way bound to any previous evangelion stuff (like 2.0 or whatever the last movie was, which i didn't like but definately want to re-watch now). yeah it was refreshing, im really pleased about it
there were some/at least one "action thrillers" that i missed in the last 1-2 years. i can't remember the name of them, stuff like "The ...." . anyone know what im talking about? (stuff like 1 man is an action hero/assassin/being chased/save his daughter etc) . im sure you know
Taken?

I went and saw it last night in 3D (didnt want to go to see it in 3d cause I knew it was not worth it but our friend wanted to). I d give it a 6/10 or even a 5. girlfriends loved it tho (x-men fan). also i didnt like the ending.. (stay till the end after credits and ull know why)

I've wanted to see Red, but i've never got around to it. I went and saw Red 2 in theaters last night though! Was pretty damn fun. John Malkovich is fucking hilarious. I love the roles he plays, his anger outbreaks always seem so genuine. My one complaint is the movie was too long for its own good

No growth without assistance. No action without reaction. No desire without control. Real skill comes without effort.

If you want a really good action thriller from last year check out Looper.

![[image loading]](http://img.sceper.ws/images/vhCsJ.jpg) Mud 7.5/10 It's a solid, straight-forward drama flick. The rural arkansas backdrop was well shot and I thought Matthew McConaughey nailed his role. The two child actors were surprisingly good as well. I enjoyed the scenes when they were visiting Mud (name of McConaughey's character) in the island. The dialogue of their first encounter really stands out to me. The chemistry between Ellis and Mud also felt genuine. I guess my only qualm is with Reese Witherspoon and the entire high school romance bit (though it was necessary for Ellis's actions later on). The ending was nice but + Show Spoiler +I thought it would've been better if it wasn't so explicit with the fact that Mud survived.

Was highly unimpressed. Went into it expecting a 5/10 movie and got a 5.5/10 movie. It just felt off-paced, and I felt probably should of happened before the first X-Men movie. Was severely disappointed at the Silver Samurai mecha stand-in to the real person.
High point of the movie was definitely Mariko's fashion sense. Girl had style.

Noroi the Curse (for the 3rd time). Definitely one of my all time fav. horror movies. I still get the creeps watching it.

Toy Story 3 I went in with the mindset that I could never enjoy it more than I enjoyed the original Toy Story as a child, but I loved it. Obviously children are going to enjoy it, and adults will enjoy the nostalgia, but it also stands on it's own as a legitamately good film On that note, any Pixar movie haha. Too true. Spirited Away is jaw dropping.

I actually sort of hate Pixar for exactly this reason. Their movies are way too self-consciously crowd pleasing and pandering, although they have done good work. Toy Story will always be a classic. But Wall-E, for example, annoyed the hell out of me

I fell asleep during Walle when saw it with girlfriend, for like at least 30 min of it. She was not amused... I actually liked what I remember, must be really tired that day.
|
Wall-E is amazing, but it is improved immeasurably if you actually get the references. Some of them are quite obscure, but i loved geeking out at it. My girlfriend hated it, for example, but she didn't get any of the references.

Saw Pacific Rim yesterday. If you like giant robots punching things with just enough of a plotline to back it up, this is your movie. Movie was done really well. Only gripe with it was that you only really got to see the main robot fight. All the other ones died too quickly.

OK I just saw The Purge

Horrible stupid piece of shit movie... Below is a user submitted review from IMDB and it contains pretty much every thought in my head.
FYI it does contain spoilers. + Show Spoiler +56 out of 67 people found the following review useful:
"Because Moviegoers Love Stupid Characters!" 2/10 Author: joshwesselius from United States 8 June 2013 *** This review may contain spoilers ***
DIRECTOR: Good afternoon, sirs! I came in today because I was stoned out of my mind earlier and I thought of the best idea for a movie ever! STUDIO: Alright, we're listening! DIRECTOR: So, like, in the near future, the government will allow 12 hours of crime a year! Like, murder will be legal and stuff! STUDIO: Okay, cool! Why? DIRECTOR:Uh... well... because if people go crazy on one day, then they won't need to do any other crimes the rest of the year! Because all crimes are created by random murderous passions, right? ONLY SMART GUY IN THE ROOM: Why don't the rich people just leave the country? That's the worst idea I- STUDIO: That's so original! People will eat that up. And it can double as a shallow social commentary! DIRECTOR: Uh... yeah... social commentary. I know what that is. Anyways, I got Lena Headey and Ethan Hawke to sign on! STUDIO: Fantastic! I bet you have lots of good dialogue to go between them.
DIRECTOR: Yeah... good dialogue... I know what that is. Anyways, the dad sells these security systems and the mom is... well... a mom, I guess. She can sulk a lot. And the older female kid can be a "typical" sulky teenager who is completely brain dead! She won't see anything suspicious when her much-older boyfriend, who her father disapproves of, sneaks into her house on the night murder is legal and says he's come to see her dad! And the also brain-dead boyfriend can botch his low-awaited parent killing by yelling out the dad's name before shooting! He'll die and then the shocked girlfriend will cry and then wander around the dark house by herself for no reason! ONLY SMART GUY IN THE ROOM: Uh, why would the boyfriend think she'd continue to date him after he killed her dad? That's an awful and unnecessary i- STUDIO: Perfect! It'll be tense when she wanders around because we really care about her character! Who else is there?
DIRECTOR: Well, there'll be another son with that awful super-long hair that's popular with horror movie boys nowadays! He'll be reclusive and play with creepy remote control dolls and he'll be the only moral character in the movie while being completely moronic! He will shut down the security system without letting his parents know in order to let a homeless guy in, and then he'll hide him, even though that means his whole family will die. And then, when he sees his sister about to go hide in the same spot, he won't yell out or warn her or anything! And then even later on, he'll hide in the basement and STILL let one of the invaders sneak up behind him, even though he has a gun! STUDIO: He sounds so lovable! What about the other characters? Are they dumb too? DIRECTOR: Oh yeah, super dumb! For example, the dad will have a complete 180 degree moral change halfway through the movie even though he sees the purge first hand, as if he didn't already know about it because he sells security systems for the purge! And then, he won't even untie the guy he's saving so he can help! He's completely retarded. And then there's the wife! Instead of hiding and having the advantage against the invaders, she can get up and wander around so she can be snuck up on! And then she won't shoot the guy who's threatening to kill her daughter because... well... she's stupid! And finally, the lead bad guy will try to kill the main character, but stops and leaves after giving him a flesh wound in the stomach! And then gets snuck up on, too!
STUDIO: That's wonderful! Movie goers are much more likely to cheer for stupid characters than intelligent ones! DIRECTOR: Oh and the invaders will wear masks like "The Strangers"! STUDIO: Great, that movie was terrifying! ONLY SMART GUY IN THE ROOM: No it wasn't, that movie was awf- DIRECTOR: I'll be sure to include the max amounts of clichés, too! Like, a bad guy will be ABOUT to kill a main character, but there'll be a dramatic pause before he does, and seconds before it happens, he'll get killed from behind! STUDIO: Genius! That should happen AT LEAST 4 times.
DIRECTOR: And for the icing on the cake, the invaders will be like cultists and recite prayer-like incantations dedicated to America and the "new founding fathers" because that's what would happen in real life, right? STUDIO: Perfect! Let's get this movie made. ONLY SMART GUY IN THE ROOM: **** this, I quit.
Not worth watching except maybe for "funny because stupid" moments. The idea is cool but should have had a much better execution.
When I was watching I thought that this purge happened worldwide. But it's just the states and that for me is the biggest plot hole ever... Just herp derp and transition into leave the country for a week. I mean even just standing on the canadian border with a big trollface would have worked... I don't know maybe I'm too harsh but damn... It wasn't good.
