Korean gang movie. It was really good. The scenes were tense and the movie started strong, building up even stronger later. I think the movie played out like a game of Go. Everyone was maneuvering like they were playing a game of Go. The bad news is that you need really good subtitles. I'm not going to listen to a dub even if I can find one, so be sure to download good srt subs on the internet. You may also have to rewatch things to get their full effect.
As far as crime films go, this one is not too bad. It's a bit of a toss-up between a Korean 'godfather' and 'my wife is a gangster' at times, with a more international focus and bigger/better parts for the female roles, it could have been very decent.

I just saw "Now you see me". Pretty good magic movie. Its similar to oceans eleven in the way that they both fool the "other side" and the audience until the end. The ending was pretty weak though. The Prestige is still better and The Illusionist on par with this one. But "Now you see me" is more action hollywood-ish then those others - if that makes sense.
warm bodies was a novel, different, thing but I didn't think it was really good? crazy stupid love is #1 some more recent faves are Hit & Run (available instantly on Netflix) and ofc the potentially overrated but still good silver linings playbook watching hit and run is a little fun because as a bonus, those two have actually been a couple IRL for quite a time.

Also The Shawshank Redemption is an awful movie, so that's a good beginning for the bottom of the list
what??
The internet's evaluation of Shawshank is for me one of the most curious phenomenon of collective hysteria I have ever encountered. Well, the whole IMDB list is bogus, but I think this one takes the cake. Sorry everyone who hates me
Btw I rewatched Letter to three wives, such a wonderful movie, Mankiewicz's reflexion on his characters is so tender and so profound. Laura Mae and Porter might be one of my favorite couple in the history of cinema.

Saying Shawshank Redemption is an awful movie because there are much better movies is like saying The Beatles are terrible artists because they aren't Mozart or Bach.
@ zoLoThe Conjuring was surprisingly good, but it got less scary as it went along.

But I'm not saying that. I'm saying it is downright terrible.

Well then you don't know what a good movie is. It's a little melodramatic and oscar baity, but its well filmed has great acting, and has a good story. You're basically trying to say its the same quality as a Lifetime movie.

I'm not sure you know either. It is incredibly academic and pompous, everything is underlined twice or thrice, it takes its viewers for a bunch of idiots (seriously, that voice over that tells absolutely everything that's going on is cringeworthy, we're just lacking subtitles to tell us when to smile and when to cry), it's completely manichean and moralizing, and you see everything coming from a mile.

Commonly, commonly, on some parts of the internet apprently yes. Stephanie Meyer and Dan Brown are also commonly thought as great writers in that sense you know.

Aww hell naw, them be fightin' words
I recently rewatched Delicatessen for probably the 5th time. It reminds me of a good collection of short stories connected through a frame narrative, only in movie form. And I enjoy listening to the French
I think a movie has to entertain. If it does that really good it is a really good movie. How people are entertained are subjective and thus movie quality is subjective. Same goes with books.

Which part of my posts annoy you exactly ?
You shouldn't trash people just because they like a certain movie. It seems you are on some sort of crusade to place your favorite "classic" movies on some sort of hilltop for everyone to see.
Since this thread is for movies you have recently seen... I watched Ruby Sparks last night, and it was awesome Ruby Sparks There was a lot going on in the movie and I loved how serious the film got, even though it was magic realism. The writing was very well done especially the scene where Paul shows Ruby that he created her. Not as good as a date movie as Before Sunrise, but its pretty close.

I disagree, but we already had this debate a few pages back, and I don't really want to start it again.

Well, good thing I am trashing a movie and not people. Also, I don't get how you got that impression. I think on the contrary, I'm more open to people criticizing movies I love than the average person in this thread. Funny how people would rather accuse me of being some sort of elitist rather than defend the movie...

Well I apologize, it seemed like it. You don't like Redemption's heavy handed approach, cool, but I don't think that justifies throwing out everything the movie does well. I wouldn't put it even in a top 100 films of all time list, however its still a good rousing film.
Awful movies are Adventures of Pluto Nash or Superbabies: Baby Geniuses 2 ok?
