6/10 I had hoped for more. Little disappointing but not completely terrible. Though the ending is annoying me the longer I think about it.

I was shown just that sequence by some awesome dude I forget the name of at a summer youth program when I was 14 and I've been in love with cinema ever since. Satyajit Ray's Charulata (1964) ![]() Finally being released in the US on bluray and DVD in about a month, I was lucky enough to see it on the big screen and out of all of Satyajit Ray's wonderful films I enjoy this one the most. A great story of betrayal, idealism, loneliness and love. It's centered around a lonely housewife, Charu, who is married to a rich idealistic man trying to run his own newspaper around 1880 India. Obsessed with his work and politics he neglects his wife who idles around the house all day, shown by a brilliant opening sequence as a gliding camera follows her from room to room. As there is an election in Britain and Charu's artistic brother-in-law comes to live with them, Charu and her husband get even more separated. The exquisite abstract ending, made up of exclusively still frames, is a perfect coda to the events of the movie. There also is a little Bollywood influence as singing plays a decent role in the film and one instance where a character breaks out into a full song. It's at times joyous and others melancholic, but ultimately disillusionment is pervasive.

![]() ![]() Triangle is sort of a thinking, thriller, suspense, drama thing. I could only think to compare it to primer or something like that as far as mindfuckery. It's hard to explain it without ruining the movie and probably sounds dumb with the basic description but I'll try anyways: Movie starts out with some sort of depressed looking chick who goes on a boat ride with some acquaintances. Storm happens boat flips. They come across a big ship and get on it. But they start to notice weird stuff and then the depressed chick is trying to figure it all out and going crazy ( or not?) at the same time. The setting is in florida but I dont think it has anything to do with the bermuda triangle which is kind of ironic. PS- if you want to watch a trailer, be careful because there is one that I watched that basically gave away the whole movie (a trailer for hollywood types or something). And be cautious of reading the comments too. This trailer is legit, but even this trailer gives away a little too much imho. 'Just watch it:

Korean gang movie. It was really good. The scenes were tense and the movie started strong, building up even stronger later. I think the movie played out like a game of Go. Everyone was maneuvering like they were playing a game of Go. The bad news is that you need really good subtitles. I'm not going to listen to a dub even if I can find one, so be sure to download good srt subs on the internet. You may also have to rewatch things to get their full effect.

The 3rd act was especially...well not ideal. But yeah if you consider the entire breadth of Pitt's career, WWZ is an odd addition. Saw Conjuring tonight. Another solid horror film by Wan, but not without some flaws - flaws that were also evident in Insidious. While Insidious was constant, foreboding tension with pay-off, Conjuring paces it a bit more. In some sense, it can be more ideal. There were definitely elements I truly wish were fleshed out more. + Show Spoiler + Obviously Annabelle - that doll gave me the creeps. I also was not a fan of the way the 3rd act played out. Seemed like a 'sensible' option and yes, it made sense. It just wasn't scary. Period. You have such a great setup in the first two acts, I just felt that all that tension and build-up ended up being wasted. But maybe I'm being too hard on it. It's definitely a better film than Sinister, but I don't think this is as strong as Insidious (even with the faults that Insidious had). Either you're a Wan fan or not...so if you didn't like Insidious, I don't think you'll like the Conjuring either. But it's a solid horror film, released at an odd time (middle of the summer). In the end, it's a solid addition and a good horror fix.

![]() James Wan's "The Conjuring" is one of the best horror movies I've seen in some time. Wan showed how powerful a scene can be without the use of tiresome and annoying jump scares followed by an obnoxious orchestra sting. It is a testament to how skilled of a director he is by demonstrating how you can scare the viewer simply with the use of the right cinematography to create a dreadful atmosphere and mood for the rest of the movie. Each scare had a nice buildup to it. I cannot think of one scare that was just put into the movie in order to keep the viewer's attention. Each scene had an impact that helped progress the movie. The movie isn't anything inventive since it had some typical horror movie tropes, but I found the execution of the scares well done nonetheless. I give "The Conjuring" an 8.5/10 and I think the ratings the movie has gotten is quite justified across the board (Rotten Tomatoes, IMDB, etc).

![]() The only really notable thing about this movie is that Salma Hayek is extremely hot for being in her mid forties. The last fight scene was pretty well done, though. Elite Squad (2007) - 8.5/10 ![]() Wagner Moura is incredible in this. The only issue I really had with this is that the pacing feels off at times with all the car part stuff. I mean, I get that it needs to show the corruption and issues with the system, but it just felt too drawn out at times. Elite Squad: The Enemy Within (2010) - 9.0/10 ![]() Watch this movie.
