That was my first though. He had way too high of expectations going into a movie made to be funny hoping it was going to be some life changing experience. Like what?
To sum it up real quick: There's this high security prison in outer space, where the worst of the worst criminals have to go. They're have to "sleep"(it's more like a coma), and they're all losing their minds because of that.
So there's the presidents daughter who's worried about the health of the prisoners, she flies to the prison, and starts talking with a prisoner. But can free himself, kills couple of guys and frees his buddies as well.
The daughter survives ofc, so the president sends 1 badass to the prison to fuck shit up.
The movie was pretty entertaining i have to say. I think 7/10 sounds about right.
It's pretty old and most of you've probably seen it aswell but:
The Pursuit of Happyness is probably my new favourite movie. I've never seen such compelling conveying of emotion in a film before. It manages to draw you in and make you experience it all with the struggling main characters(Will Smith and his son) like nothing I've ever seen before, happiness, sadness, anger, you name it.
The Perks of Being a Wallflower is one the best movies I've seen in recent times. I have to admit, at some point the movie felt without a certain path. Despite that, in the end it all came together, and I felt kinda sad for the main character. The ending is actually somewhat shocking, but it may be hard to understand at first.
This movie was nothing groundbreaking or anything, but overall it was pretty well done. I have to wonder if they had little confidence in the script or something, though. When you take Rachel Nichols and dress her up like this for almost the entire movie:
It kind of distracts from the rest of what's going on. If you want a decent thriller and a lot of cleavage, then I guess that this is the movie for you.
A coming-of-age story just after the sexual revolution of the 1960s set in London. A 15 year old gets his first job in a public bath house and becomes obsessed with an older coworker. A German and British co-production led by a Polish director, this film is a mix of different styles. Skolimowski's use of color though, bright and evocative to drab and dreary, is stand out aspect here. Out of the tons of coming-of-age (i.e. dealing with strong sexual urges) stories, I honestly cannot think of any better at the moment. Besides the ending which I'm still a little torn on, it's such a succinct and poetic tale. The image of the boy clutching onto a life-size cardboard cutout of the woman on the subway is something I'll never forget. It has it all, anxiety, pure joy and despair. Lost in the world of adults.
Looking for some good, quality movies that inspire/make you feel emotion/make you question your views on life. Preferably something in English and borderline recent. Something roughly along the lines of 'Into the Wild' or 'Leon: the professional' or the anime flick '5 centimeters per second'. (i know a lot of you are going 'lulz' right now at these "deep" choices)
Just tired of shitty action flicks, can't find anything to watch and I know you TL movie connoisseurs have something great for me. Thx.

Maybe try Jacob's Ladder link for something a bit different

Winter’s Bone (2010), maybe? Jennifer Lawrence's first big role. She is incredible in it.
Why in the world would you recommend someone see Inland Empire before Mulholland Drive? You REALLY need to know what you are getting into before seeing Inland Empire.

That's actually completely true, i just saw some Lynch in my DVD collection and thought to myself "what's my favorite Lynch movie?"

You should try some of Richard Linklater's films IMO. Before Sunrise, and Waking Life, maybe Slacker although that one is really experimental, maybe subUrbia although that one is really soul killing if you are prone to depression and if you aren't you probably think it's a terrible slog. One of my favorite directors...he really knows how to use dialogue to convey to get you into an existential pondering state.
Lets see, what else can I recommend in this vein: Children of Men - one of the best films of the past decade, just absolutely killer human sci-fi Blue Valentine - a riveting relationship drama that hits really freaking hard Exit Through the Gift Shop - a pretty brilliantly constructed thing The Truman Show - it's not necessarily deep but boy does it suck you in and make you feel oh Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind for sure
Wakfu, french cartoon, so funny you will spend most the time laughing yourself to death, but also have a serious face during the plot changes...
i easily give this tv serie a 10/10 , its so beautiful, cute, hilarious and entertaining on a different level.. if you like Anime or cartoons, i highly recommend checking out Wakfu. theres 2 seasons, and a 3rd MAYBE in the making
heres the intro song,, its amazing..especially with the intro video..
I'm in the midst of trying to watch 365 movies in 365 days, and I should stress trying. This started in spring 2011...
Anyway, some recent shots:
The Rainmaker (1997) - Pretty bland Grisham film Hunger (2009) - Fassbender is great, and there's a shot that lasts like 20 minutes. 4/5. The Apostle (1997) - Duvall stars as a Pentecostal style preacher, pretty good. The Devil's Advocate - A lot better than I expected, Pacino's monologues actually kinda worked. The Way Back (2010) - Watched it for the settings as much as anything, but a real quality watch To End All Wars (2001) - About POWs in a Japanese camp. Had some moments but fairly meh. Mulholland Drive - Bloody beautiful
Yeah, thanks for the suggestions. Watched "pi" before going to sleep today. Not "emotional" per se but very intriguing and very unique. I have to say that I definitely enjoyed it. It's the kind of movie that gets you thinking.
Some of these I've already seen but there are another couple of titles that sound interesting that I'll likely check out. Going to try to watch something "heartbreaking" next I think.

Kontroll - This movie is not in English, but it is guaranteed good times, and sometimes you need to just man up and watch something with subtitles.
This is The End 8/10 Haven't laughed this much in a theater in quite some time. The humor is similar to Superbad but raunchier. Danny McBride and Michael Cera were great. The ending was too drawn out and halted whatever momentum there was, but the first 85% was hilarious. Just as a warning, you're going to see a great deal of + Show Spoiler +
Pretty much what I've come to expect from Ryuhei Kitamura: a shitty movie with a lot of fancy camera work and a fair amount of gore. To be fair, this was pretty good for a while. Then they decided that they wanted to have a stupid twist ending that doesn't explain a lot of things and really just feels lazy.
I saw Godfellas for the first time this week, which is in many ways a disgrace as I'm 21. It is a great movie, and I can imagine for it's time in the start of the 90s it is an amazing movie, which probably helped set up shows like The Sopranos (there's like 8 characters from Godfellas with large roles in The Sopranos (RIP Gandolfini).
Just watched Into Eternity: A Film for the Future by Michael Madsen ( imdb )
It is a documentary about radioactive waste storage in Finland. It might not sound amazing but really, it is. The concept of storing something for a period of time that is longer than recorded human history is in itself very thought provoking. Combined with great visuals of (mostly empty) facilities and tunnels creates a very eerie sci-fi vibe. Loved it!
