For those who don't know it, it's a Japanese masterpiece about a professional casketer that deals with his childhood problems while trying to find peace in the extra-ordinary job he's doing. In Japan, the process of encoffining is marked by a traditional ceremony where the casketer cleans the body, puts make-up on it in a poised and sober manner, and the film depicts this absolutely beautifully. How I see it, the film ends up being a sort of life haiku, and is breathtaking. + Show Spoiler +9/10 would watch again and recommend it to everyone and anyone. I saw this a while back and had high hopes, but I was disappointed. The story sounds interesting on paper, but it ended up feeling contrived and cliché. I was hoping for some good music with of all the cello business, but the (I assume) original soundtrack was rather dull and unimaginative (like all other asian "classical" music I have heard). They should have done a better job. It's not a bad movie per se, but definitely over-hyped. A weak 7/10 for me. Now that I've read your reply, I have to agree that the story was contrived and cliché. I don't want to risk spoiling for others, but it's true that the end was kind of forced, non-spontaneous. That being said, I found the music to be quite good; it was nice and simple (and not surprisingly, the composer of the music is Joe Hisaishi). All in all, I concede my previous rating and change it to an 8/10.

I guess it was bad enough that there was no suspense the entire time because you could forecast the entire movie within seconds. I'm not at all familiar with the book, but this film seemed like it was directed by a freshman in community college that's taking Sociology 101. The concept is supposed to shock or at least interest you, but it was boring.
The buildup was far too slow. It took forever for anything to happen, including several cut scenes of the mom being stalked. After the second cut, you're just like, "Okay, we get it, someone's gonna try something... you don't have to keep reminding us of something you just showed 2 minutes ago... So please, make something happen?"
The cult-like youth dressed in masks was suppose to dehumanize them, as the "dark side" of so-called human nature. But they were not very frightening and they just all looked like grown up children of the corn or whatever.
You know what this was? A bad 12-hour only mass homicidal-maniacs / Zombie film with no zombies.
The deaths were almost campy! Lots of people in the theatre were laughing during scenes that were unintentionally hilarious.
The acting was pretty bad, too.
Just watched this as well... holy fuck was it bad. On top of that, so many of the decisions were so infuriating and simply did not make sense.
+ Show Spoiler +First of all... a PURGE SECURITY SYSTEM KEY CODE should not be in the hands of your fucking creepy ass 12 yr old son. Then the "OMG I HATE YOU, YOU ARE TRYING TO SAVE US" just made absolutely no sense. Then they change their mind about 20 fucking times about whether or not they should sacrifice the guy. Then... Inexplicably...
"WE GON' FIGHT DEM"
(but we're not going to cut loose the guy we're fighting to protect, lulz)
Followed by:
"YOU KILLED MY HUSBAND AND EXPRESSED HATE TOWARDS ME WHILE TRYING TO KILL MY CHILDREN AND ME. YOU'LL LIKELY TRY TO KILL US AGAIN NEXT YEAR AS THIS IS AN ANNUAL EVENT, BUT I'M NOT GOING TO KILL YOU.... BECAUSE FUCK NEW 'MERICA DATS WHY!"
All of it was just so bad....

Olympus Has Fallen
US propaganda at its finest. Do not watch.
Oz the Great and Powerful
99% of this movie is green screen + CGI. With so much of it, why not make the entire movie in CGI I wonder, it would probably be better. Do not watch.
By the gods, Hollywood is spewing so much garbage lately it's horrifying.

Now You See Me
****MAJOR SPOILER**** Just coming home from the cineplex. Im entertained but theres too many holes and issues with this movie
Main character pretends to get beat and fooled throughout the film, only to reveal himself to be the mastermind behind everything wtf? Theres no indicator or clue or suspicious act that keep viewers guessing,
I & my friends were like "damn main character cant suck this bad, he must be something". Many other dudes could just show up and be like "hey Im the boss, I just pretend everything to fool you". That shows how random this twist is. It's just so poorly executed compared to the like of Usual Suspect.
The motif just doesn't make sense. It goes like this: - Dad got exposed by Thaddeus (read:cuz he sucked), he tried another trick, killed himself by a fucked up safe. - Ima avenge dad cuz Im mad that Thaddeus was better than him. - I plan some tricks and have my men do it but Thad once again exposes everything T_T - Too bad for you old man, my coup de grace is actually pretending to be a loser. Yes who needs magic in a magic movie, you just need good ACTING, literally.
The Eye actually seems like a promising subplot but again the explanation is too vague in the end. Maybe they just set up something for future sequel.
Lastly, the supporting female is just as terrible. The writer gives her some substances like being French, French accent, reading mysterious book, first time on duty etc. only for her to be completely irrelevant to the storyline. Her only role is kissing Dylan when hes (supposedly) defeated again.
Dont get me wrong, I enjoy every bit of this movie. It's just that many people hype it up and compare to the other two magic movies. For that matter, Illusionist/Prestige had better acting, writing, consistency and execution.
7.0/10 (Im being generous because it's about magic)

Jason Reitman's Young Adult (2011)
![[image loading]](http://rhysfilmreviews.files.wordpress.com/2012/06/young-adult-2011.jpg)
This is in my opinion by far Jason Reitman and Diablo Cody's (the writer) best work. By the end it gets so serious, emotional and depressing, I think calling it a black comedy would be putting it mildly. So much of their earlier work is annoyingly glib, but here so much more emphasis is given to the actor's gestures and space between the dialogue. Charlize Theron is of course amazing and the stand out, but Patrick Wilson and Patton Oswalt more than carry their own. Plus The Concept by Teenage Fanclub is a great song! Definitely one of the best Hollywood movies of the last 5 years.

Oh come on, Olympus wasn't that bad. It was basically Die Hard inside the White House. I thought it was fun, plus Gerard Butler in action movies is always great.
The entire scenario is literally impossible though. Especially post 9/11.

Berserk Golden Age Arc Part III : Descent
Yo I here to bring some attention to this action manga rework. It's the finale of the Berserk "golden age" in epic fashion! Its got high quality animation, and terrific Nipponese voice actors! A true hardening of the mind into the descent of terror!

Sure, the story is kinda unlikely to happen in reality, but it was really nice imagining that this would happen in reality. Just sad that + Show Spoiler + somehow won in the end. Those terrorists were so likeable because they acted so clever and just wanted to help poor Koreans.

The fact that it's based on a true story and all that doesn't really matter if it's not an enjoyable movie. A predictable movie that consists entirely of people acting stupid isn't enjoyable.
