Same here, but then again I don't know any other Korean directors :p Might add he's my favourite director, but then again I don't know any directors other than Kim Ki-Duk.
So after watching Bin Jip I watched Samaria, which I'd like to recommend, then Hwal (The bow), which is very good as well. Arirang I didn't like much, but perhaps it should be enjoyed as a poetic document instead of a film. Shigan (Time) is rather nice as well, a good commentary on Korean culture I think. Breath is very good too. His older films are somewhat hard to get hold of, haven't seen any of them. Really curious for Pieta, hope it'll be in the cinema here soon.
Don't read up on these films if you don't know them, watch them. Didn't divulge any story details for a reason.

One vote for 3-iron from me then. Nice and quiet, great style, interesting soundtrack. Hwal soundtrack is great as well.

Robot and Frank. This movie is in limited-release only, but if you get a chance, I highly recommend it. Well-made film which treats the audience intelligently. The basic premise is that an ex-con who is becoming progressively less-able to care for himself is given a robot caretaker ~ which he starts teaching to help him steal things again.

Monga.
Taiwanese mob film set in Taipei. I liked it and thought it was a really nice film although it had some flaws. I wish they would've expanded on some parts of the plot but if I would say anything more I would spoil it.
Overall, if you like chinese movies and like me think it sometime is difficult to find good stuff from the mainland I really recommend this one. It's not an action movie though but more of a gangster drama. Check it out!

Battle Royale
This movie had me on the edge of my seat, I found it both disturbing and stimulating.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0266308/
From the NYT:
Battle Royale, based on a novel by Koushun Takami and directed by Kinji Fukasaku, a prolific Japanese filmmaker who died in 2003, is shorter, less elaborate and far bloodier than Gary Ross’s adaptation of Suzanne Collins’s “Hunger Games,” and emphasizes pulp and melodrama over political allegory.
The rebellious, self-pitying, defiantly melodramatic spirit of youth mingles with a queasy adult sense of concern. What are we going to do with these kids? What are we doing to them? “Battle Royale,” a gaudy, gruesome comic book, tackles these questions with a verve that is both earnest and impish. Quentin Tarantino has called it one of his favorite movies.

I just watched this too, on a friend's recommendation (he refused to tell me anything about it). I wouldn't watch it again, but it was pretty enjoyable. Better than most of the similar movies I've seen, not quite as good as Shaun of the Dead.

![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/vCNgy.jpg) This is just really fun to watch. By far the best mission impossible. This movie puts any bourne or bond film to shame. Doesnt use cut every .3 second editing or the ever popular shake the fucking camera technique, so fuck you bourne 2 and 3. THIS IS THE SHIT. also the same director as the incredibles and ratatouille. also x2 that hallway scene is just kickass. go watch it.

Watched Snow White and the huntsman. Visually its very impressive but the story and characters left much to be desired...

I saw the avengers. It was good

Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai

Tons of style and atmosphere, not much story. Which is a formula I really like, a movie that doesn't obsess with intricate story details and twists but that forges a really strong identity for itself with its style, and I thought this was very good. As you would expect, the score from RZA is amazing.

eh? That's an interesting viewpoint to me. I think that it was a good movie, but it was a lot cheesier than Bond or Bourne. + Show Spoiler +When the old man could out-run the highly trained special agent in the sandstorm, or the missile isn't set to detonate until it's at pavement level... lots of ridiculous plot holes
However, I do agree that in terms of cinematography it was better than Bourne. The shaky camera adds nothing to the movie.

Soul Surfer
![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/tyr1x.jpg) Watched to check up on what my girl AnnaSophia Robb has been up to since she lit up the screen in Bridge to Terabithia (which was fantastic). This was not really a well-made movie at all, very TV movie-esque, but at the same time tolerable and hard to hate because it would be like hating cute kittens and it does seem like it got the spirit of the true story and of Bethany Hamilton pretty well, even if it's a simple telling and chokingly, cloyingly inspirational.
Midnight in Paris
![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/HL08d.jpg) The 1920's characters were a riot, so was the hilariously obnoxious Paul. The dramatic story and resonance is flimsy though especially for something where the tone is very wistful/romantic rather than outright comic. Didn't feel fully realized or fulfilling even though it was a cool trip.

Just wanted to post and say this thread is amazing. Gotten so many movie ideas from here. Thanks. Also a sleeper that turned out to be ok was "Another Earth". A little slow, but I quite liked it. Also "Extract" was funny
Also maybe this isn't the right thread but I'm having trouble remembering a movie I want to rewatch. Maybe some Help? The movie is a kinda comedy about this white guy who kinda looks like the two face guy in the newer batmans. The guys character either has his wife leave him or die at the start of the movie. He meets a lady thats a grocery store clerk in the local town. The movie is set in a small kinda empty desert town, I believe California. I remember the grocery store having like nothing in it. One of those towns with a white gang of kids. The guy gets tired of the gang and confronts them. Can't remember much else. Anyone know what this movie is?

Might need more to go on there...
Literally just finished Cabin in the Woods. It was by far the most original horror I've seen for a while. Still not as good as people make out, unfortunately, but well worth a watch.

Hitchcock night Shadow of a Doubt
![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/KIogo.jpg?1) Mostly this is pretty great, the two leads have great interaction and really carry it and the side characters are really colorful too, but there were a few illogicalities that sort of nag and make it seem less well crafted. + Show Spoiler +First, suddenly when the other suspect dies, instantly everyone is sure he was the one they were after and Uncle Charlie is now not suspect anymore to everyone except girl Charlie even though they were about to show his picture to witnesses? Also, the ending action climax was just inexplicably improbable and could have been done so much better and not be inexplicable as to how she turns the tables on him.
Rope
![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/oQm7Z.jpg) This is an interesting sort of chamber drama looking at the sort of Nietzschean superman idea and is very reminiscent of Crime and Punishment. Two young rich guys murder their friend just because they can and then have a party right after. Naturally the party gets suspenseful. The character development doesn't end up being that compelling though so it sort of doesn't have that great of a punch that you feel.

Haven't seen a Batman cartoon since Mask of the Phantasm back when I was just a kid. Stumbled across this and loved it.
