Watched alot the past few days so using spoilers here.
+ Show Spoiler +12 Monkeys - A convicted criminal in the future, wheres most of earths population was wiped out by a virus, tries to earn a pardon by going back in time and finding out the origins of the virus. Even though I had heard good things about this movie, I was pretty blown away by how much I liked it. Definitely one of the better Sci-Fi films out there.
+ Show Spoiler + The Avengers - Again, didn't expect this to be so good. The previous marvel movies have been pretty disappointing to me outside of Iron Man so I wasn't expecting much. Classic, good summer blockbuster movie right here that is full of great action scenes.
+ Show Spoiler + Safe House - This got mixed reviews on RT but I would say that this is one of the better movies out there is terms of CIA thrillers. Worth a watch if you are interested in that kinda stuff.
+ Show Spoiler + Hanna - I would agree with what I saw other people saying about it, its a pretty slow moving movie but the action scenes in it were fantastic.
+ Show Spoiler + Prometheus - I have mixed feelings about this. I feel like not enough was explained about the backstory of the other movies though (I heard Ridley Scott did this on purpose as he wanted it to be something new) so I didn't really feel satisfied. Hopefully the sequel will answer these questions.
+ Show Spoiler + The Dark Knight Rises - Found it to be a worthy conclusion to Nolans trilogy, even if I was a bit grated by Banes voice. Overall, I felt really satisfied by it, Nolan really did a great job. I can only hope that the next director who takes a crack at Batman can do them this well.

If only Shawshank was better than 50% of the films ever made... Damn, I think Shawshank is the best movie of all time Well, do you laugh at Twilight fans ? It's cliché, the obvious and unambitious plot is explained at length through lengthy monologues that don't bring anything except asserting what everybody has already understood, the directing is academic and flat, and repeatdly states the same thing through unusefully long shots, the plot is completely manichean, there isn't any sense of psychology nor any depth to the characters, and it's overly melodramatic. I can't understand the fascination for this stuff. It's not overly bad, but it lacks any distinctive quality. I think it tells a compelling story with an identifiable with character which is what a lot of people's main focus is in seeing movies, and I thought the ending stands out, it's pretty beautiful. Those are it's main strong points, so it's works really well as a populist kind of movie, and I can respect it cause I think it did those couple things well. Since the ending managed to move me I give it a lot of leeway. Artistically it's not otherwise interesting, that is true so I usually call it decent. I have trouble getting emotional when there are huge red flashing letters telling me I should be crying and a voice-over telling me the same. I'm not sure how it is compeling, it's entirely predictable and manichean. Who am I suppose to identify to ? The main character is completely perfect and shows very little emotion. Morgan Freeman's character ? It's a bit better but still unidimensional.
Please, a movie is allowed to have a despicable character or two without it invalidating its perspective cause it's manichean, the main thrust of the movie is not about his conflict with the warden, that's just a fact that exists. It's about crafting a life in a non-ideal situation and having an improbable hope for something better but doggedly pursuing it. Which is a narrative that people really identify with cause it's pretty universal, thus letting it say things about most of our lives; and it's not one that's defined by black and whites, it has that manner of introspection to it.
Also I wholly believe small moments of power can even exist without being part of a perfectly or even well crafted movie, which is how I can feel like the ending scene at the beach can really hit as an expressive moment even if you only knew an outline of his story or thought it was poorly told.
I saw this god awful underground horror movie called Psychopath, everything about it was shoddy and failing, but it still managed to create a moment that I thought was just pure perfect horror when a girl's (who we know has been murdered by a psychopath) sister has found the backwoods, ramshackle house where she was killed, explores around with growing foreboding, then happens on a room upstairs with blood smeared around. You can tell this is the moment where she goes from "doesn't feel right" to "dread and horror" and then we just zoom in on this fly buzzing around on the totally decrepit window and the permeating sickening feeling of barren ugliness is just so captured. Even though the sisters never even interact with each other and the relationship has 0 development. I gave it a 4/10 based just on that even though otherwise it was a 1/10 movie.

There's times when I want to watch a feel-good movie, performed by amazing actors, with a compelling story, with a great ending. So i watch Shawshank Redemption. If Shawshank disappoints you, then I truly feel for you, because 99.99999999% of movies must be pure crap to you. I really enjoyed Shawshank Redemption, and would recommend it to anyone. I don't get your criticism, there is nothing overtly wrong with anything you criticized, as long as the movie wasn't trying to portray something else. Some movies are just trying to tell a good story, not surprise you or be innovative.

"PPPS.: Did you know that turtles can breath through their anuses?"
"Mary and Max"
A story of a an overweight New York jew, debilitated by several psychological diseases, who becomes pen-pals with an eight-year-old girl from Australia, whose mother is an alcoholic and whose hideous face an everyday burden.
This might be the most depressing children's movie ever made. I was utterly miserable the entire time watching it. Music and narrative are superb, the graphical style is unique and awesome.
I'd give it an 8.5 out o 10. Having been quite high while watching it, I expected something to laugh, but far from it.

Watched expendables couple days backwards and it was pretty + Show Spoiler + as I expected after seeing few posters and seeing actors.
Fortunately I also watched gandhi just, and it was pretty immersing to say atleast. I liked it.

It's presented as a children's movie, but it's really much more of an adult's. Lots of discussion of depression and issues, not really something that would impact a child. I love this movie.

Watching "Battleship" at the moment and i can't finish it... I expected nothing but a stupid crappy action movie, but I'm afraid my brain might take permanent damage if i keep on watching.
+ Show Spoiler +I'm at the first personal alien contact scene atm and just lol... 100% stolen from Independence Day.
Everything is crap: The acting, the story, the pacing, camera work, the jokes, [endless list]... Even the effects are sub par. 200m$ for that? Well at least some people made 200m$.
There are movies which are so bad, they become funny again. This one is not even managing that. "Plan 9 From Outer Space" is a genius masterpiece of epic proportions compared to that. Now i'm even mad i wasted energy for it, posting in here.
IMDB rating 6.0, all hope is gone!

I recently saw the chinese version of What Women Want. It's a nice lighthearted movie that's good for big parties.
|
Saw Talladega Nights.
Pretty funny movie I guess....I was entertained at least. Like most comedy movies, probably better with buddies

Apocalypse Now: I used to think Platoon and Full Metal Jacket were THEE vietnam themed movies to watch. I think apocalypse now blew them both out of the water. If you enjoy thought provoking movies its very good. The film offered an interesting perspective on what war and fear is, and how they kind of blend with one another. A lot of "WTF" moments too, but overall a very good movie.
Breakfast at Tiffany's: Cause Audrey Hepburn. I never realized how gorgeous she is. Regarding the movie though, its a romantic comedy and is a bit sappy but that's to be expected with the genre. That said I can see why people regard it as a classic film. Overall it kind of forces you to rethink the idea of what "Love" means, and what it means to love somebody. With the genuinely funny nature of it I definitely recommend seeing it.

Safe 6/10 Pretty much a standard Statham movie, just 100% pure action and bad-assery

I never was a fan of Scarlett Johansson or Bill Murray. But after this movie, I definitely am. Their acting was so engaging and I felt like I could resonate so well off of their emotions. Very good movie and very good acting, I enjoyed it a lot.
8/10 would watch again.

There is a stunning experimental French New Wave film, La Jetée, that it's based on which I highly recommend. Totally different feel but it's devastatingly powerful.

Just watched it
+ Show Spoiler +12 Monkeys, still don't get the ending with the little boy, what a role does he play ?
|
@NexCa about 12 monkeys
+ Show Spoiler +the little boy is bruce willis at younger age. he saw himself shot during the timetravel. willis is having this dream/nightmare over and over again when he is in his "real" time. Btw: did you recognized the women the mad scientist was talking to at the very end?

Wasabi - French/Japanese movie. LOVE IT. Hillarious, serious, emotional. Jean Reno needs more movie time.

Snow White and the Huntsman
Terrible, by any standards. Kristen Stewart can't act if her life depended on it. Hemsworth was good in his role but he's plain bad as narrator. The entire movie had great potential which was completely wasted. Charlize was flawless though.
Dark Shadows
Was OK. It wasn't bad but it also wasn't particularly good.
Men In Black 3
Was much better than I expected. Way, way better than 2 and they actually gave characters some depth in this one. I liked it.
Cypher
An old film, but a good one. The overall sense of paranoia and reality questioning are great, drawing heavily from Philip K. Dick's works. I liked it a lot.

You know, I saw Snow White and the Huntsman and I have to say that although I agree that the acting was with that one exception seriously sub-par, the movie somehow still managed to be good, at least in my opinion, and in more than just a look-at-the-action sort of way.
Anyway, I just saw The Intouchables (NOT the movie about Al Capone), which was hilarious and poignant and maybe the best movie I've seen in a year.

Here are some of my thoughts on two movies I watched yesterday. No major spoilers in the spoilers btw.
Iron Sky + Show Spoiler + The movie was quite funny in its own way with a very cool unique concept. Though if you watched Stargate, this is nothing new. Though lots of the acting / scenes were quite horrible. Though it kinda worked out in the end. Love how they portrated the blonde nazi woman, and how it all ended up. Though I don't like the USA bashing / making fun of Palin obviously portrated in this movie. It's very disrespectful. Funniest part is when the North Korean guy speaks in the international council, way the best scene! (not to mention the Finn guy)
The Hunger Games. + Show Spoiler + Firstly, the movie is basically a more soft and acceptable version of the sick japanese movie Battle Royale mixed with a Stargate advanced civilization episode. And I dont think Battle Royale concept is very good for people to get mindblowned by. Because, if your not hardened down emotionally by killing and bloody voilence, this movie, even with the lower age limit (11y in norway) really messes with your head in a wierd way. It has an interesting love story though.
