I think in our modern age technology has evolved to become more addictive. The things that don't give us pleasure aren't used as much. Work was never meant to be fun, but doing it makes us happier in the long run.

The fact that it was a pilot with added scenes later on does not mean the two parts have nothing to do with each other. They work together. To me the added scenes are like a shift from a pleasant dream to a brutal nightmare.

Honestly, I don't know what to say.

There's nothing to say

No tears, only dreams now.

I'm really looking forward to seeing this, I've only heard good things about it.

I absolutely despise the movie. If you look back a couple of pages back of the thread, you'll find myself to be unable to contain the optimism and hype of welcoming the film into my life as various of posters have enticed me to. However speaking, I was taken into the nastiest ride that went far beyond my wildest imagination. The movie have utterly destroyed me emotionally and brought myself into physical sorrow and morose. The premise was set to be a coming of age story that I have envisioned. But before I would fully grasp about its settings and theme, the plot was already spiraling out control in an unbelievable, dark, and twisted turns. This has lead my mind to perpetually ponder on the deepest psyche of my existence. And I was simply caught in a despair of wishing to have never even visited the IMDB's movie recommendation page.

And for all the above intended reasons and purposes, I would to by all means grant this piece of 'disaster' from the director Darren Aronofsky the closest media to a perfect 10.

And as for my next warning, this movie:
couldn't hand a candle to the aforementioned film. Such a snoozefest.

Mulholland Drive is the greatest film I have seen. When I initially viewed it I wasn't sure what to make it of it, but for days I could not stop thinking about it. It is all at once a mystery, a romance, a satire and a horror film, while managing to blend it all with dream like quality. Naomi Watts also delivers one of the greatest performances of all time. A film like this is not about story but about the emotions.

Imo, it was prolonged too much. Yeah the acting by Mrs. Watts was fantastic and her appearance itself have attracted me to the piece if you know what I mean However I was sort of expecting it to be more drama oriented movie with intense situations and somewhat exploring the dark secrets of the 'drive'. But now that you've mentioned key words such as "mystery, romance, a satire and horror film", I can sort of come in terms with the absurd drowsiness.

JUST get something straight though:

So it is a movie about dual reality universe. One is about a rookie rising star and the other about a failed actress. And both of these surrealism reflects the life of one single central character. If this is was the premise and the message that David Lynch is trying to convey, then I feel that those two universes could be intertwined with more homogeneous substance instead of solely separating the acts.

There is no concrete explanation for what is going on and there shouldn't be. Lynch has never explained it and he shouldn't have to. Everyone's interpretation is correct. I have my own for the plot but it's not important as no matter what interpretation you have the details never all add up. All that really matters is that within it's running time it moves me, scares me, depresses me, and just hits on more emotional fronts than any other movie I've seen. It's essentially a dream, don't bother trying to put jigsaw pieces together (at least not the first time), just enjoy it.

While you're at it pretty much all of David Lynch's work is fantastic and you can see how it all led to Mulholland Drive. Do yourself a favour and check out all of it, Twin Peaks (maybe avoid Dune). Mulholland Drive is about middle of the road in it's weirdness. Inland Empire being the most challenging. Detractors of Lynch like to claim he's just fucking with people and can't do a straight up movie, but then there's The Elephant Man and The Straight Story to shut them up.

thats not a god damn excuse "oh its just a dream man so it fine" doesnt fucking work. these scenes have fucking ZERO to do with naomi watts character SHES THE MAIN SHIT. they dont affect her in any way or add any character development. shit zip. the hobo scene (6 minutes long) - random shootout in motel - (4 minutes) - Evil bad guys plotting (6 minutes) - producer meets creepy cowboy (4 minutes) - end stage song (2 minutes) plus like 3 others that i cant think of atm. if it was a series that had time to explore certain shit then yeah this would have been one hell of a tv show, but just clusterfucking it together with his trademark transitions its just a gorgeous film with no plot ---- see "gerry" or "last days" intersting films but putting them up with 8 1/2 citizen kane vertigo 2001 etcetc is flat out dumb. guy above posting on why requiem is bad is mostly right, but its certainly has some merits including a standout by ellen burystyn - but god is it repetitive. in fact we should make a list of the most overrated films of all time these two would be in my top twenty for sure. they are like the best movies ever when you are in middleschool until you watch you know actually good films.

I didn't claim it was all a dream. It all feels like a dream because that's the aesthetic it's going for but as I said before it's open to interpretation. Let's assume however it is all dream, what exactly is wrong with that? Let's also assume the first part of the film is the dream or a fantasy and the last third is reality, which seems to be the the thinking with most people. The scenes you seem to have a problem with are mostly with this force behind the scenes in Hollywood that try and control what's going on. It isn't hard to see how in reality this is what Watts' character is thinking about her own career. That she is being held back because some forces behind the scenes are trying to hold her back, that maybe the director was forced to choose a different girl instead of her for the lead role. The hobo throughout is a sign of the real world for her. He is something she knows she can't avoid but chooses to try and project herself in an idealized world where she is successful and talented. The comedic office assassination could be viewed as her fighting back against the Hollywood underbelly. The club Silencio sequence is her coming to terms that she cannot live in this fantasy world. I don't know what else you really need. Again though, this all matters little because that is not what this film is going for. The story is specific enough to let you understand the emotions and feelings involved while remaining vague enough to allow you project your own ideas and thoughts into it.

Why is it flat out dumb to hold this film is such high regard as the ones you mention? Do you believe only the classics should be viewed as the best of the medium? I could throw all kinds of criticisms towards the films you mention as well even though I like most of them. Is there some formula you have that can narrow down what a good film is? Let me know.

As for Requiem for a Dream, I don't understand all this hate for it either. Sure it's straight-forward with simple characters but that's needed for the story. It makes it easier to identify with them in their descent to hell. It is still a very good film and it's not simply just an anti-drug movie. It's more about their dreams and hopes then about the drugs themselves. It's got a strong visual style that reflects the MTV generation it's going after. It's well acted and delivers it's message very well. I can only watch the first half as I can't stand the punishment the characters and their dreams take after that.

Have you ever seen Redbelt? One of the best MMA-type movies around. Just take a look at one of the people playing in it:
John Machado is a 6th degree black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. He is a former Jiu-Jitsu world, national, and state champion, and a two-time Pan American Games Sambo champion. Machado also won many Judo tournaments as a black belt. He is also an aspiring actor, having appeared in numerous movie and television roles.

Also, back on topic. I've seen The Expendables 2 lately. It was so bad I won't even upload the poster here.
Time is precious. Waste it wisely.

Why don't you use imdb, look up one of those movies and skin through the "people who liked this also liked this" suggestion list. Otherwise you can look through the other movies those actors starred in. the star of ip man and flash point has a decent repertoire for example.

Just saw The Dark Knight Rises. My opinions below. Mild spoilers in this post.

I just felt that there was no suspension of disbelief (likely using the term wrong, but whatever I'm tired). Everything that Nolan had built up through the two previous movies got kind of thrown out of the window. Only two of the central characters (Bane and Batman) felt believable and genuine to themselves. Everyone else were either just put into the story to get it somewhere or didn't fit in whatsoever.

Christian Bale was as solid as ever. You watch a movie with this man and you know he's going to give a good performance.

Tom Hardy is far and away the star of the movie, even if Bane got sort of thrown aside when closing in on the end. Definitely on the same level as Heath Ledger's legendary performance as the Joker in TDK.

Anne Hathaway did a good job with what she was given (I despised Selina Kyle in this movie), but I just don't accept her as part of this universe. I'd rather seen a much more serious actress, although I'm not sure who I'd cast. Might edit if I come up with someone.I also felt that the character was poorly written and didn't agree with the decisions taken by her.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt (spelling?) is one of the actors I despise most in this world. I can't buy anything he says. I don't think he sells his character to me. That said, his character was complete dog shite that just appeared and helped everyone and knew everything that was needed at the perfect times. Should have been killed when he approaches <if you've seen the film, you probably know what scene I'm talking about*>. Not to mention that he was thrust into the main character's position for most of the movie and the stupid fucking reveal towards the end where we find out who he "really" is**.

Marion Cotillard was splendid throughout the film, although her character took a turn to the worse the last half hour or so*.

Morgan Freeman, Michael Caine and Gary Oldman all gave excellent performances, as expected.

The first half of the movie was great, even with some scenes being really stupid and unnecessary, but the second half didn't feel believable at all when held up with the previous films.

Not sure what else to say, but I want to point out that I think it's a good film. It's just easier to remember the parts you dislike, especially considering how much I hate the ending****. It's good, but should have been so much better.

*The Bridge scene.
**He's Robin.
***Suddenly she's Talia al Ghul and was the child that climbed out of hell.
****Oh, Bruce Wayne survived a nuclear explosion? Fuck everyone involved in the making of that scene.

Congrats if you made it through that rant, and have a nice day.

I think there is something you should know.

+ Show Spoiler +
It seems you didn't notice but it was mentioned in an earlier scene that Bruce actually fixed the autopilot of the vehicle. So no, Bruce Wayne didn't survive a nuclear explosion since he actually left the vehicle before the explosion outside of the camera. He obviously did this to let Batman die a hero so he could continue his life without Batman.

Some may be overrated, for sure, but they are still better than 99% of the other crap out there for the most part.

I'm really impressed by your use of statistics. If only Shawshank was better than 50% of the films ever made...

Damn, I think Shawshank is the best movie of all time

Well, do you laugh at Twilight fans ?
It's cliché, the obvious and unambitious plot is explained at length through lengthy monologues that don't bring anything except asserting what everybody has already understood, the directing is academic and flat, and repeatdly states the same thing through unusefully long shots, the plot is completely manichean, there isn't any sense of psychology nor any depth to the characters, and it's overly melodramatic. I can't understand the fascination for this stuff. It's not overly bad, but it lacks any distinctive quality.

I think it tells a compelling story with an identifiable with character which is what a lot of people's main focus is in seeing movies, and I thought the ending stands out, it's pretty beautiful. Those are it's main strong points, so it's works really well as a populist kind of movie, and I can respect it cause I think it did those couple things well. Since the ending managed to move me I give it a lot of leeway. Artistically it's not otherwise interesting, that is true so I usually call it decent.
Yeah, well, you know, that's just like, your opinion man

I have trouble getting emotional when there are huge red flashing letters telling me I should be crying and a voice-over telling me the same.
I'm not sure how it is compeling, it's entirely predictable and manichean. Who am I suppose to identify to ? The main character is completely perfect and shows very little emotion. Morgan Freeman's character ? It's a bit better but still unidimensional.

Not a bad movie by any standards. Took a while to capture my interest.

I made a post about this movie a while back. It really deserves more than whatever original rating I gave it. There are people you meet in life very briefly who can really make living more enjoyable. The movie is beautiful.
I think in our modern age technology has evolved to become more addictive. The things that don't give us pleasure aren't used as much. Work was never meant to be fun, but doing it makes us happier in the long run.

Saw a cute little cartoon called the Secret World of Arrietty and enjoyed it thoroughly (saw the version with British voice acting).
The pretty things are going to hell, they wore it out but they wore it well
