Awesome first episode, im so excited for next week ! I don't really know why he was expected to send ravens. He was no where near them when he was surrounded at the end of last season, and as far as we know he did not meet up with any of the other night's watch until he ran into Mormont. No idea why the white walkers let him live when they had him surrounded, but then a lone wight tries to kill Sam at the start of this season. I understand cutting the battle for budget reasons, but having Sam surrounded and the White Walker look directly at him and then inexplicably live was pretty poor writing. They could have at least made it seem like Sam successfully hid or something. I thought the Walkers led him live to tell 'they are back'. I'm now under the impression, after this episode, that in the scene its the first time he caught up with the rangers, meaning he just run in fear and didnt went back directly to the camp and send the ravens, which was his job at the wall, wasnt it?
He is a steward. There's no other reason to take a steward with you on a patrol other than to take care of the ravens and send mess messages. Normally only rangers would go.

Is there a way to watch this without paying a monthly HBO/netflix subscription fee but a per-episode fee like amazon instant video? I would pay the monthly fee if I were going to watch other videos they provide but I'm only going to be watching this series. You can pay for it, or you can get it illegally. Everyone who has seen it has done one of the two. I don't really endorse the second option, so I would suggest giving the first choice another look. The series really is awesome, but paying a monthly fee to see it does suck...
Do what i do, pirate the shit out of it the moment its uploaded every week.
... ... ...
And then buy the season box-set when its released to support them :-D
That way you dont have to wait, and your still paying for it, without a monthly fee that comes with garbage you dont want.
I feel thats ethical enough.
Also, HOLY SHIT BALLS I HAD NO IDEA THIS WAS FUCKING RUNNING AGAIN, DAAYUM, Cya, off to watch.

It should have been Sam's only job, but they also sent him out to collect shit for them to burn in the fire, meaning he was no where near the ravens when he was surrounded. So how was he supposed to run thru all the wights and White Walkers surrounding him and get back to the camp and send the ravens before it was over run?
It also doesn't make much sense that the White Walkers would let him live to tell them "they are back" when the Night's Watch was already able to see the white walkers at camp which is why they blew the horn 3 times before Sam even saw them.

I wonder if it was that expensive to film some scenes of the Night's watch fighting the white walkers, it was really anticlimatic to complete skip it. The end of season 2 was like holy shit look at that army of dead motherfuckers and then they're completly gone and all we see is Sam running into a dead body and a zombi.
Not even going to coment on Sam being surrounded by the army and then getting away like nothing lol

There was a fight? I was under the impression Sam was caught in the walkers' way, they for some reason ignored him and just kept on marching, the other rangers managing to stay clear of the walkers.

Bigger fish than Sam?

My friends asked the same question that hadn't read the books. From what I remember of the season 2 finale with that scene, is it looked like some tricky camera work where it looked like they were facing each other and really close, but Sam was concealed behind a snowdrift and while the king of the white walkers may have looked there I don't know if he truly saw Sam. Every other encounter with the walkers in the TV series has been very aggressive so I don't believe had an entire army + the king known he was in such close proximity, that they'd just leave him. Maybe we'll find out in future episodes if/when he tells the night's watch what happened.
[e] I'll watch it again when I get back or if someone wants to and post as well, and maybe I'm just mis-remembering things as well.

Yea I think it was just a little confusing camera work in the season 2 finale. I don't Sam was ever face to face with the walker on the horse, they just edited it badly so it looked like they were.
For what its worth, I don't think they showed the battle in the book either, so I think they may just be trying to stay faithful to the book. Either way, its not too big of a deal as it probably just means they used more of their budget for other scenes in the rest of the season.

I wonder what stops Daenarys to recruit 8000 soldiers and pillage Astapor with help of dragons? After that slowly capturing Free cities one of the time.
If I would be any of the major houses from Westeros I would start negoating with Daenarys any alliances incase of another Targaryan conquest campaign.Secretly of course.

I think they cut out fighting scenes with the White Walkers in order to preserve the effect of that scenario and keep the season introduction relatively tame so that shit can get real crazy down the line.. You can guarantee that there will be at least one episode this season full to the brim with White Walker battles.

I might get a lot of hate for this, but im gonna say it outright: Stannis Baratheon is the biggest douche in westeros (not counting joffrey). The way he treated Davos in this episode was despicable. He insists on calling himself king, yet he refuses to take responsibility for his actions. Blaming Davos for Blackwater was pathetic, it was stannis decision to leave mellisandrae in dragonstone. Sure, Davos suggested it but as a King you have to stand by your decisions, a king does not blame somebody or talknghim into something like that. Davos told himthat if he brought mellisandrae to kings landing, people would say that he took the throne thanks to her magic, and that was true and then STANNIS decided to leave her up. Man up and take responsibility for your actions for gods sake.
Stannis is such a self absorbed oaf, he thinks the world owes him everything but he cant even stand for his own actions. Its like his whine about holding storms end. He defended a giant fortified keep against the Tyrells who did not even attempt to fight them, they waited for them to starve and if it wasn't for Davos they would have died of starvation. He im sure it sucks to have to eat your dogs, but he makes it sound like he made the greatest thing ever by basically doing nothing inside a fortress while waiting for someone to smuggle in food. Robert and Ned fought the real battles and won the war so that the siege could be lifted, but he never gives them credit for that. Ned gave up his life for stannis claim to the throne when he could have given it to renly or himself and end prevent all this war, and Stannis shows no gratitude and wants to kill Ned Starks son for calling himself "the king in the north" without even attempting to negotiate for some kind of alliance.

I forgot to mention the fact that before he blamed Davos, he blamed mellisandrae and attempted to choke her, an unarmed woman. Not very kingly

The dragons are getting bigger and kinda scary, but they're certainly not there yet. I doubt they would survive a hundred people throwing spears at them at this point (even if they'd manage to fry some guys).

I'm pretty sure the whole point of the character is that he is a decent man being turned into a giant asshole by the red witch, right?

Not very kingly On the other hand she is more dangerous and powerful than most men in the story (like how she killed Renly), so even though chivalry would be strong in a middle ages-esque society, we know better than to expect it in such a situation.

Why? Dragons have been dead for ages so that's probably a rumor and god knows I can't imagine too many major houses care for the goings on over yonder. All three armies over in Westeros are still enough to destroy a small 8000 man force, however good they are. Plus this is their home. They'll have advantages in the terrain and logistics routes.
Dany really isn't a concern.

The fade to black with the sounds of fighting and yelling was supposed to take the place of the battle happening on screen.

Personally i thought the blood on the head of whoever the leader was (sorry forgot his name!) was a sign that they had fought the walkers atleast in some manner.
