The german game of thrones version is really horrible though, they actually translated Jon Snow with "Jon Schnee", which does sound really stupid and reminds me of blizzards wow translations. Directly translating names is a really bad idea and completely unnecessary.

One interesting exception is the tv-series scrubs, imo the german version is way better than the original. While watching it on english it really sounds kinda stupid and flat, and the serious parts of the show actually don't seem to be very serious at all.

I also don't like subs very much because they draw way too much attention of the actual movie, but that may be just because i'm not accustomed to it.

About Jon Schnee etc...well they did the same crap in the new version of the books which are still airing - so it wasn't rly surprising for me - still horrible though.

oT: Scrubs has pretty good dubs(one of the best I know), but the original version is better imo.

Jon Schnee? Really? Omg. This is no longer my mother tongue. Listening to such crap probably gives you cancer. Dubbing it in German is almost always a very bad Idea. That said, when a dub exceeds its original the result is awesome. However, that only happens in very rare cases.
I hope I never have to see the German version of this. (I probably will but one can hope)

What is wrong with "Jon Schnee"? The bastard names in Westeros are based on regional features such as Snow in the North, Storm in the Stormlands or Waters in King's Landing (since it's a seaport). What all those names have in common is that they're just normal English words, so it makes sense to translate those.

Yeah same was in the french version of Lord of the Rings...

and many stuff... it was very disturbing

Translating the books (and the show) really is a "Damned if you do, damned if you don't" situation. The original translation of the books did not translate the names of people and places, and it ended up being a weird mix of English and German because the books have a million names/places/rivers/historical figures. The new translation translates most names/places and ends up being, well, German. And that's weird, too. There's really no way to fix this, one way or the other.

So the best option is still to just read/watch the original.

How is "Schnee" not your mother tongue? I dont get your issues.
Of course this bastard surname has to be translated. There is no way a person living in (German speaking) Westeros could understand what "Snow" means. Because there is no English or German in Westeros, just the common tongue. And if this common tongue happens to be what we know as German, than the surname has to be Schnee.

Indeed. You also avoid the possibility of things getting "lost in translation".

I am completely aware of that. However, I think dubbing is almost always the wrong choice. Subtle messages and jokes are often destroyed. I enjoy content in its original Form. That goes as much for Japanese anime shows as for the Swedish version of "the girl with the dragon tattoo". I think getting everything served leads to you living in a bubble of our own language. For me language is just part of the work that gets presented to me. "Jon Schnee" just sounds all wrong. I think Martins work in particular is a case where you do more damage than good with a translation. Translating something that deals with daily life or a kids show? Okay. Translating more sophisticated or abstract works or great classics like Shakespeare? Or Goethe? Rather not. Besides I really want to bridge the cultural gap a little and language is the door I think works best. "Jon Schnee" just slams that door in your face.

Well in the spanish versions of the book it is Jon Nieve, and it didn't sound too awkward to me. Maybe it was because in spain there is quite a lot of people with surnames such as Nieves or Rios. I'd say they did a good job with the translations, since most of the made up words remain in their original form (they didn't translate Lannister or Stark to some other random bullshit), and most of the normal word names have been successfully translated, like Dragonstone to Rocadragón.

I am still in shivering from the LotR translation, from Bilbo Baggings to Bilbo Bolsón (or 'Saquet' in catalan, which is even more ridiculous). And this is why you should read the original version whenever possible, to avoid these kind of stupidities.

There is no way german speaking Westeros parents would call their son Jon, be consistent and call him Johannes Schnee.

German version of GoT is an abomination, end of story.

John ist eine niederdeutsche, friesische und englische Kurzform von Johann bzw. Johannes. Die niederdeutsche und englische Aussprache des Namens unterscheiden sich wesentlich.

Recently ranked at #75.

John Schnee is not the problem. Jaslyn Amwasser is.

In a few cases, you can't make a good translation out of it. There is no equivalent for landing in a town's name in German for instance.

In general the German translation is decent. You always meet dilemmas. Just be glad, that the Starks are not called Karg.

we discuss the German dubbing of the show, not the books

things like Lannister -> Lennister or Bywater -> Amwasser is just terrible. I also dont understand why they changed Kings Landing to Königmund (Königsmund = kings mouth), its not only bad it also makes no sense.

Jesus the last 3 pages of this thread have devolved to pointless off-topic discussion with random spoilers throughout.

Saw the sneak preview the other day, really wasn't much new in it except for some actor interviews, but overall it was worth the watch imo. Can't wait until this weekend, currently watching an episode a day of S1 to get hyped up and completely ready for the premier!
