Macbeth uses this kind of election to bypass the King's sons. The Norman invasion in 1066 was a case where the loser of the election (William) invaded to press his claim to have been designated by the king as heir. (And effectively ended the election system due to being a sore loser) It's a pretty well known system used by quite a few cultures including several used as sources for the Iron Islanders. I assume that there are basically 3 candidates eligible by the system, only 2 of whom are currently known about. Incidentally, if Theon doesn't get the nod, the elective system means he's SOL because the election happened and he lost and "I forgot to run" isn't a great excuse.

That's in Theon's mind, but when he declared himself as such to Balon he basically got spit on. I rewatched the scene just now and Balon doesn't actually call Yara his heir either, he calls her the commander of the Iron Fleet. So I guess Balon never got around to actually declaring an heir. If the Iron Islanders knew Theon was alive I wonder if they would have seen him as the default choice or if the election would still go through? Scene for reference: + Show Spoiler +

His penis is cut off, so he can't produce new offspring, he looks scruffy as fuck and he has fingers (and toes?) missing. I don't think the badass people from Pyke are going to take him seriously seeing such a pathetic person. On the other side, maybe they have massive respect for him being an ex-war prisoner of Ramsey Bolton and being alive to tell the tale.

I feel like Ramsey isnt exactly well known on the Isles.

Breaking Theon kind of made sense to find out if Bran and Rickon were alive but cutting his dick off made him useless as a bargaining chip with the Iron Islands. Same deal with Sansa. Why the fuck did he torture her? If he was hospitable then she'd still be in Winterfell as his wife and Ramsay's claim on the North would be unmatched. Ramsay is a classic retarded evil archetype that does shit for the sole purpose of being evil. Had he been more pragmatic he would have not one, but TWO kingdoms in his pocket. Or at the very least he could prevent the Ironborn from attacking the coast and his vassals from rebelling.

Or at the very least he could prevent the Ironborn from attacking the coast and his vassals from rebelling. Ramsay is smart but can't adapt to changing conditions. Look at his position in Seasons 2/3. He's very good at breaking people - turned Theon from an arrogant prince who's trying to impress his family to a groveling slave who doesn't even want to think about the people he left behind. He did this through a calculated combination of flaying, false hopes, and other mind tricks designed to break him. Look how long it took for him to even think of rebelling in Season 5. He even attacked his own sister when she came to rescue him. When he was an unknown (to the audience and to the rest of Westeros), his tactic of falsely offering surrender was perfect because nobody expected to be flayed as they left the confines of the castle. When he was a nobody (Bolton's bastard), he didn't have much reputation to lose. The torture (of Theon and Sansa) is the same way. Why do people fear the Boltons and the Dreadfort? Because they have a tradition of doing funny things to people. Ramsay is the newest member of this tradition. Now here's where things get dicey for Ramsay - he is in a much more precarious position. Roose hasn't taught him all the ins and outs of how to rule. He did offer a few pointers (stop doing the false surrender thing or nobody will surrender to you anymore), but he's also happy being uncontested, and wouldn't like Ramsay overshadowing his rule... yet. Maybe Ramsay knows this, and that's why he realizes he has to kill his father before his father kills him (and Roose would surely kill Ramsay... remember the story about how Roose almost left him to die as a baby?) but otherwise, his old tactics have worked so far, and he sees no need to change them. In fact, other than Roose's warnings, things are going well for Ramsay. Sansa and Reek may have escaped, but he still rules Winterfell. He defeated the army that came to take it. He probably has more men in the garrison if anyone else comes knocking soon. The new Lord Karstark seems pretty happy to be Ramsay's bannerman. And that's where his downfall is going to be - he's not going to have any advisors, or any good ones. Who the hell is going to say no to Ramsay fucking Bolton? Karstark saw firsthand what happened to his dad. If he has any doubts, he's probably smart enough to hold them in his head if Ramsay's in the room.. So probably, Ramsay's situation is going to collapse soon.

Ramsay is just a mad guy with bastard syndrom, the only question will he die in a suffer close to a midseason, or till the last episode. It's like killing Joffrey and Governor in a single person.
