There is no way someone as hated as he is, could walk around with impunity if he wasn't a great fighter, royal or not. You honestly think the reason he is alive is becuase he is a skilled combatant?
It's not THE reason but if he wasn't he would of been ''robbed" or something as soon as he came to EDIT: Kings Landing

He is not from the east, he is from Westeros. Dorne is to the south of Westeros, but still part of it.

Face it people like Obreyn and have given their reasons for why and where on the baller scale they place him. With regards to things only shown in the show.
By your logic we could plug holes in why every character is liked or disliked etc.

What's so great about Valyrian steel? I feel like the show hasn't made good examples of why its so good. The only thing I know about it is that its super rare.

I didnt say there was no reason to like Obreyn now did i? I said there was no reason to be hyping him as the most baller fighter in westeros/dorne which people are doing
EDIT: some people

Those two new swords were made from Ned Stark's Valyrian Steel blade. I don't recall how much was mentioned about it in the show so I'm afraid to say anything but it's explained pretty well in the first book where it comes from, why it's so rare, how it's made etc. You can google it if you want; it's not really spoiling anything.

The backstory of Valerian is never told in the show, but they do mention a couple of things. The swords are made out of a rare material called Valerian Steel (shocker, I know). The material is finite, which is why there are only a few of them. Making swords out of the material is apparently very difficult and only very few blacksmiths are able to do it. One obviously lives in Kings landing, who helped reforge Ned's sword.
Swords made out of Valerian steel is very light, and they never break or chip. And I think thats all we know about it unless you start googling it or read the books.

Thanks chaps

Raneth I didnt say that you said "I didnt say there was no reason to like Obreyn now did i?", I just said people like him and are giving their reasons why they like him and think he is a baller.
Alas we can move on from the arguement, with regards to Valryian steel I think of how the Samurai craft their blades and then imagine that metal is made of mithril. Or just imagine its a first era elven crafted blade from the lord of the rings ^^.

You can basically think of them as the Damascus Steel of the Game of Thrones universe.

Tywin said in the episode that he had to pay the guy with the skill to work it to cross the ocean from the free cities, nobody in Westeros had that skill and only two people in Essos.

Yeah it's not their nobleness that keeps them safe. You didn't see them clearing the peasants during the riot in Kings Landing with their 'nobility'...?
Lannisters barely even walk around the Red Keep without armed guards. Anyone who matters, even many of the ones that can fight, don't go far without other armed men. The freedom with which Oberyn walks around alone, what is essentially hostile territory, and his relaxed demeanor is indicative that he doesn't think anyone poses any threat to him in combat.
'Rob'= assassinate but attempt to make it look like a common robbery.

'Rob'= assassinate but attempt to make it look like a common robbery. It's not even close to 'hostile territory', and the guy still showed up with quite a few guards. Yes, they showed up later (though almost certainly shared the road with him). No, he's not hanging out in the dangerous areas of the city. And Lannisters barely walk around without armed guards because they have a ton of armed guards to walk around with, seeing as it's practically their keep/city.
The guy is cool and obviously capable but lets be reasonable here.
