Terrible episode.
I haven't been a huge fan of this season so far but this episode is just ridiculous.
Don't pretend to go dark for a single episode just to steer it away with some bullshit "forgive yourself" message.
A clear example what happens when a writer wants to be edgy but doesn't have the balls to actually take the characters anywhere. A single episode in wich dexter goes near serial killer and then bounces back to superhero dexter?
And for what? He didn't kill Jonah cause he bashed in his abusive mother? Ooh im sorry Dex i didn't know you gave a pass on that but ofcourse a weed grower needs to get a pitchfork in the gut.
Look into the light of your heart, forgive yourself and embrace your lord and savior Jesus Christ.
Without light there is no darkness!!! This is some Japanese anime level philosophy.

The episode opened up great and the idea was good. The late half was to much cramped into too little time. Should had made it a double episode.

I don't see how the professor can still be assumed to be imaginary - didn't the woman that they had previously held hostage tip Deb off to the fact that she heard TWO people conversing?

Without light there is no darkness!!! This is some Japanese anime level philosophy. Part of me agrees with this, the other part loved it since it is, as always with Dexter, amazingly shot and nicely done. Over all I think this is the problem with the show, the idea of the show is aaaaaawesome, the characters are awesome and the production is awesome. But they never evolve, Dexter is basicly the same thing he was in season 1. I love the show though.

I was just about to edit my post to include that point, however, I don't think that would of been the case...

I just rewatched the scene to be sure. She never explicitly says something like this, she kind of dodges all the questions in a convenient manner.
Girl: One of them kept calling the other "professor", but I didn't see either of them...
Batista: There were two of them?
Girl: The younger guy is the one who let me go. I sorta could tell that he was the weaker of the two. The younger guy said he kept calling me...the whore.
So it appears she never actually heard Gellar say anything, only hearsay from Travis that Gellar is referring to her as "the whore". It's kind of weird that she never directly answered Batista's question too. This would lead one to believe that she heard Travis talking to "the professor" but never heard the professor say anything back.

I probably wasn't paying close enough attention during that scene; thanks for the clarification

I don't want to think I have confirmation bias, but I really want Gellar to turn out to be imaginary. By bringing Brian back in they posed the idea that an imaginary person actually can "do" things like with the pitchfork. They've kept it vague enough to let the professor being imaginary still possible, so I hope that's the direction i actually takes. I'd be so disappointed at this point if he turns out to be alive.
(btw, did anyone else catch the reference to that painting http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_Gothic after Dexter killed the motel owner?)

Oh yeah, I want to add one more thing that lends credence to the theory.
How many times, in all of these episodes, have you ever heard Travis refer to Gellar as "professor"?
Zero I think, and yet this girl heard it multiple times in a short window. This could mean that the conversations he has with Gellar out loud are different than the way they play out in his mind (which is what we see on the TV screen). Thus, what appears to us to be a calm exchange between two relative partners is, in reality, Travis ranting crazily to his imaginary dead professor.

The woman say something like one person held her in with a knee to her back and another fed her some liquid. I guess it's possible for 1 person to simulate that and she's pretty disoriented but still its pretty hard to mistaken 2 ppl manhandling her as opposed to 1.
I'm pretty sick of the whole imaginary or not plot twist. I don't even give a fuck whether the prof is real or not anymore. Pretty sure its just the writers trolling. It doesn't really add alot to the story overall unlike fight club

I'm still on the "Gellar is Travis' dark passenger in his head" boat. It's going to lead to the point where dexter finds out and will have to make a choice in killing the 'light' Travis just to rid the world of the 'dark' Gellar.

Lmao, preach it brother. Always good to hear I'm not the only one who finds anime pathetic.

One episode dealing with Dexter's moral compass? Really? Could have been so much better if they spread that out at least. Especially since Brian is a great character. Hell, they could have made a whole season about a Trinity copy cat that would have proved interesting.
Also, it's pretty evident that Gellar is imaginary now. The only evidence I heard to the contrary was that he opened up a trunk or passed Travis stuff. Brian was throwing bags into the ocean and stabbing people, so pretty sure as long as nobody talks to Gellar, it's a pretty safe bet that we have some Fight Club shit going on.

This season has been a pretty big let-down
Season 5 ended horribly and now they're just...There is no reason to watch every episode you know. The killers are out and about and you know who they are and what they're doing from the moment the season starts. If you skipped from episode 1 to the newest one you wouldn't have missed anything.
I LOVED how in season 1 you had no idea who the killer was and what his plan was or anything like that. And dexter had real goals and decisions and wasn't just wondering about the same crap all the time. Season 4 had that going on to, you kepted getting surprised by what was going to happen and you had to tune into the show week after week because you could miss a ton of information if you didnt.

What? The whole season so far has been about "some bullshit 'forgive yourself' message."
I think this episode was mainly to point out that Dexter is just as crazy if not more crazy than Travis... I mean look at the stuff Dexter did under the influence of Brian...
I mean if Dexter can find the light, Travis should in theory be able to aswell. Which is why I think Dexter is going to try to kill Travis' dark passenger. Personally I thought that was obvious from the next week preview.
|
Any interaction by Gellar could be explained with the "Brian and the Pitchfork" scene, simply that it's just Travis doing it. They're making it painfully obvious that he isn't real. I don't know if it's on purpose, or if the end of season "twist" will be that he is real.
|
That episode started off brilliantly, seeing Dexter and his brother back together. Seeing Dexter start to crumble, and Brian (His dark passenger) start to take over control. But all it took was 5 minutes and a murdered who was literally asking to be killed and Dexter was back to being a good guy.
I really think they need to embrace Dexter's darkness, and I can't believe they did not stretch this Brian thing out over a few episodes. He is such a great character.

Dexter is gonna teach Travis the code!

I could not agree any more.
The episode was perfectly horrid. Stealing a gun from a gas station that certainly has his license plate after boning the teenage employee?
He left more loose ends than in the first 3 seasons.
Also, the depiction of his brother as a reckless, impulsive murderer doesn't fit the original one at all. The Icetruck killer was much more deliberate, calm and calculated.
