In the day that God created man, in the likeness of God made He him. 2 Male and female created He them, and blessed them and called their name Adam in the day when they were created. 3 And Adam lived a hundred and thirty years, and begot a son in his own likeness, after his image, and called his name Seth. 4 And the days of Adam after he had begotten Seth were eight hundred years; and he begot sons and daughters. 5 And all the days that Adam lived were nine hundred and thirty years; and he died. 6 And Seth lived a hundred and five years, and begot Enosh. 7 And Seth lived after he begot Enosh eight hundred and seven years, and begot sons and daughters. 8 And all the days of Seth were nine hundred and twelve years; and he died. 9 And Enosh lived ninety years, and begot Cainan. 10 And Enosh lived after he begot Cainan eight hundred and fifteen years, and begot sons and daughters. 11 And all the days of Enosh were nine hundred and five years; and he died. 12 And Cainan lived seventy years, and begot Mahalaleel. 13 And Cainan lived after he begot Mahalaleel eight hundred and forty years, and begot sons and daughters. 14 And all the days of Cainan were nine hundred and ten years; and he died. 15 And Mahalaleel lived sixty and five years, and begot Jared. 16 And Mahalaleel lived after he begot Jared eight hundred and thirty years, and begot sons and daughters. 17 And all the days of Mahalaleel were eight hundred ninety and five years; and he died. 18 And Jared lived a hundred sixty and two years, and he begot Enoch. 19 And Jared lived after he begot Enoch eight hundred years, and begot sons and daughters. 20 And all the days of Jared were nine hundred sixty and two years; and he died. 21 And Enoch lived sixty and five years, and begot Methuselah. 22 And Enoch walked with God after he begot Methuselah three hundred years, and begot sons and daughters. 23 And all the days of Enoch were three hundred sixty and five years. 24 And Enoch walked with God; and he was not, for God took him. 25 And Methuselah lived a hundred eighty and seven years, and begot Lamech. 26 And Methuselah lived after he begot Lamech seven hundred eighty and two years, and begot sons and daughters. 27 And all the days of Methuselah were nine hundred sixty and nine years; and he died. 28 And Lamech lived a hundred eighty and two years, and begot a son. 29 And he called his name Noah, saying, “This same shall comfort us concerning our work and toil of our hands, because of the ground which the Lord hath cursed.” 30 And Lamech lived after he begot Noah five hundred ninety and five years, and begot sons and daughters. 31 And all the days of Lamech were seven hundred seventy and seven years; and he died. 32 And Noah was five hundred years old; and Noah begot Shem, Ham, and Japheth. Yes. Very inspiring.

You're just not thinking about it in the right way. You want to be "entertained" :p It's like saying you think the Iliad would be better without the catalogue of ships. (edit: Seriously. One of my favorite bits in Genesis is in this passage!)

I think it's the wrong way to approach the book of Genesis, certainly. On the other hand, Genesis is incredibly entertaining. I certainly feel that posting a list of "begats" as a reason for not liking Genesis is very silly! Wait, before we keep arguing about this, have you read Genesis? Just sat down and read it from beginning to end? It's got, like, a bunch of sex and violence and things like that in it. Great stuff. To some extent, something like Tolkien can never live up to something like Genesis because Tolkien's writing is the product of a single mind working at a single time and place, while Genesis is the product of a whole culture over vast lengths of time. Tolkien's artifice (and his genius) is to create some of the impression of ancient literature, but Genesis is the real thing. You've got layers of Babylonian mythology buried under layers of Yahwist dissidents with various "jewish" editors trying to fix things up and keep it neat.. fascinating. And such moments of sheer enigmatic beauty

Lot and his Daughters 30And Lot went up out of Zoar, and dwelt in the mountain, and his two daughters with him; for he feared to dwell in Zoar: and he dwelt in a cave, he and his two daughters. 31And the firstborn said unto the younger, Our father is old, and there is not a man in the earth to come in unto us after the manner of all the earth: 32Come, let us make our father drink wine, and we will lie with him, that we may preserve seed of our father. 33And they made their father drink wine that night: and the firstborn went in, and lay with her father; and he perceived not when she lay down, nor when she arose. 34And it came to pass on the morrow, that the firstborn said unto the younger, Behold, I lay yesternight with my father: let us make him drink wine this night also; and go thou in, and lie with him, that we may preserve seed of our father. 35And they made their father drink wine that night also: and the younger arose, and lay with him; and he perceived not when she lay down, nor when she arose. 36Thus were both the daughters of Lot with child by their father. 37And the firstborn bare a son, and called his name Moab: the same is the father of the Moabites unto this day. 38And the younger, she also bare a son, and called his name Benammi: the same is the father of the children of Ammon unto this day.

They aren't there for you to "care" for them :p Yes they are. I think it's the wrong way to approach the book of Genesis, certainly. On the other hand, Genesis is incredibly entertaining. I certainly feel that posting a list of "begats" as a reason for not liking Genesis is very silly! Not really. Genesis was pretty boring TBH, just like most of the Bible. Wait, before we keep arguing about this, have you read Genesis? Just sat down and read it from beginning to end? It's got, like, a bunch of sex and violence and things like that in it. Great stuff. Yes I've read the whole thing. Also appealing to "sex and violence" is a terrible argument, you're basically trying to appease the kinds of people who wouldn't even be here reading this. To some extent, something like Tolkien can never live up to something like Genesis because Tolkien's writing is the product of a single mind working at a single time and place, while Genesis is the product of a whole culture over vast lengths of time. That's why Tolkien is better. You get a coherent world and narrative instead of a jumbled mishmash of random fragments from some random ancient culture. Tolkien's artifice (and his genius) is to create some of the impression of ancient literature, but Genesis is the real thing. Life imitates art far more than art imitates life. The facsimile of the thing is often better than the thing itself. You've got layers of Babylonian mythology buried under layers of Yahwist dissidents with various "jewish" editors trying to fix things up and keep it neat.. fascinating. Eh. Don't really care other than from an academic level. It's fascinating to unearth and unravel how it came to be, but as literature itself it is inherently inferior due to its very nature. And such moments of sheer enigmatic beauty I derive no aesthetic pleasure from it.

![]() Anyway, the world is not coherent, it is internally contradictory, so of course an internally contradictory text is better at representing the world than a coherent one :D Your poetics is very strange to me! "Also appealing to "sex and violence" is a terrible argument, you're basically trying to appease the kinds of people who wouldn't even be here reading this" I'm appealing to *me*! Those are the bits that *I* like!
