I guess this was supposed to be an homage to Gundam and Godzilla, but it looks more like a terrible Battleship/Transformers mashup. At least it has Guillermo del Toro and pretty explosions. Although as expected for this genre, many of the explosions make no sense whatsoever, like the fighter jet blowing up at 0:41.

This movie's critical success will probably depend on whether the monsters and metal giants upstage the human characters. I'm spying a hint of Heroic White Dude and Exotic Flavor syndrome in the trailer though.

Is that really Glados? The voice is exactly the same... did they buy the rights for that character from Valve? It can't be a coincidence.
Del toro is very good, and just having his name attached to this project bodes well. Remember Hellboy movies? Pan's Labyrinth? I think he was attached to direct Hobbit too at one point.

Hollywood mecha movie fuck yeah.
Not expecting much but maybe shameless entertainment for one watch through.

That's just my first impression. I disagree completely. What I just saw was my dreams as a child projected onto the screen. I don't give two shits about the story - robots fighting giant monsters in modern day is WAY under played at the moment, and only done with shitty CGI. This looks great. I want to see a Robot punch a monster in the face. It's like the whole reason X-men 3 will live as legendary for me - It wasn't because it was actually good. It was because it had the juggernaut, and the phoenix, and no movie sucks if it has Patrick Stewart, regardless of how shitty it actually was. But yeah, i pick my nose. you should hate xmen3 because it was an insult to the story and those characters.
Fun fact: IT WAS A MOVIE.
It doesn't matter how good it was or how much it disgraced the characters because it's not like people who like the series will acknowledge it anyway - like Star Wars.

This looks so dumb. I'm a huge fan of Guillermo del Toro, so I'll try to keep an open mind, but god, this does not look good.
I seriously hope I'll end up wrong, because I want to be, but ugh.

big robots fighting godzilla like creatures, how exciting.

What the hell is Glados? What the hell is evangelion?
Don't get me wrong, super excited about giant robots vs giant alien monsters in 3D, but I don't get any of the references in this thread.

huh?
the monster takes a swipe at the jet

Holy shit it's Evangelion.

This will either be awesome or completely corny and suck like transformers 2 did.
I kinda wish they'd just said "fuck it" and done Gundam vs monsters, but this is fine =)
"gypsy danger" LOL well played glados

This has captured the monsters very well, Godzilla, memories. However the giant robots does not remind me of anything Japanese (other than Godzilla) simply because of one thing:
the lack of proper intimidation and 'sleek' design - also the rocket punch is facepalm worthy, plz hollywood, go watch the King of Braves, GaoGaiGar.
Let me explain it in a way that will express my facepalm, cuz its important to me.
EVAs (short for, synthetic fighting humanoid evangelion, the topic of much mention of late), for example, has a freaky face. once the armour is removed it is simply a greyish blob with two eyes and flesh underneath. This giant robot here, simply looks like a bigger version of master chief, as usual (master chief, of course is based on a grunt robot from the Mobile Suit Gundam series). I can care less if it has flesh underneath, it is too american (which means its design is epic fail in a legit giant robot stand point) Now i do believe the reason why people think this is like EVA is simply because of the motion commands the 'pilots' or 'drivers' have to use. Hence everything i said about looks is pointless and people are just going to TL:DR this. BUT IT IS IMPORTANT TO ME. What is more important to me is that Evangelion was NOT the only show to have motion commands. As a matter of fact, EVANGELION PILOTS DO NOT CONTROL THE GIANT ROBOTS BY MOTION! EVA pilots control the giant flesh bots by thought and finger commands are shown to be done with joy sticks. Also, EVA explained in their show; with visual demonstration, that the giant flesh bots are relatively entirely needed, by dropping a nuke and still not being able to destroy a giant monster. Angels from Evangelion also look more pokemon than Godzilla.
HENCE! This giant robot movie, for me, reminds me the hell of WARHAMMER 40K instead of EVA.
now those who thinks this looks like EVA, explain yourselves.

Jets don't fly under giant monster wings to be swiped at. Fighter jets barely even shoot these days, they take orders from the mushroom plane nearby and fire missiles. Jet fighters are designed for support, not for direct confrontation.

This reminds me of The Big O more than anything. Especially the styles of the robots and monsters. Creatures coming from the ocean theme is similar too. Hell I even remember flying rocket punches.
