Any swordfight ever in any movie. But I guess that as a fencer I look at this stuff differently.
Two people touching each others glow sticks, that isn't even a fight.
Anyway, you can objectively rank duels by measuring the average length of a camera shot. The more skilled the two people doing the duel, the less you have closeups of their hands, their feet, their backs, a moving sword.
The camera can just give a wide shot, showing the entire body of both for several times 10 seconds while the duel ends. In fact, no duel ever should need to cut to another shot before it ends.
Best duel? I don't know if I know any ones that are actually good off the top of my head.
I guess I liked the Jet Li vs Donnie Yen one from Ying Xiong. Two decently skilled guys, some cool angle about how they fight in their minds, which is made entertaining by showing on-camera fighting. The mind game is everything in a one on one duel to the death. You don't get to be a skilled duelist by just going gun-ho all out. You must be sure you are stronger before you go for the attack, and you must know for sure you can get the kill before you go for the kill.
Also, that fight has quite a few scenes where both bodies are shown for several seconds, making several moves. No need to hide their awkwardness or the fact there's body doubles by changing camera shots 5x a second.
Then, the real fight is just one attack, like most real fights would be. If you attack and fail, you are likely dead. Just look at high level olympic fencing of kendo. Now, I agree a movie fight is not the same as a real fight. But what is done should at least be done with which, which it rarely is, and it should at least resemble fighting.
Ofc,Donnie Yen will be in Rogue One. Have much more hope for those movies. Like how Guardians of the Galaxy was actually really good and Age of Ultron was completely unwatchable. Still, I doubt Donnie will be a Sith and he should be way past his prime anyway.

It was overly cringe-worthy. Here, fans have been waiting for 30 years to see luke again, lets make a 45seconds big 360 degrees shot on him so fans can get their nerdgasm. The way he was standing waiting there ready for Rey to show up and then turn to face her is so over the top.....
Rey could have walked up the hill, spot a figure in grey jedi robe, luke drops down his hood, (say one iconic/cool one liner, or not), gives a painful smile (that he is coming back to this whole mess again), a focus on his eye, cut. Now that would be cool, and way less fan service-y.

Its not even a good one... Its overloaded, way too long, way too over the top and it actually gets boring, to top it of it also ends in a really dumb way. Hell, the swordfight in "Die another day" is actually better (and the only somewhat good thing in that bondmovie :p)
First really cool swordfight that comes to my mind would be Crouching Tiger & Hidden Dragon, the 2 Girls going at it.
Btw: Fights don't have to be truely realistic, they should be entertaining AND(!!!) they should feel like they could end anytime/with any strike.

Remind me again what any of that has to do with his acting?

It just doesn't feel real. They are just making fancy moves that wouldn't be beneficial in a real fight. :D

Thought your post was referring to mine haha. Nope i didnt say a word about his acting. I dislike that last scene thats it

The new movie was great 9/10.
There are tons of nitpicking that one could do but only because every Star Wars movie will be compared to 30 years of Star Wars history.
JJ Abrams has done a great job and I look forward to the next movies (that unfortunately he isn't directing!).

But you missed the point, i was talking about his performance in the OT. His acting there was a reason i never liked Luke at all, he was terrible. The new cast is WAY better than he ever was in the OT.

The duel between Obi-Wan and Anakin in RotS is one of my favorites. Maybe because I'm not watching movies in 0.25 speed?
The only lightsaber battle I enjoyed in the OT was the last one. Luke leashing out, Vader throwing his lightsaber... it was energetic. The duel in Empire was ok, and the Obi-Wan vs. Vader rematch in ANH was pretty much the lamest thing in the entire SW universe. That including Jar-Jar and sand. And I don't like sand.
As for the other duels in the prequels aside from the Obi-Wan vs. Anakin, I have mixed feelings about them. Some of the jumping around scenes were indeed ridiculous, but on the other hand, we got to see an army of Jedi attacking at once! We got to see a Sidious vs. Yoda duel. Pure fanservice, even if in hindsight, we can complain how it could've been done better.
|
I don't think light saber duel needs actual technical sword skills to pull it off to be considered good (but then i know most of us get spoiled by the video games).
All lightsaber fights in prequels and OT serve as an important plot progression, the 'worst' duel in episode1-6 was obviously obiwan v Vader but that fight means alot to the story and us viewers (please put on your nostalgic glasses).
The 2 lightsaber fights (notice I actually use 'fight' instead of 'duel' now) are almost pointless in SW7. Fin's force awakening is barely there (I just assume that's half of point of him using lightsaber, the other half reason is to sell toys ie that storm tropper); and the final fight not only it doesn't look good at all (and that's because) these two are just noobs, the fight was forced to happen when there is barely any force in them. Ugly ugly fight. And lightsaber chopping tree and burnig the ground, just no.
|
Finally went to see SW7. I could nitpick like 100 things they could have done better, but that feels kinda pointless. Overall it was still a very good movie. The friend that was with me (30+, not a nerd, never seen Star Wars) loved the film.
Just one thing since I just saw it here, the light saber fights looked great. The fuck is the problem with a light saber chopping a tree lol.

Because I'm a giant nerd of lightsaber, it is the most powerful weapon in the universe man. It is sacred :'( will you chop pork steak with let's say...the legendary sword Excalibur

It's like she didn't get the memo, that we don't lunge with lightsabers because of reasons (God bless Sidious though); and we make dramatic stops in-between strikes to eye-fuck our opponent and to talk with them a little about the questions of life.
This is the ugliness Star Wars needed. Hopefully Luke goes the ugly way in ep VIII and instead of trying to pump Rey's head with the bullshit Yoda and the council tormented poor Anakin, he will give actual, valuable advices, which are not white and black. I can already hear the sighs from the audience when Luke says something along the lines that it's fine to let anger empower you, but you have to control it, otherwise it takes over you.
I doubt we will see any more fights like this, given how both Rey and Ren will be trained by episode VIII, so even if you didn't like it, it's unlikely to be repeated, and that's fine too.
I am pumped to see Rey wrecking shit with her double-sided lightsaber.

Nicely written and very good points. I doubt JJAbram have these in mind when he forced that final fight though. But ya, your explanation will make me bitch less on that lol

I'm willing to bet anything that Rey won't fight with an old-fashioned Lightsaber. I'M not saying never, Luke will obviously train her with that, but she will have something fancy, like the lightsaber staff or dual wielding lightsabers or something entirely new. I also doubt she will fight with a blue Lightsaber. I'm all aboard the yellow hype train, as it's both something new and it fits her appearance, but crafting a green saber in honor of her master, Luke could also be possible. Or maybe she'll dual wield Anakin's and Luke's lightsaber, which would be quite epic.

Just people wishing since Rey fights with a staff on Totally Not Tatooine so they hope she keeps with the staff idea by getting a double saber. The trouble with a double saber is that it's not a staff. The advantage of a staff over a sword is that you can grip it literally anywhere, and play with the distance between you and your opponent. As a consequence staff techniques are a lot more complex and a lot less straightforward than sword techniques, at least in my experience.
A twinblade Darth Maul-style looks fancy, but it's not very practical. Given a good sword instructor (surely Disney has the money to hire one), I'd love to see either Rey or Darth AngstyTeenager go for a dedicated dual-wield style. That's something the series hasn't done before, if I'm not wrong. By dedicated I mean that it's their main style, not something they do when they happen to get their hands on a second light sabre.
Also, who else would like to see Kylo Ren pulled back to the light side by his mother slapping him and telling him "you're coming home right the f*ck now, young man!"

I know you meant it as a joke, but if Carrie Fisher had not coked her brains out back then, Leia could've been made into a Jedi. She would be still prioritize being a general, but she could give a lesson or two to his babyboy. Luke and Leia lightsabering stormtroopers left and right while Rey just watches with her jaws dropped to the ground. Mmmm!
Of course, she would never go into any serious battle as a Jedi now, they would just say "that time is over", giving room for dozens of books to come out ,filling the gap between RotJ and TFA.

Whether it is practical or not, I really liked the look of the double-bladed light saber and so I would be totally on board with Rey making one for herself
That probably makes me a hypocrite given my early complaints about the light broadsword, but whatever, at the time I wasn't to sure I wanted a medieval aesthetic in Star Wars. That early nitpick has long ceased to be a concern of mine.
